Franklin Food Pantry Honored with the Agency Partner Award at The Greater Boston Food Bank’s GBFB Awards

On June 11, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), New England’s largest hunger-relief organization, honored the individuals and organizations that demonstrated extraordinary leadership in 2025 in support of its anti-hunger mission at its GBFB Awards event. Awardees represent those who partnered with GBFB through food donations, volunteerism, advocacy, philanthropic support and agency partnerships, helping ensure families and individuals across Eastern Massachusetts have access to nutritious food.

As part of this year’s celebration, GBFB honored the Franklin Food Pantry with the Agency Partner of the Year Award, which recognizes an emergency feeding program that has gone above and beyond in fulfilling GBFB’s mission. The Franklin Food Pantry serves more than 1,200 individuals each month and distributed 495,000 pounds of food through its partnership with GBFB in 2025, playing a critical role in expanding access to food in the region.

The organization stands out for its focus on providing nutritious, balanced food and a client-centered experience. Recognized in 2025 as a Healthy Pantry Leader, the designation reflects Franklin’s commitment to increasing access to nutritious foods through intentional sourcing, distribution, and programming. The pantry offers a wide variety of produce, dry goods, meat, and dairy with a focus on nutritious options, and operates a market-style distribution model designed to provide a dignified and accessible experience for clients. During the summer months, the pantry also partners with local gardeners to provide additional fresh produce to the community.

“We are deeply honored to be named the Greater Boston Food Bank’s Agency Partner of the Year,” said Amber Baur, Chair of the Franklin Food Pantry Board of Directors. “Food insecurity is at an all-time high and continues to rise. The Greater Boston Food Bank’s leadership and ongoing engagement help make our daily work of meeting the need for food assistance in the Franklin community possible, and we are incredibly grateful for their partnership.”

Food insecurity remains an urgent and widespread challenge in Massachusetts. GBFB’s sixth annual Massachusetts Food Access Report, released in April 2026 in collaboration with Mass General Brigham, revealed that a record 40 percent of Massachusetts households experienced food insecurity in 2025, increasing from 37 percent in 2024 and doubling since 2019.

“The Franklin Food Pantry is a trusted resource for so many families, and its impact is felt every day in the community it serves,” said GBFB President and CEO Catherine D’Amato. “At a time when more households across Massachusetts are facing impossible tradeoffs to afford basic needs, partners like Franklin Food Pantry are helping us keep pace with rising demand and ensure consistent access to nutritious food in their community. This pantry is a model for responsive, community-driven hunger-relief, and we are honored to recognize their leadership this year.”

Originally established in 2003 as the Partner Appreciation Awards, this year’s GBFB Awards highlighted seven individuals and organizations chosen from GBFB’s network of volunteers, public officials, donors, food distribution partners and advocates who have shown dedication to mitigating the food insecurity crisis and providing wide-ranging contributions to support hunger relief efforts in Eastern Massachusetts.

GBFB also recognized Garelick Farms as Food Donor of the Year after donating more than 380,000 pounds of nutritious dairy products in 2025. Takeda was named Corporate Partner of the Year for contributing nearly $6.5 million and volunteering more than 800 hours over a two-decade partnership. Attorney General Andrea Campbell was honored as Advocate of the Year for leading a coalition of 26 states in a landmark lawsuit against the USDA and mounting a decisive legal defense of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the fall government shutdown.

Franklin Police Department conduct annual awards ceremony

"Today (5/10/26) we gathered together — patrol officers, supervisors, command staff, retirees, families, and friends — to honor the officers who stood out this year during our annual award ceremony.

As officers, accepting awards is never easy. Many of the calls we respond to are during the worst moments of someone’s life. We do not do this job for recognition; most of us simply feel like we are doing the job we took an oath to do.

What is important, however, is recognizing the families who stand beside us through the hard days, sad days, quiet days, and the “I don’t want to talk about it” days. Our families carry this job with us, often without ever seeing firsthand why those days happen. Ceremonies like today give them the opportunity to understand why so many call these officers heroes, even when they don’t see themselves that way.

It was our honor to recognize the following members today:

Life Saving Award:

  • Officer David Gove and Officer Joseph Burchill

Honorable Service Award:

  • Sergeant John Godino

Leadership Award:

  • Lieutenant Michael Colecchi

Exceptional Duty Award:

  • Officers Eric Cusson, Nicholas Storelli, David Ricci, Robert Burchill and Timothy Trubiano

Letters of Merit:

  • Sergeant Louis Marguerite and Kalman Koblick Detective Tara Lagoa
  • Officers Eric Cusson, Jovan Bielski, Andrew Viall, Nicholas Storelli, Robert Young, Derek Mackey, Conor Desmond, Kevin Quinn, Timothy Trubiano, Victoria McVicar, Robert Burchill, Jonathan Butler, Kevin Quinn, David Ricci, Jonathan Giron and Richard Martini
  • Clinician Kallie Montagano

Congratulations to all of today’s recipients, and thank you to every member of the Franklin Police Department and their families for your sacrifice, professionalism, and dedication to this community every single day."

