2024 HockomockSports Baseball Awards recognizes FHS' Cinelli, Caccavelli & Campbell

2024 HockomockSports.com Baseball Awards recognize the following Franklin High School athletes:

Rex Cinelli – Franklin – Outfield
Franklin senior Rex Cinelli wrapped up a tremendous athletic career with a strong final spring. Cinelli, who earned HockomockSports.com Player of the Year in the fall for boys soccer, was a great leader for the Panthers this spring, who reached the tournament yet again. Defensively, he was reliable and covered a lot of ground in center field. Offensively, he had 26 hits and finished with a 0.342 batting average, including a pair of doubles, along with 10 RBI, 12 runs, seven walks, and 11 stolen bases. “Rex has been a two-year starter, batted in the middle of our lineup, and was our most consistent run producer,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “He was an elite defender in center field, but more importantly he’s a tireless worker and a great leader.”

Dom Caccavelli – Franklin – Infield
Franklin senior Dom Caccavelli ended his high school career on a high note, emerging into a key piece for the Panthers this season. Caccavelli provided strong defense while playing at second base and primarily hit second in the lineup, helping set the table for Franklin’s offense. During the 2024 season, he hit 0.328 on 19 hits, including a pair of hits. He scored 18 runs and drove in seven runs, also drawing 13 walks and stealing 13 bases. “Dom is a worker and leader and maximized his ability,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “He’s always been steady defensively but this year he made significant strides offensively and led our team in runs scored, stolen bases, and walks. Dom really had a great all-around senior season.”

Austin Campbell – Franklin – Pitcher
Franklin senior Austin Campbell was one of the toughest pitchers to have success against this year and helped the Panthers get back to the state tournament yet again this season. His record (3-5) was not indicative of his dominance on the mound this year as he led the Hockomock League with 88 strikeouts, allowing a total of just 31 hits and 17 earned runs. He finished his senior season with a 2.13 ERA. “Austin has tremendous stuff on the hill,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “Which is evident by his high strikeout totals and low hit totals. Austin is a great competitor who always wants the ball in big games and big spots. He will be greatly missed.”

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Baseball = Division 1 = #15 Franklin, 4 @ #2 St. John’s Shrewsbury, 5 – Final (8 inn.)
– Down to its last out in the top of the seventh, Franklin rallied for a pair of runs to keep the game going but St. John’s came through with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. A two-out, two-run double from senior Ben Yuknis plated a pair in the top of the third to give the Panthers an early lead. The Pioneers cut that lead in half with a run in the fourth and scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth to seize their first lead of the game, 4-2. In the top of the seventh, sophomore Sean Kryzak led off with a walk, senior Henry Digiorgio singled, and Yuknis was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Senior Jake Shaughnessy came through with a single to left to bring in two runs and tie the game. Franklin had a chance to regain the lead in the top of the eighth when Kryzak singled and Dom Caccavelli walked, both with two outs, but the Pioneers got a big strikeout. St. John’s pushed across the winning run after a two-out single from Jamie Herlihy, who then stole second, and scored on a single from Brayden Mercier. Shaughnessy allowed one run on five hits and one walk, striking out seven in five innings.

FHS baseball tops Lawrence to advance in playoffs, girls tennis end playoff run at Belmont

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Baseball = Division 1 = #18 Lawrence, 2 @ #15 Franklin, 5 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provide the game recap:

"This time of year, there are no bad teams and there aren’t any easy games.

Against a talented Lawrence squad, #15 Franklin created enough offense and came up with key plays at key moments to secure a 5-2 win in a Division 1 Round of 32 matchup on Sunday evening.

Despite just five hits, Franklin manufactured five runs through a combination of walks (four), aggressive base running, and selfless plays at the dish. On the mound, senior Austin Campbell battled his way through six innings and delivered in the biggest moments of the game.

“Anybody that makes it to this point in the season is a good baseball team,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “This Lawrence team, they have a lot of pride and they’re well prepared. All the reports we got from teams that had played them were extremely complimentary of their lineup, how dangerous they were, and how aggressive they were. And it all played out there [tonight].”

