Franklin Art Association features Rachel Diamond Calow at the March 3, 2026 meeting

The Franklin Art Association warmly welcomes the public to it’s next public meeting at 6:30 PM on March 3 2026 at the Franklin Senior Center at 6:30 PM.

Our artist demonstrator will be visual artist and urban sketcher, Rachel Diamond Calow. She is known for her expressive travel notebooks and illustrated journals. Because her recent world cruise moved quickly from port to port, many of her sketchbook pages were created from her own travel photographs; blending on-location experience with her reflective drawings. This hybrid approach forms the foundation of her newly published book, “Port to Port: A sketchbook Journey Around the World”.

Come to hear her discussion about her urban sketching process, using the audience as a springboard for discussing subject selection, composition and color and gesture choices on Wednesday, March 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, Franklin Senior Center.

She will bring her small artworks and printed postcard samples. Calow will also share samples from her travel sketchbooks, paired with her photography, and pages from her current reflective sketchbook project, “My Life in Days”, which combines everyday moments into expressive, non-sequential illustrated spreads.

Franklin Art Association: Musings from the FAA President

Musings from the President:

Hello Friends and Members,

Art doesn’t have to shout to be powerful.

Choosing to make art is a quiet kind of rebellion. It’s a way of saying I’m still paying attention — to beauty, to feeling and to one another. Every sketch, stroke, movement, or experiment pushes back against the idea that everything must be efficient and profitable.

Franklin Art Association: Musings from the FAA President

At the Franklin Art Association, we believe art is both a joy and a civic act. It builds connection, invites curiosity, and reminds us that imagination is a renewable resource.

Making something, anything, together is how we practice hope.
So keep creating.

With gratitude and optimism,

Nicole Horsman

Drawing from his own experiences as a man, an athlete, and manual laborer, Sullivan examines the social and psychological tension between vulnerability and strength imagery embedded in masculine identity. He hopes his work will challenge fixed ideas of masculinity and tradition. Wood, steel, worn leather, industrial remnants and animal images, etc.

Come to hear his discussion about masculine traditional imagery with his sculptural examples and demonstration on Wednesday, February 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, Franklin Senior Center.

Katie is a landscape and still life painter who currently lives in New Haven, CT.   She received her undergraduate degree in painting from Tyler School in Philadelphia. A year studying in Rome opened her eyes to fresco and oil painting.  She taught art in public school, as she painted and took classes to develop her own skills.

Katie's work is inspired by the everyday moments of beauty that surround us. She hopes her paintings and demonstrations will bring light and joy to others, and she says of her approach:
"My work is inspired by the everyday moments of beauty that surround us. Whether I’m painting a still life in the studio or a landscape outdoors, I hope to capture the fleeting sense of light and space, as well as infusing the work with feeling and authenticity. The process of putting paint to canvas and creating something that’s never been made before continues to excite me and fill me with anticipation!"
Why not make it a your New Year's resolution to join us on Wednesday, January 7 and all our monthly meetings for art instruction, the camaraderie of art conversation and refreshments at intermission.

Franklin Art Association welcomes Paul Olson as their demo artist for Sep 3 Meeting

The Franklin Art Association is excited to welcome Paul Olson as their demo artist on Wednesday, September 3, to kick off their 2025-2026 season.  The FAA meets at the Franklin Senior Center at 6:30pm first Wednesday of each month, where new members and the public are invited.

Paul will demo his approach to plein-air painting.  Paul Olson is a Rhode Island-based plein-air painter inspired by the natural splendor of our beautiful Narragansett Bay. Olson’s artwork reflects his deep connection with nature and his love for the flora and fauna of the coastal landscape around him. He can often be found at his easel on his small boat, documenting the effects of wind and weather, sky and water. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the Northeast, and in some less traditional spaces like the Providence Place Mall and the Local 251 Teamsters Union Hall.

Paul is also a lover of trees, having had two exhibitions of tree paintings at Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, and is a potter making containers for Bonsai, and cultivating his own collection of miniature trees.

Olson has been a passionate teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) with a career spanning over 25 years. Semi-retired but still teaching Oil Painting as a Senior Critic in the Illustration Department at RISD, Paul now spends more time out painting, enjoying being part of the landscape in the open air.
