Wine Illustration Talk With Maryse Chevriere
Wine Illustration Talk With Maryse Chevriere

Maryse shares the fascinating, and "very very reluctant," story of her journey into the world of wine.

Listeners will get an inside look at how the wine scenes differ between New York, San Francisco, and Boston.

The discussion delves into her unique illustrations, which earned her the 2016 James Beard Award for Humor. Dubbing herself the "drunk doodler," Maryse explains how she finds inspiration to create her whimsical and insightful wine tasting note illustrations, which have been featured in publications like Food & Wine and Bon Appetit.

The episode also uncorks her book, Grasping the Grape, covering practical topics like wine shopping, the aging potential of rosΓ©, and deciphering wine labels. Maryse provides her expert tips on finding the perfect bottle and offers information on wine importers.

Get ready for a sneak peek as she teases details about her upcoming new book. Finally, the show concludes with a thought-provoking comparison of her hand-drawn tasting note illustrations to those generated by artificial intelligence.

The Wonderful World of Wine (WWW): Episode 297 - Talking Wine And Restaurants With Jen Ziskin

Hosts Kim Simone and Mark Lenzi explore all things wine with you!

Join Kim and Mark from www.thewww.wine for an engaging interview with Jen Ziskin, the dynamic Executive Director for Massachusetts Restaurants United (MRU) and co-owner/wine director of Brookline, MA's beloved restaurants, La Morra and Punch Bowl.

Jen shares her extensive background in the wine and restaurant industry, leading into a discussion on the genesis of Massachusetts Restaurants United. She elaborates on how MRU actively supports Massachusetts restaurants, particularly through valuable liquor and wine education initiatives.

The conversation then delves into the evolving landscape of Massachusetts laws concerning restaurants and liquor licenses, providing insights into the challenges and opportunities these changes present. Jen takes us on a journey through her personal wine travels and education, explaining how these experiences profoundly influence her wine list curation and selections at La Morra and Punch Bowl, highlighting her preference for smaller, artisanal producers over big brands.

Shifting gears, the interview covers practical aspects of wine consumption, specifically the rules surrounding "wine doggy bags" and the nuances of BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) laws in Massachusetts.

The promotion of wine within restaurants is then explored, with Jen offering her perspective on how to effectively introduce and sell wines she personally enjoys to her customers. For aspiring wine list buyers, Jen provides invaluable tips and insights. She also touches upon the practicality and appeal of 1/2 and magnum wine bottles, the strategy behind wine by the glass offerings, the proper handling of corked wines, and essential etiquette for wine sampling.

ReThinking: Jacinda Ardern on leading with empathy and overcoming self-doubt (video)

ReThinking: Jacinda Ardern on leading with empathy and overcoming self-doubt (video)
Re:Thinking with Adam Grant
"When Jacinda Ardern was thrown into the race for New Zealand’s prime ministry just months before the general election in 2017, she had no intention of even running for the position—but she knew it was her responsibility to become the leader her country needed.

In this episode, Adam and Jacinda reflect on strategies for closing confidence gaps, discuss the importance of compassion in leadership, and break down a phenomenon that New Zealanders call “tall poppy syndrome.”

They also look back on Jacinda’s most pivotal decisions, from steering the country through the COVID pandemic to stepping down as Prime Minister."

How money has corrupted American values and institutions (video)

Scott Galloway in conversation on the Trevor Noah "What Now?" podcast:
"And I think where we came off the tracks is this idolatry of money. When I was a kid, my dad's boss had a slightly bigger house, but we all went to the same country club. We all went to the same school. Money buys you everything from better health care to better schools to a much broader selection set of mates. So we have become obsessed, understandably, with money.

The idolatry of the dollar and these tech innovators has gone berserk. And so the pursuit of the dollar, in my opinion, has crowded out almost all traditional character.
Look what money has done to us. Look what it's done.  If you had a friend who was making Nazi salutes, a parent teacher conferences, and was being sued by two women for sole custody, their kids, and you had heard from credible sources that they were addicted to ketamine, wouldn't you move in and say, hey, boss, something's wrong here.

