Get Ready to Ride in the Franklin PMC Kids Ride - Jun 16

The 13th annual Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be held on Sunday, June 16, from 8 AM to 12 PM. The Franklin ride is one of more than 35 PMC Kids Rides throughout the New England area. Last year, the Franklin ride attracted more than 230 young cyclists between the ages of 3 and 14, who rode between 3 and 10 miles. The ride raised more than $58,000, exceeding their goal for cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Altogether, the PMC Kids Rides program has raised more than $9 million since their first ride in 1998. This year's goal is $60,000.

This ride is a unique event that motivates kids to learn about the importance of giving back, introduces them volunteerism and fundraising, and offers a way for children to become part of the PMC mission in a safe and athletic way. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These donations benefit research, treatment, and care for children and families impacted by cancer.

The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will will start and end at the Jefferson School, located at 628 Washington Street in Franklin. Kids can select from a 3, 6, or 10-mile course. They will also enjoy an after-ride celebration with music, games, food, and more. Younger participants, not yet on two wheels, can partake in the Tikes and Trikes course in a contained area at the school. This area has several fun stations and activities for the little ones, including a car wash, gas station, snack stand, craft table, face painting, and more. There is a $10 registration fee and a $30 fundraising minimum for all riders.

Indoor Cycling Fundraiser - Apr 28

What: A three hour cycling fundraiser for the Pan Mass Challenge with New England Patriots Captain Matthew Slater. Matthew will be signing autographs and taking pictures with all riders. 100% of all monies raised will go directly to the Pan Mass Challenge/Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The event will be led by six fun and talented instructors!

Where: The Adirondack Club, 800 Chestnut St, Franklin, MA 02038

When: Sunday, April 28th from 1:00pm-4:00pm

How to Register: Registration should be done in person at the front desk of the Adirondack Club. Riders can register for a one, two or three hour ride. Non members are welcome!

Donation: It costs $100.00 for one hour, $200.00 for two hours, or $300.00 for three hours. Once you are registered, please follow the information below to make your donation. Donations must be made within 24 hours of registration and be received prior to the event. There will be prizes for the biggest fundraisers.

How to Pay: Payment can be done online by following the directions below:

2. Click on red Donate icon on right top of page.
3. Under “Enter a Rider’s name or EgiftID below”, enter “Team Phil’s Phriends”
4. Click on “Find a Rider”.
5. Click on “Team Phil’s Phriends, Needham, MA”
6. Enter donation amount

If you would prefer to pay by check, please make checks payable to the PMC/Phil’s Phriends and mail them to Carolyn Bohmiller, 205 Jordan Rd, Franklin, MA 02038.

If you have friends or family who would like to donate before or after the event, please provide them the instructions above to donate online, mail their checks to the above address, or bring their checks made out to the PMC/Phil’s Phriends with you on the day of the ride. If they are donating online, have them mention the rider’s name in the comment section.

Remember to bring some cash with you to try to win some great raffle items! The raffle will be open on Saturday, April 27 from 7:00-11:00 AM and again on Sunday, April 28 from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Food and drinks will be available for all riders.

"Before hundreds of cyclists rolled into the Jefferson Elementary School, Kevin Lydon held back tears. 

Lydon was a volunteer at Saturday’s water stop for cyclists participating in the annual Pan-Mass Challenge to raise money for cancer treatment and research. 

Lydon, a Mansfield resident, choked up when he said his cancer returned last month. He had been in remission before a surgical oncologist told him his lymphoma is back. The diagnosis has not been confirmed, although test results are expected this week."

"A resident is on a crusade to repeal the town’s plastic bag regulation, and he’s meeting with town officials to state his case. 

Brent Longtin called it “a disaster,” and he wants officials to encourage residents to focus on re-usable bags. 

Natick’s policy allows plastic bags with a minimum thickness of 2 millimeters. Retailers can also provide bags made of recycled paper or reusable bags made of cloth or other washable fabric."

Franklin also is a rest stop for riders on the route from Sturbridge to Provincetown. If you have a chance to get to the Remington Jefferson School complex on Saturday morning, Aug 4, the early riders usually start coming in about 7 AM and then the peak is usually between 8 and 10. It is quite an experience!

