"District officials said the schools' summer programs made the grade this past season, citing record attendance at the High School Experience and offerings in the math, science, art and music departments. 

Discussing the programs with the School Committee, Pandora Carlucci, director of the district's Lifelong Learning department, said the schools offered about 13 different programs, providing dozens of courses and multiple initiatives. 

Carlucci said a forensic science class - in which such topics as fingerprints and blood spatter analysis were explored - has been a perennial favorite. 

She said there were classes for both high school and middle school students, and noted that it was a good opportunity for the younger children to see what was possible at the high school."

*** Boys Soccer = King Philip, 4 @ Franklin, 0 – Final

– King Philip cashed in the first five minutes as junior Tyler Mann put the Warriors up in the fifth minute on an assist from Zac White. Colby Koch doubled KP’s lead in the 20th minute, on an assist from Jack Bush and then tripled the lead, converting a penalty kick that he earned just before halftime. Sophomore Tony Bozza added a fourth goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Koch.

*** Girls Soccer = Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 1 – Final

– Miranda Smith, Halle Atkinson, and Molly Duncan (from the penalty spot) scored the goals for the Panthers. Lauren DeStefano had an assist in the win.

*** Field Hockey = Franklin, 2 @ Canton, 3 – Final

– Canton twice erased a one goal deficit and then took its first lead, Emily Campbell scoring the game-winner on a penalty stroke with six minutes to play. Franklin went up 1-0 on an unassisted goal from Annie Walsh and then 2-1 when Walsh scored again on a pass from Caroline Lounsbury.

*** Golf = Mansfield, 172 @ Franklin, 169 – Final

– Franklin’s Matt D’Errico shot a team-low round of 41 while Bryan Woelfel added a 42 and both Connor Norton and Matt Dao shot 43 to help the Panthers edge Mansfield. Brendan Loomer was the match medalist, shooting a low round of 38 for the Hornets while Jason Hindman carded a 41.

Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) presents Fiddler on the Roof

Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) proudly presents the musical theater masterpiece Fiddler on the Roof. The beloved classic opens FPAC’s 26th season. Performances are October 15 at 7:30 p.m., October 16 at 2:00, October 21 and 22 at 7:30, and October 23 at 2:00. The production will be staged at THE BLACK BOX, FPAC’s home and performance venue, located at 15 West Central Street in downtown Franklin.

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, the iconic musical is the brainchild of Broadway legends Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince, songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and book writer Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, Fiddler on the Roof is a staple of the musical theatre canon. Set in the small village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and hold onto traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Tzarist Russia. Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition has won the hearts of audiences with its celebration of life and family. The musical features the cherished songs “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Miracle of Miracles,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Tradition,” and “Matchmaker.”

Leading the cast are Nick Paone (Tevye) of Franklin and Kellie Stamp (Golde) of Westport. The production also features Jason Barney (Motel), Greg Dutton (Lazar Wolf), Aaron Frongillo (Perchik), Anna Grasso (Bielke), Shauna Martin (Yente), Debra Packard (Grandma Tzeitel), and Katharine Waples (Tzeitel) of Franklin; Colie Vancura (Hodel) of Medfield; Katie Gray (Fruma Sarah) of Milford; Griffin Wilkins (Fyedka) of Walpole; and Jenna McDermott (Chava) and Susauna Wickstrom (Shprintze) of Wrentham. Nick Paone directs FPAC’s production, assisted by Raye Lynn Mercer, with musical direction by Hallie Wetzell and choreography by Mercer and Kellie Stamp.

Dacey Dog Park: Clean up has been cancelled for Saturday, Oct 1

Due to the rain the clean up scheduled for Saturday, October, 1 at Franklin Dog Park has been cancelled. 

New date will be Saturday, October 15 at 8am. 

We need at least 4 wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes. Water, coffee, apple cider and donuts will be there for the people who help out.

“What Does It Mean to be Native?” - Oct 4

The Tuesday, October 4 meeting of the Franklin Garden Club will feature a presentation on “What Does It Mean to be Native?” by Doug Williams, the Director of Mass Audubon’s Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Norfolk, MA. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Franklin Senior Center at 26 Daniel McCahill Street. It is open to the public and those interested in joining the Garden Club. 

