"Here at Children's Museum of Franklin, we're passionate about the importance of empowering girls.
The Lean In Girls curriculum, a subset of Sheryl Sandberg's original Lean In program, was established in 2023 as a “leadership program that helps girls see themselves as leaders in a world that often tells them they’re not.”
Over the course of the program, through strength-building activities and discussion, participants will learn resilience, confidence, and inclusivity.
This is a free program!"

FM #493 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 493 in the series.
This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Angelina Perez. Angelina is a senior at Franklin High School and was the co-emcee and a panelist for the #EqualEverywhere: Champions for Change - International Women’s day event.
We had our conversation via conference bridge to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.
We talk about:
Girl Up
Her many other activities at high school
Preparing for an internship for her senior project
Preparing for college
The link to the video of the #EqualEverywhere event is included in the show notes. Our conversation runs about 25 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Angelina. Audio file = https://player.captivate.fm/episode/b4956da7-d42f-46fa-a02e-788ee9d127ae

Take-And-Make Craft for Adults: Embroidery Kit
In a collaboration with the Franklin Mill Store, the Franklin Public Library is now offering Take-And-Make craft kits for adults! The project for January is embroidery kits. The embroidery kits include everything you need to create your own hand embroidered hoop. The pattern design is pre-printed on 100% cotton fabric, so there's no need for transferring or tracing. Just pop the fabric in the hoop, thread your needle, and start stitching!
These make easy and wonderful gifts. Embroidery is a great way to slow down, get cozy, and get crafty. Each kit contains: pre-printed (in color) fabric pattern, coordinating embroidery floss, needle, wooden hoop(s), full color card with image on front and stitching notes on back, a 'getting started with hand embroidery' guide and instructional how-to for basic stitches. The finished design is sized to fit nicely in a 6" hoop.
Kits are available to the first 35 Franklin residents to register, and will be placed in Curbside Pickup. To register, please contact Assistant Library Director Kim Shipala at 508-520-4941, or email kshipala@minlib.net .
Franklin Public Library Book Club, Tuesday, February 23, 7:00 p.m.
The book for discussion is Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid.
Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix's desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other. With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," the complicated reality of being a grown up, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.
To reserve a copy of the book or for more information, please contact Assistant Library Director Kim Shipala at kshipala@minlib.net . To register, please visit https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcsf-yrrDIuGNZUG2MU5BiraLtGa3d... .
Online Resources
Even though we are closed to the public, the Library still has so much to offer! Here are updates and information regarding the Library's services during this closure:
There is a light at the end of the town’s summer-long water treatment plant repair tunnel that has kept the town on a full water ban since July.
Department of Public Works Director Brutus Cantoreggi said Wednesday via the department’s social media that the town has all the parts needed to get its main water treatment plant up and running.
The plant at 10 Public Works Way was shut down on July 7, along with the town’s two largest and oldest wells associated with it, as a result of a fire in one of the tanks.
“We finally have all the parts needed to fully restore the water treatment plant after the fire,” Cantoreggi reported. “Our crews are currently working to install the parts and we hope to have everything ready very soon.”
"A nonprofit organization hopes to equip 100 teen girls from low- to moderate-income families with the skills needed to launch a business, nonprofit or community project.
Girls with Impact, a group that aims to supply next-generation leaders with a strong network for both the corporate and public sectors, announced recently that it will give 100 girls scholarships to an online academy where they can learn how to build a business or nonprofit.
The deadline to apply is Monday. Applications can be submitted online at girlswithimpact.com. Scholarships are made possible by support of Eversource Energy and Boston Scientific, according to a press release.
The live, online program is designed with Harvard University experts. It guides girls through ideation to a plausible business plan. Along the way, the girls learn about concepts such as competition, targeting customers, finances and marketing."

Girls Who Code is Coming to Franklin Public Library! |
"Franklin lost only three games all of last season and had one of the league’s best defensive records, allowing only 10 goals in 18 games. That solidity in the defensive third will be hard to replicate, as the Panthers graduated three of last year’s back four, but there is also hope that the promising young attackers can take some of the pressure off by improving on the team’s 40 goals scored, which was seventh best in the Hock.Read the full listing online at HockomockSports.com
Senior Sabrina Addi is the lone returning defender for the Panthers, but she will get help from senior goalie Breanna Atwood to try and organize an inexperienced defense. Freshman Norah Anderson will jump into the center of the defense and looks ready for the physical challenge of Hock play. Senior Sam Powderly will drop back from midfield to help out as well.
Once the Panthers get the ball back, there are plenty of familiar faces to try and get goals. Senior Anna Balkus can play a number of different positions, including in the heart of midfield, the wing, or in the attack. Sophomore Stella Regan is coming off a breakout rookie season and adds even more pace to the center of the pitch, while senior Carly Alston is a solid performer on both sides of the ball. In the attack, juniors Erin Quaile and Sydney St. Marie are looking to make the leap to add more consistent scoring.
“I know the kids with experience won’t back down,” said Franklin coach Tom Geysen, “but I need to see how the younger kids will react to this level. I need to see if they can physically cope with playing where I need them to play.”
