Historic Happenings at the Franklin Historical Museum for August 2026

Revolutionaries in White: A Look Across Three Centuries of Bridal Fashion (Continuing from June) 

Brides didn't always wear white, but in the 19th century, a number of factors combined to make that the preferred color choice. Today, white remains dominant for American brides as well as for brides in many other lands.  Revolutionaries in White will display gowns spanning from the 19th to the 21st century, offering insights into rapid social changes, with groupings that include multi-generational family gowns and the unique 1946 Parachute Dress with its spectacular 13-foot train.  

Sunday, August 9-- Our `Second Sunday Speaker' topic is `Franklin’s Connection to the Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki’

Commissioner Scott Mason will share the remarkable story of Charles William Sweeney, an officer in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the pilot who flew Bockscar , the B-29 aircraft carrying the Fat Man atomic bomb to the Japanese city of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. Sweeney, a Quincy native, later became an officer in the Massachusetts Air National Guard and, later in life, resided in Franklin. 

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, Franklin. 

The museum is open Saturday mornings from 10AM-1PM (except as noted above), Sunday afternoons from 1:00PM-4:00PM,.

Second Sunday Speaker at Franklin Historical Museum to Talk Bridal Fashion - Karen “Ren” Antonowicz - July 14

Karen “Ren” Antonowicz

Sunday, July 14, the Franklin Historical Museum will be offering a conversation on bridal fashion with Karen “Ren” Antonowicz, a popular speaker and fashion expert who has presented at the museum before. Much of her presentation will refer to the large collection of bridal gowns on display at the museum through Aug. 4. 

Antonowicz received her Master’s Degree in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design, with a concentration in Historic Costume & Textiles from the University of RI.  She then taught History of Fashion and other courses full time at the college level for 13 years, and taught part time in the CE Program at the RI School of Design.

In the meantime, Ren and her husband, Mike, opened Nostalgia Antiques & Collectibles, a 3-floor co-op located on historic Wickenden St. in Providence, RI and ran the business for five years.

Doors open at 1:00 PM and the presentation begins at 1:15 at Franklin Historical Museum, 80 West Central Street, Franklin, MA. FREE

 

The gift shop is open during regular museum hours, Saturday mornings 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and Sunday afternoons 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Come in and find your history.