Williams will focus on the benefits of using native plants in landscapes, including their adaptability and variations in size, texture, and seasonal colors. He will highlight the strengths of native plants, as well as some common misbeliefs regarding these plants. One of the strengths of using native plants is that they support native pollinators, which are decreasing in number. The use of native plants in gardens and landscapes helps to conserve species important to the ecosystem. 

Williams has more than 35 years’ experience as a botanist and ecologist working with rare plants and habitats in Massachusetts and Texas. He holds a master's degree in conservation biology from Antioch University – New Hampshire where he wrote his master’s thesis on the old-growth forest of Wachusett Mountain State Reservation. He has led natural history field trips to such diverse places as Big Bend National Park, the upper Texas Coast and Alaska. 

The Franklin Garden Club was founded in 1987 and became a member of The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. in 2015.

State Representative Jeffrey N. Roy Scores High in ELM Action Fund Environmental Legislative Scorecard

The Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund (ELM Action Fund) is pleased to recognize Representative Roy, who achieved an excellent score in the organization's 2015-2016 Legislative Scorecard on the environment. It rates true legislative action, not merely votes. And it challenges AIM's recent scorecard criticizing legislators on energy policy as lost in the 19th century and failing to represent the long term interests of their own members.

"When it came to votes this session, Representative Roy supported our pro-environment agenda, but didn't stop there. Representative Roy demonstrated his commitment to conservation. The ELM Action Fund is pleased to recognize him as an environmental champion," said ELM Action Fund President George Bachrach. "We look forward to continued work together to protect our environment, improve public health, enhance quality of life, and grow our green economy."

"I was honored to be recognized by the Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund for my record in protecting the environment," said Rep. Roy (D–Franklin). "Laws and policies that protect our natural resources and foster clean energy sources have been a priority throughout my time in the House. These policies not only protect our planet, but they contribute to economic development, improve health, and offer recreational opportunities."

Beyond votes, the ELM Action Fund awarded additional points to lawmakers who led by sponsoring important legislation or authored "Dear Colleague" letters, and deducted points from legislators who filed anti-environment legislation. The ELM Action Fund also challenges lawmakers for the practice of "voice votes" on controversial issues which are not recorded roll call votes. This practice prevents voters from truly gauging which representatives and senators are truly on their side.

"Legislative scorecards are common but this is unique, measuring leadership, not just votes," said Bachrach. "This is our best effort to give voters a sense of who is really on their side in the critically important work that takes place out of public view."

In the News: Parents forum scheduled; Destination Imagination info night

"The Franklin Public Schools will be hosting a talk in mid-October to help parents understand and communicate with their adolescent children. 

The event - scheduled for Monday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium - will feature mental health counselor Jon Mattleman. 

Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said the idea to bring Mattleman to town came about last year. 

"Some Franklin parents went to see him talk in Natick, and they felt it was really good," she said.

KP comes back to top FHS volleyball 3-2

Jaron May, HockomockSports.com Student Reporter, provides the details on the come from behind win by KP over FHS in volleyball.

"Despite dropping the first two sets, King Philip battled back and to win the next three to clinch the game and add another tally to the win column. 

The Panthers pounced on the Warriors early on. In the first set, Franklin went on run after run, only being stopped periodically by KP for a point or two. In the blink of an eye, the Panthers got out to a quick 3-0 start and never looked back. 

Franklin extended their lead to 13-6 in the next few points, thanks to some great serving by Riley Marino and Erin Skidmore. KP pulled to within three at the 15-12 mark, but Franklin was able to pull even further ahead. The Panthers finished up the set with a pair of aces from Marino and a kill from Skidmore for a final score of 25-18."

"Two local churches will be looking to carry on an annual tradition this Saturday, when they host a harvest festival on the Town Common. 

The First Baptist Church of Bellingham and the Bellingham Bible Baptist Church will be holding their "Harvest Fest" starting at 11 a.m. and running to 3 p.m.
Pastor Baron Rodrigues of the First Baptist Church said the event dates back to around 2012. 

"At the time, businesses were struggling and people were struggling," he said. "Money was tight, which is why everything's free at the festival - there's no selling of anything."

"The Stony Brook Camera Club will present a program, “Photoshop Tips for Quick Fixes” by Rick Cloran, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Anglican Church of the Redeemer, 31 Hayward St., Franklin. 

