Cranston (RI) Police arrest man on MA warrant stemming from road rage incident

"This morning (2/20/23), members of the Cranston Police and Franklin Police arrested a Cranston man on a warrant stemming from a road rage incident that occurred in Massachusetts on Friday where the suspect, Michael Sylvester, age 43, of 206 Dunedin Street allegedly fired multiple shots at a second vehicle and also struck a third. 

A search of Mr. Sylvester’s residence resulted in the seizure of four firearms, ammunition and several marijuana plants. He is now facing charges in RI and MA and extradition to MA as a Fugitive for multiple assault and firearm charges when he is arraigned in court tomorrow morning. 

Great job by all of the Officers and Detectives from both states who investigated and safely apprehended this armed suspect."

Free to a good home: Two Rhode Island lighthouses - The Boston Globe

"They have sweeping ocean views and historic significance, but after decades of service, the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown and Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly are no longer needed by the US Coast Guard.

The two lighthouses are being offered for free to qualifying public entities, the General Services Administration announced Thursday.

Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, those who can apply to own the lighthouses at no cost include government agencies, nonprofits, educational agencies or community development organizations, or groups dedicated to parks and recreation and cultural or historic preservation."

What is Rhode Island doing to re-open schools?

From the Boston Globe, an article of interest for Franklin: 

"What Governor Gina Raimondo announced Monday was effectively an extension of the biggest project affecting students and parents in Rhode Island: the reopening of schools. She said districts have until Oct. 13 to start in-person learning -- the day after Columbus Day.

But she made clear her plan is flexible. The districts that are ready to go can open with in-person learning on Sept. 14, but the more apprehensive superintendents – and there are plenty – have an extra month to gradually allow students to move from distance learning to in-person learning.

“We’re going to give this a try, and like everything we’ve done together over the past six months, if it doesn’t work, we’ll adjust,” Raimondo said during a press conference on Monday. “If we have problems, we’ll deal with it, but we owe it to our children to get them back into school.”

Raimondo has been clear for weeks that she believes schools should reopen to all students as soon as possible for two key reasons: 1. We don’t know this for sure, but it’s reasonable to assume that in-person learning is more effective than distance learning. 2. She wants Rhode Island’s economy to continue reopening, and that’s nearly impossible if parents have to stay home with their children all day."

In the News: Strange Brew planning to open brewery; Gaspee Days this weekend in RI

"For more than two decades, Brian Powers has been helping to teach people to brew beer at home. 

Now, the longtime owner of Strange Brew homebrew shop, plans on opening the Strange Brew brewery and taproom, and he hopes to educate consumers about the art or brewing. 

“I’ve been teaching people for 20-plus years and I still want to do that,” said Powers, 46, of Holden. “I’ll be running the taproom myself, I’ll be able to talk about the beers, the process, what went into it. I want to help people appreciate the beer.” 

The brewery and taproom will share space with the homebrew shop at its 416 Boston Post Road East location. The space, home of the former Laser Zone, is more than 16,000 square feet and has more than enough space for both businesses, Powers said."

"Rhode Islanders feel slighted that Bostonians get all the glory for helping spark the American Revolution with the Boston Tea Party. After all, more than a year before any tea was tossed, Rhode Island colonists burned a British ship. 

Saturday is the 246th anniversary of the day a local ship captain lured the British schooner HMS Gaspee into shallow waters a few miles south of Providence, where it ran aground. A smaller model of a ship will be burned Sunday to commemorate the forgotten act of rebellion. 

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse often recounts the story of how colonists waited till night fell, rowed out to the stranded Gaspee, shot the ship’s captain and burned the boat. It’s a cool story about an extraordinary act, said the Rhode Island Democrat. By comparison, he said, Massachusetts patriots mustered the courage to push tea off the deck of a British boat more than a year later. 

“It’s going to be a long, slow process to try to correct 240 years of the Massachusetts megaphone, but I think it is important to stick up for historic deeds that were done by Rhode Islanders,” said Whitehouse, who spoke about the Gaspee Affair Monday on the Senate floor."
