Franklin Bellingham Rail Trail Cmte has Opportunities to Give Back

The Franklin & Bellingham Rail Trail Committee is seeking volunteers to join in its leadership roles. If you're passionate about the outdoors, making a difference in our community and connecting with others, we want to hear from you!

What's the Mission?
The Franklin & Bellingham Rail Trail Committee (FBRTC) is a volunteer advocacy group dedicated to the development, maintenance, and financial support of the Southern New England Rail Trail as a multi-use, universally accessible recreational path.

Here's what some of our volunteers say about being involved!
"The FBRTC has been an outlet for me--a chance to be in the community, doing meaningful things, with great people beside me. The committee's advocacy is a bright spot, and not just for me. I've had several people tell me how important it is for them to have a good, clean, usable trail available. I have a friend that walks it every day, rain or shine, and she thinks about me and 'Cliff's Trail'. I like that. I see the value of that, and the passion that good, outdoor spaces can engender. These are the spaces where life happens!" – Cliff W.

"Since joining the Committee, I've established local connections with like-minded people looking to improve the trail and encourage others to enjoy the outdoors. We work together to make improvements to the trail, and currently, I am advocating for benches on the trail! Being part of the FBRTC team has been a rewarding experience." – Sue F.

"I first got involved with the FBRTC to help develop the local rail trail and offer outdoor recreation opportunities for myself and my kids. What I received back was much more! Serving on the committee has connected me to neighbors and leaders in my community and has led to friendships both professionally and personally. I feel good giving back, and at the same time helping to create opportunities for people to improve their health and connect with nature." - Marc K.

How You Can Help
Each year, the committee selects volunteer-leaders to maintain and advocate for the Southern New England Trunkline Trail, and your help is critical at this time. Prior experience in nonprofits is important but not required!

To get involved and make a difference, please complete the form. You can also reach out for information by email at fbrtcommittee@gmail.com.

Thank you for your interest in the rail trail effort. We look forward to hearing from you!

Amber Baur Named Chair of Franklin Food Pantry Board of Directors

The Franklin Food Pantry is proud to welcome Amber Baur as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. As a dedicated volunteer and long-time supporter, Amber brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to The Pantry’s mission of combating food insecurity in the community.

Amber's leadership has been instrumental in many of The Pantry's initiatives. She played a pivotal role in ensuring The Pantry's Service Enterprise Certification, a prestigious accreditation awarded by the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement and Points of Light recognizing a nonprofit’s commitment to effectively delivering on their missions by strategically engaging volunteer time and talent.

More recently, she contributed to the nonprofit’s 2024 Strategic Plan, a comprehensive effort to identify community needs and develop sustainable strategies to address them. She volunteers regularly at The Pantry, greeting and assisting clients while they shop, and serves as Captain of The Pantry's Falmouth Road Race Team.

"I am incredibly passionate about the work being done at the Franklin Food Pantry," said Amber. "It is an honor and a privilege to step into this leadership role and collaborate with such a dedicated team to combat hunger and support our neighbors who are facing food insecurity.”

Originally from California, Amber holds both an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and an MBA. She and her family have been residents of Franklin since 2007, and her son attended Franklin Public Schools.

"We're incredibly fortunate to have Amber's expertise and mission-driven leadership on our Board," said Tina Powderly, Executive Director, Franklin Food Pantry. "Her unwavering support for clients, staff, and volunteers is evident in everything she does, and we know that she’ll continue to advance our fight against food insecurity in the community."

For the past year, Amber has been preparing for her new role by serving as Co-chair of the Board of Directors alongside Rachel Flum. Rachel, who chaired the Board from May 2023 to June 2024, and then served as Co-chair from July 2024 to June 2025, recently concluded her term. Board member Judi Perez also finished her term. Both Rachel and Judi’s dedication and hard work were essential to The Pantry’s achievements over the past few years, and they will be greatly missed.

Town of Franklin to Establish a 250th Anniversary Celebration Committee

The Town of Franklin is excited to announce the establishment of a 250th Anniversary Celebration Committee. The Committee will plan, organize, and carry out events and activities pertaining to Franklin’s 250th Anniversary celebration, which will be held throughout the Town’s semiquincentennial year, culminating with a signature event marking the Town’s 250th anniversary of March 2, 2028.

“The Town Council is enthusiastic in establishing this committee in recognition of Franklin’s 250th Anniversary”, stated Town Council Chair Thomas Mercer. “The mission of the Committee is to have events throughout the year recognizing Franklin’s Past, Present and Future - engaging all Franklinites in a celebratory, collaborative, and unified manner.”

Thirteen voting members and five ex officio non-voting staff members will be appointed to the Committee. Of the thirteen voting members, one member from the Cultural District Committee, Cultural Council, Historical Commission, and Library Board of Directors will be recommended to the Town Administrator by the Chair of each committee, and one member of the Dean College organization will be recommended by the College’s President or Interim President.  Eight At-Large Franklin residents will be selected through the Town’s standard volunteer application process. The terms of the committee members will end on June 30, 2029.

“The Committee will be asked to engage town boards, committees and departments for input, ideas and collaboration on the yearlong celebration and plan a rich program of events and activities”, said Franklin Town Administrator Jamie Hellen. “Due to the nature of this committee, the Town is able to establish a fund in accordance with MGL Chapter 53, Section 53i and fundraise to finance these programs. The Town anticipates hosting events and activities similar to what many other communities have done during their celebrations, such as a gala, carnival, parade, concert, fireworks, time capsule, monument, tours, a tree or other commemorative gesture, or whatever creative ideas the committee comes up with that tells Franklin's unique story.”