Cloran has been a member of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association since 1975, and a member of the Photographic Society of America since 1976. During that time, he participated in workshops with such noted photographers as George Lepp, John Shaw and John Gerlach as he developed his own photographic style. 

Since 1986, Cloran has lectured and judged photographic exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. In recognition of his work in support of local, regional and national photographic organizations, Cloran has been awarded the honors of fellow of the Photographic Society of America, and is an honorary member of the New England Camera Club Council."

Franklin Art Association - October 5, 2016

The Franklin Art Association will meet on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 6:30 to 9:00PM at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street in Franklin.

Refreshments and social time will begin at 6:30 followed by a short business meeting and Art Swap. Artist members bring art materials and related items such as frames to share. Time permitting there will be art videos to view.

Reminder: Miniature Metal Artwork Exhibit opens Oct 2

A very special exhibit will open October 2nd at the Franklin Historical Museum. A personal collection of miniature metal artwork, hand crafted by Franklin born Abraham Megerdichian will be on display for the month of October. Megerdichian’s son Robert will open the exhibit with a presentation and talk about the history of his father’s work.

A selection of about 20 tiny recreations of everyday objects, made from brass, aluminum, stainless-steel and copper will be on display. A sampling of items for this exhibit include: a brass Asphalt Roller, a copper and steel Cannon with Cannonballs, an aluminum Inkwell with Feather Pen, a Flexible Flyer Sled and tiny brass Roller Skates.

In his life time, the elder Megerdichian, a machinist by trade, made over 300 miniatures for family and friends as gifts for holidays and special occasions. Just a hobby to him at the time, his work is now being recognized as the intricate creative artwork that it is. It’s a labor of love by his son Robert to bring his father’s work out of storage and into the public eye.

Various pieces are currently being exhibited at The Attleboro Area Museum of Industry, The Science Museum in Boston, The Lynn Museum, the Providence Children’s Museum, and soon at Connecticut’s New Britain Industrial Museum. Robert approached the Franklin Historical Museum because of his father’s connection to Franklin.

Abraham was born in Franklin in 1923 to Armenian Immigrants, but the family later moved to Cambridge where he was raised. The family kept close ties to Franklin and Abraham helped build Camp Haiastan, the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) Camp on Summer Street.

Robert Megerdichian’s presentation will cover his father’s craft, his artwork, his love of family, as well as an interesting history and anecdotal stories of Franklin’s Armenian Community.

*** Girls Soccer = Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final 

– Miranda Smith scored twice and assisted on the third goal for the Panthers. Jess Kroushl added a goal and an assist and Emily Mastaj had an assist for Franklin.

"On a cold, rainy afternoon at the Beaver Street turf, Franklin and King Phillip battled hard for 60 minutes and finished level with a 1-1 tie. 

The two teams, who were both ranked in HockomockSports.com’s latest Hock 5 rankings, with Franklin at #1 and KP at #3, came into the game unbeaten in Hockomock League play. 

Early on, Franklin took control with two shots in the first three minutes, but sound defense from KP prevented the Panthers from scoring."

"The town's elementary schools put forward their school improvement plans this week. 

The principals, speaking before the School Committee Tuesday night, noted that while the plans largely hewed to the overall district plan, each was tailored to apply to the individual school. 

They told the committee that there were numerous common themes between the plans, including a focus on social-emotional learning; the development of a school culture; the use of best practices for homework and instructional strategies; and an emphasis on two-way communication with the community. Each school, though, pursues those elements in different ways."

Parmenter School has their curriculum night scheduled for 9/29 

"Keith Donaldson, a silhouette artist at Walt Disney World, will make silhouettes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Franklin Art Center, 391 E. Central St. 

The silhouettes take two to three minutes to complete. Participants will receive a copy from the right and left, and frames will be available to purchase.

Tri-County to host Showcase Spectacular on Saturday, October 1

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School will host its 2016 Showcase Spectacular on Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All members of the community are invited to attend this free event.

Each of the school’s 16 Career Programs will provide unique activities and games for the whole family. Attendees will have the opportunity to operate robots and view a 3D printing demonstration in Engineering Technology. The Graphic Communications program will demonstrate the screen printing process on the same machines used by industry professionals.