Baseball = Franklin, 5 vs. Lincoln-Sudbury, 1 – Final

The Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the third but the Panthers wasted little time responding, pushing across three in the top half of the fourth. Ben Yuknis (single), Zach Winer (single), and Mike Davide (walk) loaded the bases and, after Yuknis scored on a passed ball, senior Lukas Phillip plated a pair with a double to left to make it 3-1. Franklin tacked on one insurance run in the sixth on a bunt from Matt Miller that scored Jake Shaughnessy (double) and another in the seventh on an RBI double from Winer to score Yuknis (single). Austin Campbell earned the win for the Panthers, surrendering the one run on four hits and three walks, striking out three. Miller tossed a scoreless inning in relief with one hit and no walks.

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, May 20, 2024

Baseball = Milford, 2 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
Milford 2, Franklin 0. Campbell (5inn, 3H, 2R & 9Ks) & Shaughnessy (2inn, 0R, 0H & 5Ks) were solid on the hill. Offensively, DiGiorgio (2-2), Caccavelli (1-3), Cinelli (1-3), Yuknis (1-3) & Winer (1-3). Next up: Pedroli Tourney: Fri. 5/24 Franklin vs Natick at 7pm at Mahan Field.
– Milford senior Damien Carter had the best outing of his season, dazzling in a complete game shutout at Franklin. Carter scattered five hits — all singles — and only issued a single walk while striking out 10 Panthers in seven scoreless innings of work for the win. The senior righty retired the side in order in the second, third, and fifth innings while working around a two-out single in the first. Franklin loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but Carter got a fly ball to center. The Panthers also threatened in the final two innings but Carter induced a double play in both frames. Milford took the lead in the top of the third when Carter helped his own cause, smacking a one-out single to center to bring Louis Consigli (fielder’s choice) home. After Consigli clubbed a one-out double in the fifth, Carter was intentionally walked and then Keith Lee drew his league-leading 14th walk to load the bases. Franklin got the second out with a foul tip out but Joey McGee’s patience proved pivotal as he drew a walk on a full count to bring in a second run for the Hawks. Austin Campbell pitched well for the Panthers, striking out nine in five innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and five walks. Jake Shaughnessy tossed two scoreless innings in relief without allowing a hit or a walk, striking out five.

Softball = Franklin, 9 @ Milford, 4 – Final
– A big third inning helped Franklin return home from Milford with a 9-4 verdict, splitting the season series with the Hawks. With the game tied 1-1 going into the third, Sophia Sacramone, Ciara O’Brien, and Josie Drucker had back-to-back-to-back singles with the bases loaded to each drive in a run and then sophomore Ava Florest cleared them with a two-out three-run single to center to make it 7-1. Milford pulled three runs back in the bottom half, including a two-out two-run double from Sarah Wengal but Franklin tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fourth and in the seventh (Addi Weiss RBI single) to pull away for good. Carly Johnson-Pellegri went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for the Panters while Ella Weston added two hits and two runs. Sacramone earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk, striking out six. Cae Pellegrini finished 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 21 @ Taunton, 1 – Final
⭐️ Langevin 2🚨 8🍎 ( School Record)
⭐️⭐️  Hansen 3🚨
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Obrien 3🚨

Girls Lacrosse = Taunton, 3 @ Franklin, 19 – Final
– Franklin closed out another perfect league season, improving to 11-0 against Hock opponents with a 19-3 verdict against Taunton. Seniors Katie Ryan had five goals and one assist, senior Keira Kuchich tallied twice, and senior Norah MacCallum added two goals and one assist for the Panthers. Taunton’s Cali Melo netted a hat trick and had five draw controls.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final
– Franklin went on the road and returned home from Milford with a 5-0 verdict, taking all five matches in straight sets. senior Jay Gorgas (6-1, 6-1), junior Dan Reis (6-1, 6-2), and senior Ahan Shetty (6-3, 6-0) took care of business in singles action for the Panthers. The team of Andrew Amante and Aaron Ramaswamy (6-2, 6-2) took a straight-set win at first doubles, and the second doubles duo of Jack Sebell and Charlie Souza (6-2, 6-1) did the same.

