The Hockomock Area YMCA Teamed Up with Soldiers’ Angels Treats for Troops to Collect Halloween Candy for Troops and Veterans

By virtue of families, non-profit groups, radio sponsorship and corporate philanthropy, the Hockomock Area YMCA is gratified to share results of the recent candy giveback spearheaded at the Franklin Y to aid and comfort the men, women and veterans of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Treats for Troops ran successfully and was a rewarding initiative for Brandi Jacobs, senior membership experience director at the Franklin Y—who launched the community-wide effort. “Many times, following Halloween, the Y gets inquiries about sharing extra candy with soldiers. The Y has historically been happy to do so, however shipping costs can add up and that can be an obstacle toward pulling off such a drive.”

The Hockomock Area YMCA, with facilities in Franklin, Foxboro and North Attleboro, has 31,000 members as well as meaningful partnerships within the fifteen communities served. So when Jacobs enrolled on Halloween Day to become a Soldiers’ Angels drop-off site, she guessed there would be no shortage of donations. 

“In the end, our collective purpose to provide comfort to those who serve meant we would find a way to cover shipping costs and deliver donations where they would have the most impact. The fact that there is a national nonprofit, Soldiers’ Angels, that coordinates volunteers with the mission that no soldier goes unloved was instrumental in moving us in the right direction,” said Jacobs.

Shortly after sharing the drive’s goals and drop off locations, the Y received a call from radio host Ray Auger, intent on publicizing the drive over the 101.3 FM network. Donations following the November 8 radio interview with Jacobs poured in, including from the following: members of the YMCA, community members, Dell Technologies, Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School in Blackstone, Dudley Elementary School, and The Franklin Lion’s Club through their collection across Franklin public schools.

On November 19, an astonishing 2,258 pounds of candy–in 102 boxes–was loaded onto a truck headed to Stratton VAMC/Voluntary Service in Albany, NY. A sincere thank you goes out to Marine veteran Jeff Harris, owner of LBP Solutions of Foxboro, who offered to rent a truck and drive the candy to its destination.

Although the gesture of donating excess candy may seem small, it is a wonderful way to remind our men and women in the Armed Forces, as well as veterans of all eras, that we are all thankful for the services and sacrifices they have provided for our country and our families.

Franklin Lions: Annual candy give back this week

Annual candy give back starts this week. Jefferson and Parmenter schools are collecting for the Franklin Lions. 

The Franklin Lions will also be set up at the VFW post on Pond Street Sunday 12-2.

Last year we sent over 750 lbs, we hope to reach 1,000 this year.

Come show your support for our troops near and far by bringing your candy and cards of thanks.

Franklin Lions Candy Drop collects over 550 pounds

From November 1 - 7, the Franklin Lions Club collected candy for their 3rd Annual Candy Drop. All candy donated is delivered to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude. 

This year, thanks to the parishioners of St. Mary's, and families of Jefferson Elementary, Parmenter Elementary and Stapleton Elementary in Framingham, a total of 556 pounds was collected, sorted, boxed and shipped to support our troops. The largest collection yet. The club also donated 25 tooth care kits. 

Upcoming events include the Bellingham/Franklin Senior Luncheon on Saturday, December 5 and Painting with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 12. Please be on the lookout for more details.

Candy is not banned, can't be thrown!

Candy is not banned from the Franklin 4th of July parade. It can be handed out. It can not be thrown. Did you miss the candy incident? It was mentioned in two "letters to the editor" published by the Milford Daily News here and here.

Jeff Nutting clarified with this note:

Apparently thowing candy to kids watching the pararde has not been allowed for some time. In the past young kids would run out into the street which caused safety concerns as well as delays in the parade. The folks that run the parade ( warren revelle) explained to all the participants about this policy. Apparently one person did not get the message and was ask to stop by the police.

And Jeff also sent along this email from Warren Revill representing the July 4th Coalition Parade Committee

For years now, the "no throwing candy" in the Franklin 4th July parade has been the rule ever since a young boy in New Hampshire slid under a float chasing candy and was killed. To avoid this and similar tragedies , the rule was put into effect. 

Participants are advised of this and other rules when they register, however the Callahans did not register this year, they just showed up. 

It's hard at" Staging Area" to review all the rules with everyone, especially when the participants are out of sight of parade management, they do what they want (i.e. throw candy). 

The Franklin Police did what was asked of them by enforcing that rule and seeing to they safety of the public. Sometimes one has to sound forceful to make people understand rules. (and be heard above the Parade noise.) 

We applaud the Franklin Police for all they do during the 4th of July Celebration (and the rest of the year). 

The "no throwing candy" rule will not change. The safety of the public and participants is our major concern, not candy!

"We have to be faithful to our basics"

An earsplitting clanging echoed from the stone bell tower of Mount St. Mary's Abbey in Wrentham, calling to prayer about a dozen nuns ending their morning shift in the convent's Candy House.

The sisters, wrapped in work clothes and aprons, walked down a wooded path and through a clearing as they made their silent way home. By noon, they were wearing the crisp, white robes of their contemplative Cistercian order, and had joined 40 others to chant and pray inside the abbey's airy church.

Up at 3, pray and work all day, retire at 8.

So it goes for these nuns and others in the order that for 900 years has emulated St. Benedict in relying on one's hands for daily sustenance.

Here in Wrentham, off a country lane not far from Interstate 495, that means tending a flock of sheep for wool to make blankets and growing a bounty of fresh vegetables in the summer, and, for these sisters who are rarely seen in public, making Trappistine Quality Candy - and lots of it.
