Talking with Rich Frongillo about Downtown Preschool (opening 2023), economic development, soccer, etc. (audio)

FM #927 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 927 in the series.

This session shares my conversation with Rich Frongillo. Rich is the owner of Tinetrix, founder of the Franklin Soccer School, Inc., Downtown Sports, and the forthcoming Downtown Preschool (new in 2023!). Our conversation was recorded in the Franklin TV & Radio studios on Tuesday, Dec 20, 2022.

Rich and I had another winding conversation. We start with the World Cup, talk soccer, and then catch up on business in this ‘new normal’ time. We get into economic development, housing, and other topics catching up from our prior conversation recorded in September 2020.

Downtown Preschool is the most recent small business venture and it is scheduled to open this year.

Our conversation runs 67 mins. Let’s listen to Rich and I talk about small business life here in Franklin. Audio file -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-927-rich-frongillo-downtown-sports-expanding-12-20-23

Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams top Milford on Friday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, January 27, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Milford, 46 @ Franklin, 66 – Final
– Franklin played well on both sides of the ball, pouring in 36 points in the first half while limiting the visitors to just 16, and the Panthers never looked back from there. After taking a 15-6 lead through one quarter of action, Franklin really extended its advantage with 21 points in the second quarter. Andrew O’Neill had half of his 10 points in the second, Caden Sullivan added a triple, and Sean O’Leary had seven of his team-high 17 points in the game to build a 36-16 halftime lead. Geino Scaringello had two threes and finished with 10 points for Franklin, which had 11 players register points. Sophomore Andrew Rivera (five rebounds) and freshman CJ Farrell (eight rebounds) paced the Hawks with 16 points apiece.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 57 @ Milford, 28 – Final
– Franklin locked down on defense, holding Milford to just 10 points in the first half, and exploded for 28 second quarter points to pick up a seventh straight win, clinch a playoff berth, and hold onto its one-game lead in the division. Leading 9-4 after one, Franklin found another gear in the second. Katie Peterson had a dozen, Chloe Fales added eight, and Caelyn Leonard scored six in the second quarter. Fales (trio of three-pointers) and Peterson each finished with 16 points and Leonard had eight. Milford scored 14 in the third, cutting two points off the lead. Brooke Ferreira had five of her six points in the frame and Emily Croteau (six points) knocked down one of her two threes in the quarter. TJ Downing had four for the Hawks.

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 0 vs. Catholic Memorial, 3 – Final

FHS girls hockey team tops KP 2-1 on Thursday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, January 26, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Girls Hockey = King Philip, 1 @ Franklin, 2 – Final

Josh Perry,  Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap
"When the two teams met way back in the second week of the season, King Philip pulled out a one-goal victory that gave the Warriors momentum at the start of the league campaign. As the final horn sounded on Thursday night’s game at Pirelli Veterans Arena, the Franklin players raced together to celebrate, and the cheering lasted long after the Panthers made their way back to the locker room.

After taking a two goal lead through two periods, Franklin was outshot 11-2 in the third and went on the penalty kill twice, but managed to hold off KP’s charge and pull out a 2-1 victory. Franklin’s adds a new dimension to the league standings, as the Panthers face co-leader Canton on Saturday and, with the Warriors and Bulldogs due to face-off next week, have the chance to insert themselves right back in the title mix.

“We’ve had a lot of battles this year,” said first-year Franklin coach Mike Lubin. “Today, we wanted to take those close games, those close ties, close losses, and turn them into wins. We stayed composed. We stuck to our game plan and that’s what I’m proud of them for, the effort, everything from start to finish.”

Crazy for Composting!

Keller Hawks and Sullivan Huskies

Big impact can start with a small change. At the Helen Keller/ Annie Sullivan complex, students have adopted a composting program! A change in their lunch time routine encourages students to sort their discarded food scraps and containers into designated bins to be composted. This collaboration with the Town of Franklin Department of Public Works aims to reduce the amount of waste, while creating opportunities for connected learning and community building. Following such a successful pilot, we aim to expand the program to more schools in the district!

The program was highlighted on NBC10 Boston's Climate 2022 Report, be sure to check out the segment if you missed it!

Mr. Walsh's AP Government class had the opportunity to chat over zoom with White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Franklin High School Alumni Jennifer O'Malley Dillon! Students heard first hand about the many responsibilities for the Deputy Chief of Staff and how O'Mally Dillon's career path brought her to this role. The Franklin High School Pantherbook news club covered the story. Read all about it as told from an FHS student here.

Panther Pride Night

Calling all 8th grade students and families! Looking to learn more about what it means to be a Franklin High School Panther? You're in luck! Franklin High School will host its annual Panther Pride Night on Thursday, February 2nd from 6PM-7:30 PM!

We invite you to come visit the school to learn about all of the fantastic extracurricular, athletic, and academic opportunities available to our prospective students.

Superintendent Entry Plan Update

Building Based Listen & Learn

As part of the Superintendent Entry Plan, Mr. Giguere has been holding listening sessions throughout the district to connect directly with various faculty, staff and advisory group.

These building based meetings allow Mr. Giguere the ability to engage with each group to learn more about their experiences and provide greater insight into the district's strengths and opportunities for growth.

Mr. Giguere continues to learn and grow in his new role through this process along with attending The New Superintendent Induction Program (NSIP).

"My goal is to understand further the strengths/positives and the challenges/areas of improvement so that I can make recommendations and share my findings with the community at a later date." - Mr. Giguere

Redistricting Analysis Update

The Redistricting Advisory Committee has continued meeting to preview, refine and prepare draft scenarios to be presented to the Franklin Public School Community in March.

Keep an eye out for community forums dates and other opportunities to provide feedback on the draft scenarios produced from the redistricting analysis process.

Once the School Committee votes on a scenario, boundary adjustment or other recommendation, next steps will be outlined with the community.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee has established guiding principles to outline the considerations during the redistricting analysis process. You may review the guiding principles here.

To better outline the redistricting analysis process, we have created a webpage to update the community on our efforts. Learn more via our Redistricting Analysis page.