After working up an appetite, visitors can stop into the cafeteria to enjoy a delicious meal made by Culinary Arts. Students will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, cookies, brownies, and more.

The goal of the Showcase Spectacular is to offer the community an opportunity to learn more about their local vocational technical school in a fun and interactive setting.

“Our second annual Showcase Spectacular gives the community an opportunity to view firsthand what makes Career Vocational Technical Education so popular with students, employers and political leaders,” explained Superintendent-Director Stephen F. Dockray.

Campus maps and tour booklets will be provided to those who would like to learn more about the school.

Tri-County RVTHS, located at 147 Pond Street in Franklin, is a recipient of the High Schools That Work Gold Achievement Award and serves the communities of Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleborough, Plainville, Seekonk, Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.

*** Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ Brockton, 0 – Final 

FHS Panthers

– The Panthers used dominant net performances from Maggie Doyle and Meaghan Maguire to sweep the Boxers. Lauren Lockhart chipped in with 10 kills for the Panthers while Erin Skidmore had 14 digs, nine kills and an ace and Riley Marino had 10 digs and two aces.

*** Golf = Franklin, 159 @ Taunton, 189 – Final 

– Bryan Woelfel’s low-round of 35 earned match medalist to lead the Panthers to a win on the road. Matt D’Errico added a 40 and Eric Civetti shot a 41 for the Panthers. Justin Proto led Taunton with a 39 and Mike Volkmann carded a round of 41.

*** Boys cross country = Franklin, 39 @ Mansfield, 18 – Final 

– Mansfield grabbed the top four finishes and six of the top 10 to get the win. Kalin Petrov won the race in 17:29, with teammates Nick Rispoli (17:44), Collin Rice (17:50) and Patrick Heavey (17:56) finished second, third and fourth respectively. Franklin’s Everett Henderson (18:00), Mike Hagen (18:05) and Mitchell Regan (18:05) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

*** Girls cross country = Franklin, 18 @ Mansfield, 45 – Final 

– Franklin junior Nicole Clermont won her third straight league meet, clocking in at 20:29. Katherine Hartnett finished second at 21:08 and Ella Gutkowski was third for the Panthers, fourth overall, in 22:14.

Fall Open Houses at FSPA - Oct 4 and Oct 12

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will hold Fall Open Houses for prospective students and families on Tuesday, October 4 from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday, October 12 from 10-4 at 38 Main Street in downtown Franklin. The community is invited to tour the facilities, speak with faculty and staff, and learn more about FSPA programs in music, dance, and drama. Prospective students are also encouraged to try a complimentary class.

Founded in 1985 by Director Raye Lynn Mercer, FSPA has been dedicated to the enjoyment of the arts for all ages and to the artistic growth and development of young people. The school provides an extraordinary faculty of artist-teachers and a nurturing environment where students grow skills for the stage and for life. FSPA offers extensive classes in all dance disciplines, acting, musical theater, voice, and instrumental instruction, whether for recreational enjoyment or serious study. FSPA is also home to the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano.

A year-round calendar of performing opportunities features musicals, plays, voice and instrumental recitals, opera scenes, chamber ensembles, acoustic coffee houses, musical theater showcases, summer theater productions, ballet and dance company performances, and the school’s signature Spring Concert. THE BLACK BOX, the home of the Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), is located just behind the school and provides a professional venue for FSPA student productions. In the News: workshop on superintendent search scheduled, Pour for Paws wine tasting, audition for Rising Stars

"The School Committee heard an update Tuesday night on efforts to hire a new superintendent. 

The school district has officially entered into a contract with ECRA - part of the executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates. The committee had chosen the firm at a meeting earlier in September. 

Committee Chairman Kevin O'Malley said it appeared the firm had made the district a priority. 

"They consider us a significant district," he said, noting that the firm believes doing well in Franklin will encourage other districts to consider it for their searches. "I think we have a good thing going with them."

"Franklin Performing Arts Company will hold open auditions for the second Rising Stars Cabaret on Oct. 8 at The Black Box, 15 W. Central St., Franklin.  Auditions will begin at 1 p.m. for ages 6-8; 1:30 p.m. for ages 9-10; 2 p.m. for ages 11-12; and 2:30 p.m. for teens.

Students must be 6 or older on the audition date to participate. 

Rising Stars will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 as part of the venue’s Black Box Cabaret series."