But not if you're rich, not if you can put a rocket into space or make a shit ton of money with EVs. Money has perverted us. It is crowded out all sense of character, of decency, of what it means to be a real man.

We have decided that you can get away with anything as long as you're rich. It's been a total, in my opinion, a lack of a moral failing.

ZBA listens, Town Administrator attempts to clarify points, on the 444 East Central project (video)

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) met as scheduled Thursday night, May 8, 2025. The 444 East Central portion of the meeting begins at 19 minutes into the recording and such is set for the replay here. (You can easily go to the beginning of the video and view the earlier portion if you choose.)

The ZBA page for this 444 East Central project is here -> https://www.franklinma.gov/815/2025-Current-Recent-ZBA-Hearings

Meeting items of note
  • Halligan recused himself
  • project overview briefly recapped (slides captured below)
  • a clerical problem with notice resulted in an agreement between the applicant attorney and the committee, committee not to invoke safe harbor, appplicant not to invoke a constructive grant. The constructive grant would have allowed the applicant to bypass most of the ZBA process
  • The application will continue and take some number of months to do so. The next meeting is targeted for June 5, the next after that is July 17
  • Due to this negotiation, the peer review process did not start. Traffic will be first up at the next meeting
  • Town Administrator Jamie Hellen participating this time, and he explains why, he is participating to explain details around the process and clarify, everybody can hear the record as one
  • One sore point (lack of communication from the ZBA Chair and other members after multiple email queries), it was revealed that responding to individual emails is a non-no during the time that the subject is before the Board. It could potentially violate open meeting law. All discussions, responses to questions, need to be in the open meeting.

Slides of the presentation ->  https://photos.app.goo.gl/x5N6EvhwDRUtcRps5

The waivers requested by the project are outlined in Section 8 and contained in this PDF (separated from the full project doc) -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/11lkqa0Hz1VCO_J3utf-5NynwlnPeVPQj/view?usp=drive_link

Board of Health designates agent for Tobacco control & appoints alternate for Metacomet Health (audio)

FM #1372 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1372 the series.

This session of the radio show shares the Town of Franklin Board of Health Meeting held on Wednesday, February 5, 2024. The meeting agenda listed it being conducted via Google meet. However, the 2 members of the Board (Harris, Mu-Chow) (1 absent - Sweet) and Health Dept members apparently were present together.

Quick Recap:

  • Discussion on designation of Mass Health Office Association (MHOA) as the tobacco control agent for the town. Motion approved by 2-0 vote via roll call

  • Discussion on the new MEtacomet Advisory Board oversight board and need to appoint an alternate contact in addition to Director Liberty. Motion made to appoint Kerry McKay as advisory board alternate board member and approved 2-0

  • Healthy brains program for 2025. Kick off with a podcast to be scheduled. Increase awareness, provide resources, in advance of the onset of dementia and other brain afflictions. Focus initially at the Senior Center, Housing Authority, & Library. SAFE Coalition is close to getting their ‘mega brain’ display which can be walked through. Simulation dementia experience via hospital. Training possible for wait staff to assist with making that restaurant ordering process a less stressful experience

  • Health agent report, monthly training completed

  • COVID tests still available via the Health nurse at Senior Center, call to arrange pickup. Flu season; 80% of the cases occurred during January (folks actually getting tested, so still likely an undercount)

  • Steve chimed in that he had a contact for the brain program will send info to Cathleen. Also the agenda doc link for the meeting was not clickable, it could be copied but wasn’t clickable

Motion to adjourn, second, passes 2-0-1 (1 absent)

The meeting runs about 26 minutes. Let’s listen to the Board of Health meeting Feb 5, 2025. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1372-franklin-ma-board-of-health-mtg-02-05-25/
