Media Nation: "Adopt A Station is an ingenious effort to help at-risk public radio outlets"

This is ingenious. On Monday, Media Nation commenter Steve Stein asked:
"The $1.1B cut to public broadcasting is less than $10 per taxpayer. (BTW, is that PER YEAR or over 10 years?) [Congress rescinded spending that had been approved over the next two years.]

I plan on upping my yearly pledge to public radio in some form. Should I up my pledge to WHYY? Would that help the situation nationally? (My guess is WHYY is doing very well compared to, say, WYSO in Yellow Springs OH) Do you think there will be a mechanism from NPR or CPB that could funnel money from the bigger stations to the rural stations that will bear the brunt of cuts?"
Later that day, Nieman Lab mentioned a tool called Adopt A Station. You call up the public radio stations in your state (or in any state), and you are shown a station in another part of the country that’s losing more than 50% of its funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, whose funding was eliminated by Donald Trump and the Republican Congress. Overall, local public radio stations are losing $350 million in federal funding in each of the next two years.

If you call up Pennsylvania in Adopt A Station, you’ll see that Steve’s station, Philadelphia-based WHYY, is losing just 2% of its funding. But Adopt A Station suggests that he consider supporting not just WHYY but also WRVS in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, which is losing 71% of its funding. Elizabeth City is located in the northeast corner of the state, about 45 miles south of Norfolk Virginia.

Note: Franklin TV does not receive Federal funding so we are not on the listing. However, we are a 501(c)3 charitable organization and can accept contributions.

Amber Baur Named Chair of Franklin Food Pantry Board of Directors

The Franklin Food Pantry is proud to welcome Amber Baur as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. As a dedicated volunteer and long-time supporter, Amber brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to The Pantry’s mission of combating food insecurity in the community.

Amber's leadership has been instrumental in many of The Pantry's initiatives. She played a pivotal role in ensuring The Pantry's Service Enterprise Certification, a prestigious accreditation awarded by the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement and Points of Light recognizing a nonprofit’s commitment to effectively delivering on their missions by strategically engaging volunteer time and talent.

More recently, she contributed to the nonprofit’s 2024 Strategic Plan, a comprehensive effort to identify community needs and develop sustainable strategies to address them. She volunteers regularly at The Pantry, greeting and assisting clients while they shop, and serves as Captain of The Pantry's Falmouth Road Race Team.

"I am incredibly passionate about the work being done at the Franklin Food Pantry," said Amber. "It is an honor and a privilege to step into this leadership role and collaborate with such a dedicated team to combat hunger and support our neighbors who are facing food insecurity.”

Originally from California, Amber holds both an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and an MBA. She and her family have been residents of Franklin since 2007, and her son attended Franklin Public Schools.

"We're incredibly fortunate to have Amber's expertise and mission-driven leadership on our Board," said Tina Powderly, Executive Director, Franklin Food Pantry. "Her unwavering support for clients, staff, and volunteers is evident in everything she does, and we know that she’ll continue to advance our fight against food insecurity in the community."

For the past year, Amber has been preparing for her new role by serving as Co-chair of the Board of Directors alongside Rachel Flum. Rachel, who chaired the Board from May 2023 to June 2024, and then served as Co-chair from July 2024 to June 2025, recently concluded her term. Board member Judi Perez also finished her term. Both Rachel and Judi’s dedication and hard work were essential to The Pantry’s achievements over the past few years, and they will be greatly missed.

You can take action (send an email) ASAP to help with funding local PEG studios (like Franklin.TV)

As you know, local PEG studios like Franklin.TV are nonprofit charities - funded by law via cable subscriber access fees.

As more subscribers 'cut the cord', our revenue drops.

In 2025, we are now below the revenue we had 15 years ago in 2010. Inflation has raised our costs in that same time period beyond an additional 50%.

The MA Telecom Committee on Beacon Hill has a hearing on July 10th. They are discussing legislation to mitigate our falling revenue via streaming TV access fees.

An Act to modernize funding for community media programming

Some believe that we are irrelevant - a relic of old legacy TV service. We are definitely not that. Today, most PEG studios provide free live streaming for local community groups and their events, school sports, government meetings, and much more.

A letter of support from your organization to the committee legislators would be a great help.

Simply describe our work with you and how we have been helpful - and if so, even beyond producing any TV programs.

If the pending legislation fails, we will soon be forced to reduce our current level of community engagement and support.

We were given short notice and wish to show support from our community. Below is an email list of direct legislative committee contacts.

Please send your letter of support to them and please cc me as well.

We are testifying before the committee on Jul 10, 2025.  Hearing ->   https://malegislature.gov/Events/Hearings/Detail/5274

We hope to have them report out the pending bills favorably for a vote.

Much thanks,
Pete Fasciano
