FRANKLIN — Juniors and seniors at Franklin High School recently got a firsthand look at potential career paths, when the school hosted a Career Fair in its library during the WIN block.

Ten organizations participated in the event, representing a range of fields including trade schools, home service companies and public safety — with the Franklin Police and Fire Departments among those in attendance.

Approximately 50 junior and senior students moved through the space engaging directly with community professionals, exploring trades and careers beyond the traditional four-year college track.

"I want to thank the Career Fair team for their work in organizing this opportunity for our students," said Superintendent Lucas Giguere. "Events like this give our students direct access to professionals and possibilities they might not otherwise encounter. We're proud to support opportunities that connect Franklin students to their community and their future."

Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dr. Tina Rogers shared that sentiment after spending time at the fair herself.

"The conversations happening between students and professionals throughout the fair were exactly what this kind of event is meant to produce," said Dr. Rogers. "We look forward to building on this and creating more opportunities like it for our students."

The event was the first career fair the district has hosted in some time and hopes it will become a recurring opportunity for students.

Franklin High School Theater Company presents "The Curious Case of the Cottingley Fairies" - May 22 - 23

      via FHSTC

Have you ever seen a fairy before?

It’s official… Franklin High School Theater Company presents The Curious Case of the Cottingley Fairies directed by Riley MacDonald this May 22nd & 23rd!

Based on a true event, this play follows the story of two cousins, Lilli Barnes and Mabel Hallam, who supposedly captured photographs of fairies during the grim time of World War I. Their photos quickly took over the world, capturing the attentions of reporters, spiritualists, and professors everywhere.

Join us this May in the FHS Auditorium to watch as the imaginative world of these girls comes to life, as well as how quickly this crazy story of theirs spirals out of control.

Keep an eye out on all of our socials for more information regarding tickets and updates on the show!

Capital Campaign launched by FHS Theater Company Boosters & Franklin Music Boosters

      Dear Franklin Community,

The performing arts in our schools have experienced reductions in staffing and programming over the years due to budget constraints. However, we believe this community, one that deeply values the arts, can help reverse that trend by revitalizing our facilities and creating a space where students can truly thrive.

The Franklin High School Theatre Company Boosters and Franklin Music Boosters are launching a joint Capital Campaign to enhance performing arts facilities and equipment. Every dollar raised will go directly toward providing Franklin Public Schools students with the tools they need to deliver high-quality theater and music productions with the projects listed below. In a community of more than 30,000 residents, even small contributions can add up to meaningful change.

The FMS Auditorium is a high-traffic hub for school assemblies, concerts, and community rentals. The Franklin Middle School Footlighters, our after-school theater club, is more than just a performance; ticket revenue helps sustain future productions and supports a long-standing tradition of student involvement in the arts. This year, the Footlighters were unable to offer their annual production, limiting students’ first opportunity to experience theater in our public schools.

Aging facilities and failing equipment remain a challenge, and without improvements, opportunities like this are at risk. With improved facilities, we can restore this opportunity and ensure it continues for future FMS students.

Your support will directly impact students’ access to meaningful arts experiences. This Capital Campaign aims to raise $100,000 by July 1st, 2026, to fund the following needs:

Franklin High School Sophomore Earns Third Place in Liminal Essay Contest

Saanvi Reddy honored for essay "Liminality: a Rising Tide"

Franklin High School sophomore Saanvi Reddy has been awarded Third Place in the High School division of the 4th Annual Liminal Essay Contest, sponsored by author S. K. Kruse. Reddy's essay, "Liminality: a Rising Tide," was recognized for its evocative and perceptive exploration of threshold experience.

Reddy's essay responds to S. K. Kruse's short story "Goodbye, Bonavento," exploring how liminal experience—the state of being between what was and what has not yet come—can swell and intensify over time, like a rising tide. Contest judge Timothy Carson praised all of the high school finalists for meeting the complexity of the source material with honesty and depth.

"By engaging with this powerful story these young writers toured the haunted halls of liminality which are never simple, easy or even solvable. So very often liminality is a condition as much as a passage. And that, as so much literature of the ages testifies, holds equal measures of tragedy and hope. In one way or another all of these writers walked the line between those magnetized poles."
      —Judge Timothy Carson

Reddy's achievement is particularly notable as a sophomore competing against older students in the high school division.

The Liminal Essay Contest, now in its fourth year, invites high school writers to explore the concept of liminality—the experience of threshold, transition, and in-between states—through close reading of selected literary works. This year's contest was based on S. K. Kruse's short story "Goodbye, Bonavento." To read the winning essays and learn more about the contest, visit

Franklin High School Freshman Wins Third Place in Poetry Out Loud State Final

Franklin High School is proud to share that freshman Marina Zaki recently won third place at the Poetry Out Loud state final.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of poetry through a recitation competition for high school students. Participants memorize and recite poems selected from the Poetry Out Loud database and are judged based on their physical presence, voice and articulation, interpretation, evidence of understanding and overall performance.

On March 8, Marina competed against students from 48 other schools across Massachusetts. She performed "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, "My Grandmother's Love Letters" by Hart Crane and "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke, ending her competitive run with a third-place finish.

