FHS baseball tops Lincoln-Sudbury to take Pedroli Classic

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Saturday, May 25, 2024

Baseball = Franklin, 5 vs. Lincoln-Sudbury, 1 – Final
– A three-run fourth inning paired with strong pitching led Franklin to a win over Lincoln-Sudbury on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the third but the Panthers wasted little time responding, pushing across three in the top half of the fourth. Ben Yuknis (single), Zach Winer (single), and Mike Davide (walk) loaded the bases and, after Yuknis scored on a passed ball, senior Lukas Phillip plated a pair with a double to left to make it 3-1. Franklin tacked on one insurance run in the sixth on a bunt from Matt Miller that scored Jake Shaughnessy (double) and another in the seventh on an RBI double from Winer to score Yuknis (single). Austin Campbell earned the win for the Panthers, surrendering the one run on four hits and three walks, striking out three. Miller tossed a scoreless inning in relief with one hit and no walks.

With this win, the FHS team captures the Rich Pedroli Daily News Classic.

Milford Daily News: "In Franklin, decades of rapid growth haven't changed community's downtown feel"

"When Rick Herrick was growing up, he could walk down Main Street and know most people by name, and the rest by sight.

“That’s not the case anymore, but, that being said, there’s still a great sense of community, which I think is kind of unique," said Herrick, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices Commonwealth Real Estate. "People that come to Franklin, it seems like they set roots there and they don’t want to leave.”

Herrick has seen it firsthand — he’s been selling real estate for more than 30 years. He’s worked with people who grew up in, and wanted to buy a home in Franklin, and then another home as their family grew and a third when they want to downsize."

"Eisig Chin remembers May 5, 2018, like it was yesterday.
He was in Plainville with his GBG 13U team, suited up for a doubleheader against Nakona.
Two innings later, his life changed.
Chin was starting in right field. A Nakona hitter scorched a ball into the right-center gap and Chin raced after it. So did the center fielder. No one called for it. The ensuing collision was ugly, and Chin suffered the brunt of it"

Milford Daily News: "Franklin lacrosse hosts 'Nick Gaspar Night'"

"Around 6:40 PM on Monday, a line of 21 police cars slowly drove onto the track at Pisini Stadium.

They weren’t there for any trouble, however. They were part of a pregame ceremony for a special young man.

In the middle of the motorcade was a gray SUV driven by Tim Gaspar. Gaspar’s 15-year old son, Nick, a freshman at Franklin High, and the rest of the Gaspar family were also in the car. The car circled around the track before coming to a stop on the far sideline at the 50-yard line.

That’s when the Gaspar family exited the vehicle before Nick walked out to midfield, where he was greeted by the Franklin varsity and JV boys lacrosse captains as well as a bunch of Franklin youngsters. He was then presented with a new stick with a custom blue head, the same color as his favorite college basketball team: University of North Carolina."

Candlelight vigil coverage as the Franklin community came together Sunday evening

"Bethany Manning stood on the top step of the brick gazebo in the town common Sunday night and looked out over a sea of people wrapped in winter coats and holding candles in gloved hands, the small flames flickering in the cold, gentle breeze.
Manning, speaking into a microphone so the crowd of several hundred could hear, remembered her friend, Shirley Branco Owen, who was killed Friday morning, allegedly at the hands of her former husband, Brendon J. Owen.
Shirley Owen was a “daughter, a mother, a sister, an aunt, and a friend to everyone that had the blessing to know her,” Manning said. “She was the light in every room, and she was a hot ticket. She got things done. And boy, boy, did she advocate and do everything for her amazing children.”

“We definitely want (the café) to be a gathering place where people can come for a variety of reasons, like sitting down at the bar to enjoy some lunch and wine, grabbing a coffee and muffin to-go, getting family brunch with your kids where they can have classic French toast pancakes," said Salvador. "The main thing is that we want it to be an especially comfortable and cozy place for people to be."

“There isn’t anything more local than a public access studio"

"If you’re one of many people in the United States who has decided to do away with cable in the last few years — or never had it to begin with — you’re not alone.
But the exodus is cutting in to the revenue that makes certain services possible. Specifically, Public, Education and Government channels, or PEG channels.
What are PEG channels?
Parents who have tuned in to school committee meetings to scope out reopening plans or residents who’ve watched city council meetings for updates on construction projects— or done so after the fact — likely have PEG channels to thank.
“If you put on your local government channel, and you watch it, I call it the best reality on television,” said Scott Mercer, executive director of Access Framingham, the nonprofit that runs the PEG channels in Framingham. “We are the ones who maintain and produce and support the citizens of Framingham to have a television station.”

Milford Daily News: "Did you find a painted whelk in Franklin?"

"For three years, Katie Loder, 63, was reminded by doctors that she would probably die soon.
But they also didn’t know exactly what was wrong with her — and still don’t, said Loder, who also previously had esophageal cancer.
The Wareham resident wasn’t allowed to go outside or near anyone, not even to the mailbox. But eventually, doctors said she could go alone to the beach. More often than not it was Onset Beach. It’s where she would often find an array of whelk shells -- from the larger knobbed whelks to smoother channeled and waved whelks, to smaller Stimson’s whelks -- and started collecting them.
Today, you can find more than 300 of those shells scattered across Franklin -on benches, outside the window sills of storefronts and sometimes even in random front yards when she tosses them from her moving car while driving by. "

"Franklin teen honored as a Commonwealth Heroine"

"Speaking up, and making a difference. Franklin teen honored as a Commonwealth Heroine"
Not so long ago, Ndoumbe Ndoye would never have imagined herself getting up in front of a crowd to talk about issues of social justice and racism, and to share her own personal encounters.

Now she can't imagine NOT talking about these things — ever since she steeled herself to get up in front of a crowd on the Franklin town common last year as people rallied following the death of George Floyd.

There, she gave an emotional speech that brought tears to her own and others' eyes. And since then she has been actively working to promote racial understanding and justice.

Milford Daily News: Franklin Police left Civil Service, part of a trend

"When Thomas Lynch took over as Franklin police chief in 2016, the department had no female officers.

Since then, Lynch has hired six of them, which he said offers a much-needed diversity to the police department.
He was able to do it easier because Franklin does not use Civil Service, a method that he said limits candidates available to a department to two or three candidates instead of a wide pool.

“I wanted experienced female officers,” said Lynch. “We can gear our tests to what we want in Franklin.”
Chief Lynch speaks to @milforddaily about leaving Civil Service for hiring of police officers, and the advantages it brings. https://t.co/lq8O4C4cm8
