"Presented by the Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek expanded its partnership with Music Drives Us to provide grants for events during its 2018 festival (April 27 – May 6).
A Franklin resident, Lydia Lucas, received a $500 performance grant to support the presentation of the event, Drumming Around the World, during ArtWeek. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 2-3 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School, 201 Main St., Franklin.
Through this hands-on musical experience, Drumming Around the World focuses on exploring different cultures and their musical styles through the art of drumming. Participants will learn elementary to intermediate rhythms by ear, participate in drum circles, practice improvisation skills, and learn the history of hand drumming."
"The U.S. opioid crisis has passed a dubious milestone: Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl have surpassed deaths involving prescription opioids.
This change occurred in 2016, according to data published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. And it seemed to happen pretty suddenly.
Data from the National Vital Statistics System show that there were 42,249 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. That includes 19,413 that involved synthetic opioids, 17,087 that involved prescription opioids and 15,469 that involved heroin. (In some cases, more than one type of drug was implicated in the death.)"

"A bylaw change that would allow for less paperwork for certain building renovations and alterations has moved forward, though the Town Council must make its final decision at a future meeting.
The council at its meeting last week gave preliminary approval to a limited site plan requirement. The change would allow those with buildings constructed before the town required site plans to do certain alterations without going through the expense of a full site plan.
Town officials have noted that full site plans cost a great deal, as they require engineering work and notification of neighbors. This, they said, may dissuade building owners from making improvements.
Town Planning Director Bryan Taberner, speaking to the council, cited the problems faced when Aubuchon Hardware was looking to move into the Horace Mann Shopping Plaza. Only a late discovery of needed documents, he said, kept the project moving."

| The consolidation of Aubuchon Hardware from its two locations into one at the Horace Mann Plaza is an example of the bylaw change being reviewed. The development of the Ficco's-Kegan property is also slowed waiting on this change according to word on the street. |
"The Drummers’ Studio, 244 E. Central St., will host a special two-day Summer Drum Camp for kids with “no prior drum experience” on Aug. 3 and 4. The new drummers will cover topics such as stick technique, music reading, basic beats, fills and songs.
The Drummers’ Studio Summer Open Houses will be held Aug. 6 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. TDS plays host to many drumming activities including: workshops, drum camps, clinics, drum factor field trips, concerts, recitals and more. TDS also plays host to some of the world’s elite drummers."
"For one member of the First Universalist Society of Franklin, the recent shooting in Orlando, Fla., hit close to home.
On Dec. 11, 2012, while the woman was working in a Sephora located in the Clackamas (Ore.) Town Center mall, she said “a man decided he was going to run in on holiday shoppers and open fire in our food court.”
The woman, who did not want her name used, was celebrating her honeymoon with her wife in Orlando on Sunday, when the shooting took place.
“Every single time one of these mass shootings happens," she said, "it’s like this wound is reopened.”
"The Drummers’ Studio, 244 East Central St., will host a series of summer drum camps for middle and elementary students the week of July 11-15.
Elementary students looking to have fun and/or prepare for middle school bands will cover the basics in reading, rudiments, styles and soloing. The middle school drum camp is designed to help students successfully prepare for Jazz and Concert Band auditions as well as the Central District auditions."
