Free Public Skating Event at Pirelli Veteran's Arena in July
Wednesday, February 20, 2019
On this Date: Feb 20, 2008 - Pirelli Arena dedicated
"At 8:18 p.m., all the shouting, banging and stomping at Veterans Memorial Skating Rink halted.
Young men in blue and white uniforms skating in circles and slamming pucks at their goal lined up, facing their opposition in silence. For a few brief moments, only the sound of bagpipes honoring fallen soldier Robert Ryan Pirelli could be heard.
Following Gov. Deval Patrick's approval Friday, the town renamed the arena last night at the final Panthers home game of the season in memory of Staff Sgt. Pirelli, a former Panther hockey player who was killed by enemy fire in Iraq last year."

In the News: students sent kindness letters; Hopkinton opens outdoor ice rink ; Marlboro business opens brewing coffee and beer
"A simple reading assignment turned into a one-hundred-fold act of kindness for a local group of young students.
Fifth-grade students at Oak Street Elementary School decided last fall to send words of encouragement to lawmakers who work at the Statehouse.
Each of the 100 “kindness letters” contains an inspiring quote hand-written by a student.
“In this political climate, so many adults could benefit from these messages about listening, understanding, and accepting,” said teacher Heather Adams. “The impact it had on our state representatives is much bigger than what I imagined it would be.”

"Just before sunset Thursday, Mark Rhodes helped his 10-year-old son, Neil, lace up his skates at the town’s outdoor skating rink at Carrigan Park.
“As soon as I get home from work he says, “Dad let’s go,’” Rhodes said. Word of the rink opening is spreading around town.
Neil brought a hockey stick that he got about a year ago.
“It’s really good ice and the rink is nice and big,” the fourth-grader at Hopkins school said. “You can play hockey on it.”

"J.P. and Melynda Gallagher are brewing up something special for downtown.
Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company is expected to open this summer in the former Speakers nightclub at 19 Weed St., J.P. Gallagher said on Thursday.
“We always wanted to be in Marlborough, both my wife and I were born and raised in Marlborough,” said Gallagher.
Lost Shoe will be more than a brewery. It will also be a coffee roaster and coffee shop. J.P. Gallagher has been a long time homebrewer and recently graduated from the American Brewers Guild in Vermont. His wife Melynda recently completed a coffee roasting course at the Coffee Lab International School of Coffee, also in Vermont.
The idea is to be an all-day business – Lost Shoe will open at 8 a.m. to serve coffee and the brewery will begin serving beer later in the day."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)

In the News: DelCarte playground repairs delayed, Tri-County compete for Innovator Award, ice skating academy registration open
Rain has delayed repair work on the playground at the DelCarte conservation property, town officials said.
Workers were slated to perform structural repairs to the equipment at the end of last week, but the poor weather has halted the project.
Deputy Town Administrator Jamie Hellen said, since a portion of the work involves pouring concrete, the rain led to delays. Work will likely begin when more sunny days are in the forecast.
At a recent Town Council meeting, Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said the project itself will likely take two to three days. After the concrete is poured and the playground structure is welded, the Department of Public Works will place mulch at its base.

A microgravity scale designed by students at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School received second-place honors in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Future Innovator Award competition.
Engineering Technology seniors Kevin Kohls, of Millis, Tyler Thomas, of North Attleborough, and Thomas Vagnini, of Medfield, traveled to St. Louis on April 28 to represent their classmates as finalists in the national competition.
The FIRST Future Innovator Award is open to all FIRST Robotics teams. The award recognizes students who invent a product that effectively solves a real-world, complex problem. Competitors were asked to submit a summary of the problem and an explanation of their invention. Submissions were judged based on the complexity of the problem and effectiveness of the invention in solving that problem.

In the News: Learn to skate, homeless resources challenged, Light up the Sky for Change
It was Learn to Skate Day at the Franklin arena, but it wasn't just any skate session. Members of the Boston Bruins organization and Blades, the big, brown Bruins mascot, mingled with the kids, handing out tips, high-fives and a hand after a spill.
The Bruins organization stopped by the rink as part of Hockey Weekend Across America - a set of nationwide outreach programs to get children more interested in, and dedicated to, the sport.
"Honestly, it takes me back. I remember when I was a kid, I did this in Medford. It's awesome to come out here with Blades and some of the Ice Girls," said Andrew Veneziano, the Boston Bruins youth hockey coordinator.
"It gets kids on the ice, helps build a love for the sport."

Advocates for the homeless are calling for additional resources to help people break a cycle of poverty.
“I often feel like I’m offering people a treadmill to nowhere because it’s so difficult to help get them to a better place,” said Jim Stewart, director of First Church Shelter in Cambridge.
The high cost of housing, access to regular medical care and discrimination are among the challenges the homeless face in Massachusetts.

As the last glimmers of sunset faded into night, people trickled on to Fino Field Saturday, all with the same idea in mind: honor those who've lost battles to addiction. The intent was to launch Chinese lanterns, but the windy night quashed that idea. Instead, they gathered in a circle with candles and said the name of a loved one lost to addiction.
Matt. Jimmy. Kelly. Ken. Gabe. Meghan. Rachel. Scott. Jenn. Amy...
More than 100 people attended the Missin' Matt Foundation's Light Up The Sky for Change event. After a moment of silence, event organizers were able to light off three lanterns as the crowd watched on from the Fino Field parking lot.

"I feel like I belong there"
The team originally consisted of Brianna Cummings, Madigan Smith, Alexandra Sousa, Michaela DeToma, and Holly Swinamer. Since those five girls first skated, the team has nearly quadrupled. It now has 19 girls from Franklin and area towns.
The team, based out of Franklin’s Pirelli Arena, made a mark when Holly Swinamer’s mother, Tracey, approached team coach Joanna Zehme about a competition in Danbury, Conn. – The Holiday Challenge.
"Honestly, we were so new and had such a small team, I wasn’t sure we could get enough skaters interested in traveling out of state for an overnight competition," Zehme said.

In the news - synchronized skaters
Mastering the perfect spiral and finding the balance to glide on one ice skate requires discipline, patience and grace.
But imagine pulling off all those tricks in concert with a group of other ice skaters.
That's precisely what the 11 Chickenellas, Franklin's Symmetric Ice Crystals synchronized skating team, have challenged themselves to do.
Synchronized skating beats singles because everyone supports one another, said Caleigh Smith, 11, who prides herself on her back-lunges.
"You have to help each other. It's harder because if somebody next to you falls down, you have to help pick them up or else you fall down. You have to support each other," said Smith.