Franklin residents interested in serving on the Committee should apply via the Town’s Online Volunteer Application Form. The application will remain open to the community until September 15, 2025.  The Town anticipates that the Committee will begin meeting this October, 2025

Franklin Letter Carriers Help “Stamp Out Hunger” with Annual Food Drive

The Franklin Food Pantry and Franklin Letter Carriers held the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, on Saturday, May 10, 2025. The town-wide event, led by the letter carriers, raised nearly 9,000 pounds of food and household items, which equates to approximately 7,500 meals, for individuals and families who are experiencing hunger and financial hardship in Franklin, Massachusetts. The outpouring of support comes at a critical time for The Pantry. Demand for the nonprofit’s programs and services continues to increase, and the community’s support is essential to meeting the growing need.

The Pantry began preparations for this year’s Stamp Out Hunger in October 2024. Volunteers, including youth groups, local businesses, houses of worship, and retirement communities volunteered their time to assemble Stamp Out Hunger bundles that included instructions and a paper bag, donated by Allegra Print and Marketing and Central Paper Company, Inc.

A week prior to the event, letter carriers delivered the bundles to approximately 6,000 households in Franklin. On May 10, 2025, Franklin residents left donations of nonperishable food and goods by their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect along their route. Letter carriers brought the items to the Franklin Senior Center where volunteers set up stations to sort and organize the donations. The items will be distributed to clients through The Pantry’s several food assistance programs including Inside Shopping, Home Delivery, Mobile Pantries, Weekend Backpacks, Curbside Distribution, and more.

“Stamp Out Hunger plays a vital role in providing much-needed support to neighbors facing food insecurity and helps ensure The Pantry can provide nutritious food for individuals and families leading up to the summer months,” said Anne McGillis, Operations Director, Franklin Food Pantry. “We extend a heartfelt thank you to our amazing letter carriers, the Franklin Senior Center for generously providing space for the immense undertaking of receiving and sorting the donations, our dedicated volunteers who gave their time leading up to and on the day of the event, and the Franklin community for their ongoing generosity. It truly takes a village to combat food insecurity, and the overwhelming participation makes a tangible and profound difference in the lives of so many.”

Individuals, households, and businesses who did not receive a Pantry bundle or who did not have an opportunity to participate in Stamp Out Hunger can bring donations to the Franklin Food Pantry, 341 W Central St. in Franklin, and place items in the purple bin on the loading dock at the back of the building. Items can also be shipped directly through The Pantry’s Amazon Wish List.

Special thanks to the many individuals and groups who volunteered to help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger a success including Benchmark Senior Living at Forge Hill, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Coldwell Banker Realty Franklin/Cumberland Regional Office, Dell Technologies, The Enclave of Franklin, Eversource Energy, First Universalist Society in Franklin, Franklin Federated Church, Franklin High School Boys Soccer Team, G&C Plumbing, Inc., The Language and Behavior Center (TLBC) New England, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Milford High School Football Team, Sensata Technologies, Station 117 Apartment Group, UDR Apartment Group.

Franklin Food Pantry Celebrates National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month, a special time to recognize the invaluable contributions of volunteers. The Franklin Food Pantry kicked off this important month by hosting its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, which celebrates the incredible impact volunteers have on the organization and the Franklin community.

The luncheon held on April 3, 2025, was made possible by G&C Plumbing and Heating who sponsored the event, and New England Chapel who provided the space. Elizabeth’s Bagels, The Rome Restaurant, Starbucks on E Central St., Twist Bakery & Cafe, and volunteer bakers provided food, paper goods, desserts, and more. Paul Vicario Studio beautifully captured the event through photography.

Each week, more than 120 individuals volunteer their time at the Franklin Food Pantry making it possible to deliver essential food assistance and service programs to over 850 households in Franklin. Their efforts support vital initiatives such as in-person and walk-in shopping, curbside pickup, mobile pantries at three Franklin locations, Kids’ Snack Bags, the Weekend Backpack Program, holiday meal packages, the Community Gardens Program, and many more. In 2024 alone, Franklin Food Pantry volunteers collectively contributed over 12,000 hours of their time and talent.

Senator Becca Rausch addressed the volunteers, stating, “Your work is irreplaceable. Volunteers keep The Pantry’s warehouse full, the shelves stocked, and the operation running smoothly. You pack the backpacks, load the mobile pantry, and assist shoppers. Every hour you spend is a labor of love. And there is so much love supporting this organization and uplifting the people it serves.”

State Representative Jeff Roy presented the 2024 President’s Volunteer Service Award to 39 exceptional volunteers whose service has significantly impacted the Franklin community and serves as an inspiration to others.

The Gold Award, recognizing over 500 volunteer hours in the past year, was presented to Amber Baur. The Silver Award, for 250 to 499 volunteer hours, was awarded to David Bascom, Vicki Coates, Diane Daddario, Suzanne Gendreau, and Kym Pruitt.

Lynn Rizzolo, Maureen Sabolinski, Nancy Schoen, Pamela Spicer, Debra Stiffler, and Lawrence Verney.

“We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary contributions of our volunteer team,” said Tina Powderly, Executive Director, Franklin Food Pantry. "Every hour they give, always with a smile, has a profound impact on our client. They are the driving force behind our ability to offer a diverse array of essential programs with dignity, and we are deeply grateful."