The Poetry Out Loud program begins at a local level, with students volunteering to perform in their own schools. Marina won the schoolwide competition and moved on to the district level, where she earned a top five spot and advanced to the state competition at the Old South Meeting House in Boston.

The first-place finisher at the state level advances to the final, national competition.

Marina was inspired to participate in Poetry Out Loud after watching her sister perform in the competition two years prior.

“Seeing so many emphatic and passionate people presenting these poems and telling their story as if it was unfolding right in front of my eyes really inspired me,” Marina said.

“We are so proud of Marina for winning third place at the Poetry Out Loud state final,” said Principal Maria Weber. “The confidence she exudes during performances is inspiring, and it has been an honor to see her grow as she advanced through the competition. We are also so grateful to English teacher Erin Kennerley, who worked closely with the Poetry Out Loud program to bring the competition to Franklin High School and guide students through each round. Without her efforts, Marina and her classmates would not have had this opportunity.”

Franklin High School Student Named Finalist for National Merit Scholarship Award

Franklin High School is proud to share that senior Gavin Warnakulasooriya was recently selected as a finalist for a National Merit Scholarship Award by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Gavin is one of about 15,000 students across the nation chosen as a finalist. Throughout March, NMSC will select 6,930 students from the pool of finalists to win National Merit Scholarships totaling nearly $26 million.

The journey to finalist status is lengthy, with students first entering the contest with a group of 50,000 top finishers in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also known as the Preliminary SAT. Then, 16,000 qualifying students, or about 1% of U.S. high school seniors, earned semifinalist status and were considered as finalists.

After being named as a semifinalist last October, Gavin submitted an application and essay, received a high school official's recommendation and confirmed his PSAT score with a high SAT or ACT score to be considered as a finalist.

Gavin is an active participant in the FHS community, serving as captain of the mock trial and debate teams, president of the Science National Honor Society, member of Mu Alpha Theta (the United States mathematics honor society), and varsity member of the track and field team. He was previously a member of the math team and played soccer.

In college, Gavin plans to pursue physics and cognitive science. His passion for learning has led him to pursue personal projects and offer help to his peers.

"I love sharing knowledge in any form, which has led me to peer tutor many friends and author a handbook guide for one of FHS's physics courses, something I found especially rewarding," Gavin said. "More than anything, I would describe myself as a curious learner, and I hope to carry that spirit with me throughout my future."

He is described by faculty as a passionate learner and a humble, kind and personable young man.

"We are so proud of Gavin for being named as a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship," said Principal Maria Weber. "This is a well-deserved honor that he has worked tirelessly to achieve. Gavin's dedication to his studies and passion for sharing knowledge with others has not gone unnoticed, and I am happy to see him recognized for his efforts."

"I want to congratulate Gavin on this impressive achievement," said Superintendent Lucas Giguere. "It is exciting to see students recognized for their hard work, especially on a prestigious level such as the National Merit Scholarship Program. I look forward to seeing where Gavin's dedication and enthusiasm for his education will take him in the future."

      About National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Since its founding, NMSC has recognized over 3.4 million students and provided some 451,000 scholarships worth over $1.8 billion. The honors awarded by NMSC to exceptionally able students are viewed as definitive marks of excellence. Recipients of Merit Scholarship® awards, Achievement Scholarship® awards, and corporate-sponsored Special Scholarships have increased the nation's respect for intellectual accomplishments and have contributed significantly to its talent pool of future leaders.

Franklin High Spanish National Honor Society Students Bring Spanish to Second Graders at Lincoln Street School

Franklin High School’s World Language Department recently partnered with Lincoln Street School to give second graders an interactive introduction to Spanish.

Members of the high school's Spanish National Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) planned and led an interactive lesson focused on greetings, simple conversational language and colors.

The high school students designed materials, rehearsed their lesson and incorporated visuals, movement and structured interactions to make the experience engaging and accessible for the second graders.

The Massachusetts World Languages Curriculum Framework’s Lifelong Learning Standards encourage students to use language beyond the classroom, engage with their community, and build intercultural understanding. That was exactly the mission of the Spanish National Honor Society's visit to Lincoln School

“By teaching younger students, our high school students move beyond using Spanish simply to meet academic requirements; they use the language as a vehicle for service, leadership and authentic communication,” said Laura Evans, Director of World Languages at Franklin Public Schools.

The project benefited students at all levels. Second graders gained early, positive exposure to a world language and increased cultural curiosity while interacting with high school role models who demonstrate the value of multilingualism. Meanwhile, the high school students practiced authentic language use and strengthened leadership and public speaking skills.

The Franklin High chapter of the Spanish National Honor Society has 65 members who complete meaningful service hours each year to promote Spanish language, culture and multilingualism in the community.

"I want to thank Laura Evans, Laura Keenan, and our entire World Language Department for creating opportunities that extend beyond the high school classroom," said Dr. Tina Rogers, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning. "This opportunity allowed our high school students to step into a leadership role and give back to younger students in a meaningful way. Cross-school collaboration is powerful for our district, and this visit is a strong example of that."
