Franklin Letter Carriers and Local Residents Provide 8,300 Meals Through "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive

On Saturday, May 9, the Franklin Letter Carriers collected approximately 10,000 pounds of food and household essentials during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Despite the rain, residents across Franklin filled bags with donations, providing the equivalent of 8,300 meals to help the Franklin Food Pantry support neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The town-wide outpouring of support comes as the need for food assistance has reached an all-time high.

Over the past year, volunteers have played an important role in preparing for the drive. Franklin youth, civic groups, and local businesses, assembled instruction bundles and paper bags which were donated by Allegra Print and Marketing. Franklin Letter Carriers delivered the bundles to households throughout Franklin to help promote the food drive and encourage households to participate.

"While the Stamp Out Hunger food drive culminates in one incredible day of action, the work behind the scenes is a year-round commitment from Franklin Letter Carriers, volunteers, and supporters in our community," said Anne McGillis, Director of Operations at the Franklin Food Pantry. "The Pantry relies on Stamp Out Hunger donations to help sustain our community through the spring months. We are profoundly grateful to our letter carriers and community for their generosity and support."

For households who missed the drive but still wish to participate, The Pantry accepts donations at their 341 W Central St. location. Items can be placed in the purple bin on the loading dock at the back of the building. Supporters can shop and send donations directly through The Pantry’s Amazon Wish List, and monetary donations can be made on The Pantry’s website.

Stamp Out Hunger 2027 is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, 2027, rain or shine! For more information about volunteering or to learn more about upcoming community initiatives that help fight food insecurity, please visit www.franklinfoodpantry.org.

Franklin Food Pantry Celebrates Volunteers at Annual Appreciation Luncheon

In celebration of National Volunteer Month, the Franklin Food Pantry hosted its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 29, honoring the dedicated individuals who drive the organization’s mission. Amidst a year of record-breaking demand for food assistance, the event recognized the team of volunteers whose commitment ensures that The Pantry remains a steady resource for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

The luncheon featured motivational speaker and local author Ali Rheaume who offered a moving account of how Pantry volunteers’ support has made a difference in the Franklin community.

"Franklin Food Pantry volunteers do more than provide food—they provide dignity," said Ali. "Volunteering to clean isn't just maintenance; it’s creating a welcoming, safe space. Stocking shelves isn't just labor; it's providing nutrition. Opening the door isn't just a task; it's an invitation to connection. And a smile from a volunteer tells a shopper, 'You are seen.'"

Each week, more than 150 volunteers ensure The Pantry remains stocked, operating, and ready for clients. Their dedication makes it possible to offer essential programs including in-person and walk-in shopping, curbside distribution, mobile pantries at four Franklin locations, the Weekend Backpack Program, holiday meal distribution, the Community Garden Program, and more.

"Volunteers are the foundation of everything we do, and we are truly honored to recognize their important contributions at this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon,” said Tina Powderly, Executive Director of the Franklin Food Pantry. "Our volunteers create a supportive community that fosters genuine hope and belonging, and helps ensure that every neighbor who seeks food assistance is served with dignity and compassion. We are truly grateful for their hard work and commitment.”

The luncheon was made possible by G&C Plumbing and Heating which sponsored the event, New England Chapel which provided the space, Vicario Studio which provided photography, 495 Rental which provided the tables, and Starbucks on E Central Street, The Rome, Elizabeth’s Bagels, and Board members who provided food, beverages, and desserts. Special thanks to Franklin High School’s JV and Varsity Softball teams for setting up the luncheon, and to Franklin Fathers for breaking down and cleaning up.

NY Times: "The Trump Administration Has Changed Almost Every Aspect of Food Stamps"

"President Trump and his top officials have cast a sharp decrease in the number of food stamp recipients over the past year as evidence of economic progress and increasing self-sufficiency.

But the decline of more than three million participants since Mr. Trump took office to December 2025 is the result of some of the most consequential changes and the largest funding cut to the program since its inception.

Through legislation and regulatory tweaks over the past year, the administration and its allies in Congress have achieved a long-held conservative goal of shrinking the safety net, reshaping how the federal government defines need for low-income beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Among the alterations: who is eligible, who must work to receive benefits, how much beneficiaries will receive, what can be purchased, what grocery stores that accept SNAP must stock on shelves, how states and counties administer the program and how much localities are paid by the federal government."

Look for some Horace Mann mugs at the Empty Bowls silent auction

"The Franklin High School Empty Bowls Club and I are excited to launch our preparations for the 2026 event to support the Franklin Food Pantry in May. Reuniting with the team to share ideas and decide on silent auction items has been productive.

This year, we've decided to design and make mugs to commemorate Horace Mann's 230th birthday.

You can find these mugs at the 11th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser silent auction scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 6 PM at Franklin High School.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the event. "

"Good morning everyone!
My band Karate Show recently played a benefit show for the Franklin Food Pantry at the THE BLACK BOX. This was our first ever all acoustic show in 15 years as a band, so it’s a special one.
We’re hoping to raise a bit more money for the Pantry by sharing the recording. It’s available to download for whatever you’d like to contribute. A buck? $50 bucks? Anything. Every dollar will go directly to the Franklin Food Pantry. Come on, it's important.
Thank you to our fantastic sound engineer, @ Robert Swalley, for capturing the performance for us. We love working with you man. Also, huge thanks to Matthew Zajac. for the incredible mix. Always top-notch, my friend! Ray Auger and William James, thanks again for the invite.
Peace and love, peace and love..."
