Franklin Commemorates Overdose Awareness Day with Community Vigil - August 31, 2024

International Overdose Awareness Day will be marked this year in Franklin with a community vigil from 6 PM to 7 PM on August 31 at Franklin Town Common. This annual event is intended to end overdose, remember those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of those left behind.

The vigil is hosted by SAFE Coalition, a local nonprofit committed to inclusive and judgement-free support for substance use prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery, and family support. SAFE and volunteers will also place memorial flags in Franklin, Norfolk, Plainville, and Wrentham.

Jennifer Knight-Levine, CEO and co-founder of SAFE, says commemoration like IOAD is not just for those whose lives have been touched by overdose, but the entire community. “Losing a loved one to addiction can be isolating and deeply painful,” says Knight-Levine. “Coming together and building community with those who have felt a similar loss leaves everyone with a greater sense of connection and purpose.”

The threat of overdose is both serious and urgent. Massachusetts experienced 2,125 fatal overdoses in 2023, making the state 15th in the nation for overdose deaths, according to the state’s Department of Health. The Center for Disease Control reports over 107,000 people died nationwide from overdose in 2023.
According to Knight-Levine, the need for awareness-raising events like IOAD is more important than ever.

“The opioid epidemic has dramatically changed how we think about prescribing practices, family medication history, and the power and role of pharmaceutical companies,” says Knight-Levine. “But it has most directly broken families and torn apart communities. This vigil is really a community formed to honor and remember those who have passed from an overdose.”

This year, thousands of communities worldwide will participate in IOAD, which was established in 2001. The theme of IOAD 2024 is “Together We Can,” highlighting the power of our community when we all stand together.

Those wishing to volunteer with SAFE to place flags or help with the vigils can email info@safecoalitionma.org People can also participate by using the hashtags #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose.

With support groups, educational courses, events, training, support services and more, SAFE provides a whole-person, whole-family, whole-community approach to addiction, prevention, and recovery. Hello Franklin!
Branding Survey
Branding Survey

The Town is developing a new brand and logo to represent Franklin's unique strengths and assets as well as the community's vision for the future. Branding is more than just a logo - it touches every aspect of the Town's visual representation and seeks to illustrate how the Town depicts itself. Franklin's updated brand should reflect the community's identity and core values. We need your input to help create a stronger, viable and relatable image with a unified message.

We received a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to make this project possible and welcome your feedback via the this community survey. Please take a couple minutes to fill out the information below. We want to hear from you if you live here, work here, or visit us often! Your input will help us form the new Town of Franklin brand which will be used for marketing, placemaking, wayfinding, business recruitment, and more!

The results of this survey will only be used for Town of Franklin brand design purposes. Please answer the questions based on your personal experience as a resident of Franklin or your time visiting Franklin. Demographic information is collected as part of this survey to ensure a well-rounded community perspective.

Spanish Conversation Meet-up group schedules session for Franklin Public Library on Aug 7

"This group is for intermediate through advanced speakers who want to enjoy social conversation ENTIRELY IN SPANISH. For those learning Spanish, this is the best way to sharpen your conversation skills.
Conversations focus on fun and familiar topics. We welcome native speakers, and ask them to speak at a moderate pace during meetups, so that everyone can understand most or all of what is said.
This is not a beginner's group. We do not stop conversation to translate into English. This is also not a political group. While we may touch on a variety of topics, we avoid highly-charged discussions about upcoming elections and individual politicians.
Everyone is welcome and conversation is always friendly! We listen to everyone respectfully, and we don't worry about grammatical mistakes.
Come join us!"

"In this first episode in a series on the possibilities and costs of living beyond human scale, Brené and Esther Perel discuss how we manage the paradox of exploring the world of social media and emerging technologies while staying tethered to our humanness. How do we create IRL relationships where we see and value others and feel seen and valued in the context of constant scrolling and using digital technology as armor?"
