Meta ending third-party fact-checking partnership with US partners, including PolitiFact
"Meta will get rid of factcheckers, “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship” and recommend more political content on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Threads, founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced. In a video message, Zuckerberg vowed to prioritise free speech after the return of Donald Trump to the White House and said that, starting in the US, he would “get rid of factcheckers and replace them with community notes similar to X”.X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, relies on other users to add caveats and context to contentious posts.Zuckerberg said Meta’s “factcheckers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created”."
"By now you may have seen the news that Meta is ending its partnership with fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact in the United States so, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg put it, Facebook can get “back to our roots around free expression.”Instead of relying on a group of 10 independent and independently operated journalism organizations, Zuckerberg said that Facebook would be launching a community notes program like the one that currently exists on X.We hope that program succeeds. But it didn’t need to be an either or. It could have been both.Back in 2016, when we were among the first group of journalism organizations to partner with Facebook to add fact-checks to online posts, we did so because we thought adding more speech, more voices and more information to what social media users saw online would help the information ecosystem.Facebook’s approach at the time was novel. Information from a set of independent journalists would be paired with posts online, and users would be able to see a fuller picture of the stories and news of the day.More speech.More information."

Instagram rules changes not going far enough
"Sevey Morton first got an Instagram account when she was 10 years old. She used it to keep up with friends, but also to follow pop culture trends. Now 16, the San Diego high schooler says all the airbrushed perfection and slickly edited selfies from celebrities and influencers made her hyper-focused on her appearance, causing anxiety and body image issues.“Being exposed to that at a very young age impacted the way I grew into myself,” Morton said. “There is a huge part of me that wishes social media did not exist.”Morton’s struggles inspired her film-maker mother, Laura, to direct Anxious Nation, a documentary on America’s so-called anxiety epidemic among adolescents. When Morton heard last week that Meta set new rules for teen accounts, she thought it was a good start – but not a solution.Meta, which owns Instagram, rolled out changes that give parents the ability to set daily time limits on the app and block teens from using Instagram at night. Parents can also see the accounts their children message, along with the content categories they view. Teen accounts are now private by default, and Meta said “sensitive content” – which could range from violence to influencers hawking plastic surgery – will be “limited”.

Every day community members, schools, police, fire, and groups in between call and email us with requests for information and support.
We are here to listen, answer your questions, and offer support on your terms."

Franklin Police provide good reminder to lock your cars at night!
"If you’re debating on whether you should lock your car tonight please reference this flow chart…
Last night we had a few cars gone through throughout town and officers recovered a stolen vehicle from a nearby community. It’s typical for stolen vehicles to be used in these crimes.
So…if you don’t want your vehicle being used to steal someone else’s belongings…lock your car!"

Spring ahead!! And lock your car(s)
"Here’s your friendly reminder to lock your cars. When you turn in for the night…lock your cars.
When you run into a store…lock your cars.
When your car is parked in your driveway or your neighborhood and you think, my car will never be broken into…lock your cars.
When your car is unattended for any amount of time…lock your cars.
Communities across Massachusetts are experiencing larcenies from motor vehicles believed to be conducted by the “Felony Lane Gang.” Their MO is simple. They check for unlocked and unattended cars, IDs, purses, debit cards, and checkbooks.
They’ll then try to cash or withdraw large amounts of money from these accounts.
Prevent yourself from being their next victim by…locking your cars."

Franklin Police Dept shares this important scam alert
"SCAM ALERT (picture of Frankie and Ben to grab your attention)
Special attention to early to mid-20-year-olds. Parents, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share this with your adult children
The FPD has seen an increase in a particular scam involving the Snapchat App and Instagram. Users (typically male) are being friended by random users of the apps (typically females), and strike up a conversation with the users.
After some time the scammer will engage in explicit conversation and send explicit photographs of themselves through the app. In return, they ask for explicit photographs back.
Once they have these photographs they blackmail the user into sending them money via a payment app (typically in the hundredths of dollars) or else they will send the victim's pictures to their social media friends or contact list.
The scammer WILL send these pictures out if they don’t get their money. When these incidents occur they are investigated by the FPD. It’s our goal to prevent these scams from occurring in the first place.
If you find yourself in this situation and think it might be a scam… IT’S A SCAM!"

Did you read the SAFE Coalition message on e-cigarettes?
"E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid into an aerosol that the user inhales. The liquid usually has nicotine and flavoring in it, and other additives. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is addictive. E-cigarettes are considered tobacco products because most of them contain nicotine, which comes from tobacco.Besides nicotine, e-cigarettes can contain harmful and potentially harmful ingredients, including: ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs; flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease; volatile compounds; heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead.Adolescent years are times of important brain development. Brain development begins during the growth of the fetus in the womb and continues through childhood and to about age 25. Nicotine exposure during adolescence and young adulthood can cause addiction and harm the developing brain.E-cigarettes are very popular with young people. Their use has grown dramatically in the last five years. Today, more high school students use e-cigarettes than regular cigarettes. The use of e-cigarettes is higher among high school students than adults. No matter how it’s delivered, nicotine is harmful for youth and young adults. E-cigarettes typically contain nicotine as well as other chemicals that are known to damage health. For example, users risk exposing their respiratory systems to potentially harmful chemicals in e-cigarettes. Read about these and other risks young people face if they use e-cigarettes."

Franklin Police gym makeover helps with fitness efforts
"The year was 1991. The Franklin Police Department was dedicated and with it came a state-of-the-art gym. As the years passed many components of the gym were frozen in time. More time passed and we realized that the gym equipment was probably older than most of our newer officers.
This fall the FPD started making a push in addressing a major factor in officer wellness, physical fitness. As they say, out with the old and in with the new. The gym was given a facelift and outfitted with new modern gym equipment that allows officers to have a great workout in a short time if needed.
We replaced old equipment with box jumps, new flooring, kettlebells, an assault bike, a rower, new bumper plates, and bars, with more equipment to come. In addition to the equipment, we’ve also implemented a new officer fitness policy and a new officer-run workout
program for the entire department.
A big thank you to Chief Lynch, Sgt. Bob MacQuarrie, Officer Eric Cusson, Officer Andressa Rosa, and everyone"