Girl Scout Abigail Drake Earns the Highest Achievement in Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) is proud to announce that Franklin Girl Scout Abigail Drake earned the highest award in Girl Scouting: the Girl Scout Gold Award. Abigail was one of 47 Gold Award Girl Scouts honored from eastern Massachusetts at a ceremony on Sunday, May 18, at historic Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham, MA.

(L-R) GSEMA Board Chair & President Deb Taft, Abigail. GSEMA CEO Monica Roberts
(L-R) GSEMA Board Chair & President Deb Taft,
Abigail. GSEMA CEO Monica Roberts
Abigail earned the Gold Award for implementing Textile Sustainability in Franklin, which reduced waste and promoted textile recycling. Abigail was inspired by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s initiative to significantly reduce the state’s solid waste disposal, particularly by encouraging residents to recycle, donate, and reuse textiles that otherwise would have been disposed of illegally or unethically. Abigail sought to support her state’s efforts by informing members of her community about the initiative.

Abigail held presentations and handed out flyers in areas where people were commonly known to dispose of textiles. Additionally, she arranged for several clothing drives where Abigail spread awareness and collected unneeded items for recycling and donation to those in need. This work will be sustained beyond Abigail’s involvement through her school’s environmental club, which will continue to hold presentations, information booths, and clothing drives.

Abigail reflected, “I was often told, across the duration of my project, that I was making a difference and that the things I was doing mattered to the people I had spoken to because they knew so little about the things I was talking about before the events I held.”

With a minimum of 80 service hours spent per project, this year’s class of 2025 Gold Award Girl Scouts has dedicated roughly 4,000 hours to making positive change by addressing real-world problems, including mental health, environmental sustainability, social justice, food insecurity, and the arts.

The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes Girl Scouts in grades 9-12 who develop resourcefulness, tenacity, and decision-making skills, giving them a personal and professional edge. As they take action to transform their communities, Gold Award Girl Scouts acquire tangible skills and demonstrate that they’re the leaders our world needs. Gold Award Girl Scouts become innovative problem-solvers, empathetic leaders, confident public speakers, and focused project managers.

According to recent research, Gold Award Girl Scouts are more likely to fill leadership roles at work and in their personal lives and are more civically engaged than their non-Girl Scout peers. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of Gold Award Girl Scouts agree that earning their Gold Award gave them skills that help them succeed professionally. Seventy-two percent (72%) said earning their Gold Award helped them secure a scholarship. Changing the world doesn’t end when Girl Scouts earn their Gold Award. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of Gold Award Girl Scout alums take on leadership roles in their everyday lives.

For more information on Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, visit www.gsema.org or follow them on social @girlscoutsemass (InstagramFacebook, and LinkedIn) to see what Girl Scouts are up to in our 178 eastern Massachusetts communities.

    • 29 of the 54 possible students for the DT exemption committed to do so, Staff placement being worked, All dependent upon the budget

2024 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Awards recognize MacCallum, Consigli, Grasso, & Flynn

2024 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Awards recognize the following Franklin High School athletes:

Norah MacCallum – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior defender Norah MacCallum was the leader of the back line all season for the Panthers, helping them secure a 14th straight league title and extend the program’s Hockomock League win streak to 122 games (dating back to the 2012 season). MacCallum finished the season with 21 ground balls and caused 30 turnovers. The Panthers were second in the Hock, allowing just 159 goals in 22 games (a little over seven per game) despite playing some of the best teams in the state. MacCallum was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Norah was the backbone and leader of our defense. She played a key role in our zone this year and really excelled at getting us the ball back.”

Gabi Consigli – Franklin – Attack/Midfield
Franklin junior attacker Gabi Consigli made a big leap this spring and became one of the most consistent attacking threats for the Panthers, helping them bring home a 14th consecutive league title and extend a decade-long league win streak to 122 games. Consigli was one of the team leaders in goals (30), assists (24), and total points (54), as Franklin revamped its attacking unit with several new faces this spring and, despite facing tough competition all season, averaged nearly 10 goals per game. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Gabi was a solid attacker for us this year. She made big strides from her sophomore year to this year, and did a nice job setting up her teammates.”

Maeve Grasso – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior defender Maeve Grasso put in a solid season in the heart of the back line, a crucial part of the Panthers clinching a 14th straight league title and extending their decade-long league win streak to 122 games. Grasso had 16 ground balls and caused seven turnovers this season for the Panthers, who allowed a little more than seven goals per game despite a difficult non-league schedule. The Panthers allowed 159 goals in 22 games, which was second-fewest in the Hock. Grasso was an honorable mention for league all-star. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “I was excited to see Maeve on this list because our defense was really our strong point this year. Maeve might not have a ton of stats, but without her intelligence, communication, and leadership, our defense would not have worked.”

Julia Flynn – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin junior Julia Flynn excelled in a much larger role in the Panthers midfield this season, showing off an all-around game that was crucial to Franklin winning a 14th consecutive league title and extending its remarkable league win streak to 122 games. Flynn filled up the stat sheet this season. She scored 37 goals and dished out 13 assists, scooped up 28 ground balls, forced 15 turnovers, and collected 92 draw controls. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Julia had a breakout year as a midfielder. We asked her to do more roles than ever before, and she delivered. She is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever coached and I am looking forward to seeing what she can do next season.”