In the News: Councilor Jones delayed in Haiti; Brightman cutting wood to fund raise for cancer

"Franklin Town Councilor Glenn Jones was stranded in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti Sunday, where protests escalated over the weekend after a government-backed spike in fuel prices. 

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti issued an advisory urging American travelers there to shelter in place and not to travel to the airport unless they had a scheduled flight. Jones, an electrician, is there working as a volunteer on a building project at a girls orphanage in Leogane, Haiti, where he has volunteered previously through his church. He began the work on Thursday. He and his daughter, Jillian, 17, were in Haiti in April on a similar mission at the same facility. 

Sunday’s advisory followed a slew of demonstration alerts issued by the U.S. State Department in recent days as unrest over fuel prices escalated."

"Cancer seems to strike a chord with everyone. But harmony is found with a much different cord in Tim Brightman’s backyard. 

For $150, people from Franklin and surrounding communities can have a quarter cord of wood trucked over to their house by Brightman. All proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund through Brightman’s Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) fundraising efforts. 

“If you order a quarter cord of wood to be delivered to your house, you’re going to pay the same price with me as you would with anyone else,” Brightman said. “But all of my money goes to charity. So take your wood and make a donation.” 

Brightman has been raising money for the PMC for 30 years, about half of his life. He starting raising money for cancer soon after his brother, Steve, died at age 36 after a battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma early in life, before a deadly encounter with melanoma later on."

Are you looking for a fun event to do with your children while coming together as a community to help fight cancer? Come join Franklin's 12th annual PMC Kids Ride being held on Sunday, June 10. The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be one of more than 35 PMC Kids Rides throughout the New England area. 

Last year, the Franklin ride attracted over 250 young cyclists between the ages of 3 and 14, who rode between 3 and 10 miles. The ride exceeded their fundraising goal and raised more than $55,000 for cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The ride offers a way for children to become part of the PMC mission by involving them in volunteerism and fundraising in a safe and athletic way.

The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be held on Sunday, June 10 from 8 AM to 12 PM, and will start and end at the Remington/Jefferson School, 628 Washington Street in Franklin. Kids can select from a 3, 6 or 10-mile course. Younger participants not yet on 2 wheels can take part in the Tikes and Trikes course in a contained area at the school.

In the News: beavers at DelCarte, PMC rides through Franklin

"Local officials are weighing what to do with a colony of beavers whose natural handiwork threatens an earthen berm at DelCarte Reservation off Pleasant Street. 

An expert from ESS Group, an environmental engineering firm, walked around the ponds and other parts of the reservation on April 7 looking for signs of beaver busywork. After discovering that the critters were indeed making themselves at home, ESS installed a motion-activated camera for 13 days. 

Four beaver lodges were found along the shoreline, two of which appear to be in use. One dam in the area is blocking water flow from the upper basin to the southern basin. The dam is flooding trees near a berm on the upper basin, or pond, according to an ESS study. That could be a problem if the berm continues to flood."

"Thousands of bike tires will meet with hundreds of miles of pavement across Massachusetts during the 38th annual Pan Mass Challenge this weekend. 

The ride starts tomorrow and continues until Sunday – Over 6,000 cyclists from eight different countries gathered in Massachusetts for the bike race this year. The ride will begin on 5:30 a.m on Saturday and on Sunday and go until 7 p.m. 

The Pan Mass Challenge, or PMC, is a fundraiser for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. To date, PMC has raised almost $550 million for early-cancer research. The PMC raises more money than any other athletic fundraiser in the country. 

There will be water stops for cyclists in Franklin, Wrentham, Foxbourough, Whitinsville, and Wellesley. The stops are known to cause car traffic, as hundreds on cyclists will be making their way down dozens of the area roads.

The water stop in Franklin is at the Remington-Jefferson School complex. It is worth an early trip there to see the riders come through. Some of the early riders will get there about 7:30 AM and the bulk of the pack arrives between 8 and 10 AM according to my recall of prior visits.