Girls Tennis = Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– A sweep under the lights gave Franklin a win over Milford and clinched a share of its first ever league title in program history. The Panthers won all three singles matches in straight sets and swept both doubles matches to clinch at least a share of the Kelley-Rex title; one more win from either of its final two matches would clinch it outright. Senior Chloe Essam (6-2, 6-1), senior Brooke Taylor (6-0, 6-0), and senior Smruthie Paladugu (6-1, 6-2) took care of business in singles action for the Panthers. The team of seniors Ava Davies and Lexi Winkler added a 6-1, 7-6 win at first doubles while the all-senior second doubles tandem of Mia Dewsnap and Lindsey Leonard prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 10-3.

Senior Dom Caccavelli (3-for-4, RBI, two runs) led off with an infield single and senior Henry Digiorgio reached on a bunt single. A sacrifice from senior Rex Cinelli moved the runners up a bag, and an intentional walk to senior Ben Yuknis loaded the bases with one out. Shaughnessy’s first hit of the game proved to be the biggest, bringing Caccavelli home for the win. Senior Ryan Kane allowed one unearned run on one hit and no walks, striking out two in two innings of work, Mason Smith surrendered an unearned run on one hit and one walk in an inning of relieve, and senior Brian Auciello blanked the Flyers for two innings, striking out one without giving up a hit or walk. Zach Winer got the win after pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings, recording a pair of strikeouts.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 12 vs. Bishop Feehan, 7 – Final
– After Bishop Feehan closed the game down to three goals at halftime, Franklin responded with a big third quarter to double the advantage (11-5) going into the fourth and held on the rest of the way. Zach Langevin had a strong outing for the Panthers, scoring a hat trick to go along with two assists. Dylan McEvoy also netted a hat trick and had one helper, and Drew Hansen scored once with one assist.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 14 @ Bishop Feehan, 7 – Final
– Franklin grew its lead throughout the game, pulling away from Bishop Feehan to return home from Attleboro with a non-league. The Panthers turned a 3-2 lead at the end of the first into a three-goal lead at halftime (7-4), and then outscored the hosts 4-1 in the third to carry an 11-5 lead into the final frame. Baseball = Franklin, 8 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning and that was enough offense for senior pitcher Matt Miller as the Panthers rolled to an 8-0 win. Sean Kryzak (HBP) and Henry Digiorgio (walk) both reached and then came scattering home on an inside-the-park home run from senior Ben Yuknis to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead after just a half an inning. Franklin went on to add a run in the third, two more in the fifth, and one in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Miller did the rest from there, tossing a two-hitter in six shutout innings of work, issuing just one walk with five strikeouts; senior Mason Smith struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief. Yuknis, Rex Cinelli (two RBI), Lukas Phillip (RBI, run), Zach Winer, and Jake Shaughnessy (RBI, run) each had two hits for Franklin. Softball = North Attleboro, 7 @ Franklin, 11 – Final

North Attleboro jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Maryellen Charette, Emily Tucker, and Lucy Palmer (3-for-4) and extended the lead to 5-0 on a sac fly from Molly Willey in the top of the second. Sacramone had an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth, Sarah Boozang added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, and Marley Allen smacked a two-run home run two batters later to tie the game at 7-7. Girls Lacrosse = Foxboro, 7 @ Franklin, 11 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"When the Franklin girls lacrosse team put its Hockomock League win streak on the line against rival King Philip just under two weeks ago, the Panthers had a sweat out a double-overtime win.

Facing their other big Hock hurdle this season, the Panthers played from in front the whole way.

Franklin scored the first four goals of the game and never trailed in an 11-7 win over Davenport division leading Foxboro to extend its league win streak to 119 straight games.

“It was a huge boost to start strong,” said Franklin head coach Kristin Igoe Guarino. “In the past, we’ve started slow and we’ve been really hard at practice on scoring. The girls really applied what we’ve been trying to work on in practice and really focusing on the details. They did a good job cleaning up our shots and our passing selection. They did awesome right from the start of the first quarter.”
