An Agway Story: Time to move on?

JANUARY 19, 2024 - In a world where you can be anything, be kind

HEY FRIENDS,

Neal and I have had quite a few years! Between multiple deaths of loved ones, births of loved ones and the "Long time that shall not be named" when we were abused by not so appreciative customers, we have decided it is time for us to move on and to construct a different life that will allow us to see our granddaughters and offer us some time to enjoy life again.

TO THAT END we both have found new jobs that we are enjoying and we are officially announcing that we are selling the store. While we don't know what form the store will take in the future we do suspect that it will change.

Online shopping has certainly made things more challenging. We believe the store can be a viable option for someone but the new iteration of the "Franklin Agway" will not have us at the helm.

WE HAVE HAD some great times in the past eight years and met some truly wonderful people. Choosing to work and live in the same community has really given us a deeper understanding of Franklin and it's people. Doing so has allowed us to feel at home. Working to promote farmers and thoughtful stewardship of the earth in our community has really been the most rewarding for us. Our goal has always been to invest time, energy and love into the community in which we live. Between the store and the Town Council we have come to know thousands of our
neighbors! We both are glad we made Franklin our home.

IF ANYONE HAS an interest in purchasing the business, or knows of someone who might, please reach out to us directly and please don't trouble our employees. We will be honest about the numbers and do not play games.

Peace,
Mel and Neal and the Agway Crew

What We Say Matters: A Timely Conversation Exploring the Power of Words to Shape Others and a Person’s Own Behavior - Jan 28

What We Say Matters: A Timely Conversation
Exploring the Power of Words to Shape Others
and a Person’s Own Behavior

Dr. Drew Bogner, President Emeritus of Molloy University, and a lay member of the First Universalist Society in Franklin, will speak about the power of words and phrases to shape the behavior of others and ourselves.   He will incorporate the research of Dr. Masuru Emoto on the impact of negative and positive words, and share conversations he has had on this topic with individuals ranging from Buddhist monks to Paul Rusesabagina of Hotel Rwanda. In the second part of the service, Drew will focus on how what we say to ourselves can influence how we experience the world. This includes how we can respond to caustic, hateful, and demeaning language that others use.

Local taxes on meals, hotels could rise under Healey plan

"Governor Maura Healey, who this week swore off raising state taxes, unveiled sweeping legislation Friday that would allow towns and cities to raise their taxes on hotel stays, cars, and meals by as much as 33 percent to help bolster their local coffers.

The sprawling bill has the backing of municipal leaders, and if embraced by the Legislature, could generate more than $150 million in new annual tax revenue for towns and cities juggling tight budgets, state officials estimated.

Healey also is seeking a series of other major changes, including allowing local officials to set caps on the number of liquor licenses distributed in their city or town, a power long-held by the Legislature. The governor said she is proposing to make permanent a raft of pandemic-era rules, such as allowing restaurants to sell to-go cocktails.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Healey said the package of changes “empowers the local communities” and does not affect the revenue the state relies on for its budget."

Half of recent US inflation due to high corporate profits, report finds | Inflation | The Guardian

"A new report claims “resounding evidence” shows that high corporate profits are a main driver of ongoing inflation, and companies continue to keep prices high even as their inflationary costs drop.

The report, compiled by the progressive Groundwork Collaborative thinktank, found corporate profits accounted for about 53% of inflation during last year’s second and third quarters. Profits drove just 11% of price growth in the 40 years prior to the pandemic, according to the report.

Prices for consumers rose by 3.4% over the past year, but input costs for producers increased by just 1%, according to the authors’ calculations, which were based on data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and National Income and Products Accounts.

“Costs have come down substantially, and while corporations were quick to pass on their increased costs to consumers, they are surprisingly less quick to pass on their savings to consumers,” Liz Pancotti, a Groundwork strategic adviser and paper co-author, said."
