The playoff runs for both the FHS field hockey and volleyball teams ended on Wednesday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports playoff competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, Nov 15, 2023.

Field Hockey - Division 1 Final Four = #4 Franklin, 2 vs. #1 Walpole, 4  (@ Taunton)
"Final: Walpole 4, Franklin 2, Porkers pick up the win and return to the state title game, Panthers suffer only loss of the season in the state semifinal"

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap

"Franklin seemed confident in the build up to Wednesday night’s Div. 1 state semifinal at Taunton’s Aleixo Tiger Stadium. The Panthers had rolled through their first three playoff opponents, outscoring them 14-0. Everything appeared to be lined up for the Final Four game against Walpole to be a classic.

But, there is always a difference between preparing to face the top seeded Porkers and actually putting the plan in motion once you get on the field with them.

It took a little over a quarter for Franklin to start playing its typical game and by then the Panthers trailed by two goals. While the Kelley-Rex division champions had long stretches where they had Walpole on its heels, the Porkers took advantage of their corners and strong goalkeeping to pull out a 4-2 win and advance to yet another D1 final.

“They were nervous and uptight,” admitted Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “They were so tight in the first quarter and in between I was like, listen, you need to settle in. I tried to send them the message, yeah we’re playing Walpole but it’s just another game on our schedule. Them scoring that first goal kind of set the tone and made us think, uh oh here we go.”

Girls Soccer - Division 1 = #6 Franklin, 0 @ #3 Hopkinton, 1 – Final
– Johanna Dupont’s deflected strike against the run of play turned out to be enough for the unbeaten Hillers to secure a place in the Final Four. Franklin had the slight edge in possession in the opening half but struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances. Kelly O’Connor and Morgan Lovell each had shots from distance that were saved but nothing inside the box. After half an hour, Dupont picked up a pocket of space about 25 yards from goal and her shot took a heavy deflection before sliding just inside the post. In the second half, Franklin went searching for an equalizer. O’Connor ran onto a through ball from Lovell, getting a toe on it to knock it by the keeper but also just wide of the post. Selene Hammad had a shot from 20 yards saved and Anya Zub’s strike from the edge of the box went narrowly over. In the 56th minute, Hammad met Cassidy Carmignani’s corner with a powerful header that Aila Chase managed to stop on the line. The Franklin players insisted that the ball had crossed the goal line, but the official waved away their protests. Olivia Costa would also get a chance with five minutes to go, but again the shot stayed the wrong side of the post and the Hillers were able to see out the win.

FHS Volleyball wins to advance to D1 Final 4

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports playoff competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, Nov 9, 2023.

Volleyball - Division 1 = #10 Franklin, 3 @ #2 Haverhill, 2 – Final
– Franklin kept the match alive with a fourth set win and then rallied in the fifth to stun second-seeded Haverhill, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 15-12), to earn a spot in the Division 1 Final Four. The Panthers got off to a great start, 9-0, in the first but the Hillies climbed back into it and took it, gaining a 1-0 lead. After the Panthers pulled back even, Haverhill once again surged ahead late for a 2-1 lead. With the fourth tied 13-13, Franklin went on a 12-7 run to close it out and keep the match going. The Panthers trailed, 8-7, at the switch in the fifth but won back-to-back points and never trailed again. Taylor Lacerda clinched the win with her 13th kill of the match, slamming a shot down the line. FHS girls & boys soccer teams and field hockey teams win to advance to Quarterfinals

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports playoff competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, Nov 8, 2023.

Boys Soccer - Division 1 = #10 Franklin, 2 @ #7 Newton North, 0 – Final
– An early goal set the tone for the Panthers, who went on the road and knocked off #7 Newton North with a 2-0 victory. Junior Wyatt Herndon opened the scoring just seven minutes into the game, converting a feed from Hansy Jacques to put the Panthers ahead, and that’s where they stayed. Noah Cain tallied a key insurance goal just beyond the midway point of the second half with an assist going to Andrew O’Neill. #10 Franklin will travel to #2 Needham in a Division 1 Round of 8 matchup on Saturday at 5:00.

Girls Soccer - Division 1 = #11 Algonquin, 1 @ #6 Franklin, 2 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap
"With just under 16 minutes to go in Wednesday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game at Pisini Field, Algonquin stunned the home crowd with an equalizing goal. The Titans had been pushing and had Franklin on it heels, so it felt like a goal was coming but its arrival was still deflating.

On the field, the Panthers were unfazed. They wasted no time regrouping and exactly a minute later they were right back in front.

Anya Zub drove at the Algonquin defense, forcing the Titans to backpedal. Kelly O’Connor started on the left, cut across the defense, and made a run in front of Zub down the right channel. She got the pass on her right foot, took a quick look at the goalie, and angled a perfect shot past the keeper’s dive and into the side netting.

It was the perfect, immediate response that Franklin needed and the Panthers rode that jolt of energy over the final 14 minutes, holding off Algonquin attacks and securing a 2-1 victory that sends them to the D1 quarterfinal."
Franklin (18-2-0) will travel to No. 3 Hopkinton on Saturday afternoon for the D1 quarterfinal.

Field Hockey - Division 1 = #13 Winchester, 0 @ #4 Franklin, 6 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap
"Franklin came into Wednesday afternoon’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game against Winchester at Beaver St. Field as the higher seed and the favorite. The Panthers wanted to get off to a good start, putting the visitors on their heels, and taking away any fears of an upset.

Mission accomplished.

The Panthers had 10 corners, forced Winchester goalie Molly Hillier into a dozen saves, and found the back of the net twice – all in the opening quarter. It was the perfect start to a dominating 6-0 win that sends Franklin back to the D1 quarterfinal for the third straight season.

“They came together today,” Franklin coach Michelle Hess said. “Every single game they just keep getting better and better. They’re coming together as a team, they’re executing all the things that we’ve told them, they’re playing clean hockey."

FHS volleyball wins first playoff game vs. Wachusett to advance

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports playoff competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, Nov 2, 2023.

Volleyball = Division 1 = #23 Wachusett, 0 @ #10 Franklin, 3 - Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Franklin’s season hit a big speed bump at the midway point, but the Panthers are now peaking at the right time.

Through its first eight matches, the Panthers hadn’t dropped a single set. Then came the loss of starting libero Leah Cooke to a season-ending injury as well as back-to-back losses to Canton and Attleboro. A tight five-set win over Mansfield righted the ship, and now Franklin is streaking.

The Panthers, the 10th seed in the MIAA Division 1 tournament, made it nine wins in a row with a convincing sweep of #23 Wachusett (25-12, 25-12, 25-12) to book a spot in the Round of 16.

“A big part of having to kind of restart understanding the idea that we could lose because up to that point, we hadn’t lost a set,” said Franklin head coach Sam Redmond. “We had to figure out how to fight for each set and make sure that we were working hard all the time. We’ve really been practicing focusing on point by point, siding out when we need to, and not letting the other team get a lot of rallies."

Via HockomockSports.com and Milford Daily News, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Saturday, March 7, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Division 1 = #3 Franklin, 47 vs. #14 Brockton, 56 – Final
"Ben Harvey wanted one last shot.

Following Franklin’s 56-47 loss to Brockton in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 16 on Tuesday, the Franklin High basketball senior captain — still in full uniform nearly a half hour after the final whistle — took a basketball out onto the mostly-empty Panthers court and attempted a free throw.

“Everyone knows the golden rule (that) you can’t end on a miss and I missed that (3-pointer) with eight seconds left so (I) had to end on a make,” Harvey said. “Free throws (have) been my most improved part of my game all year. So had to end it on a free throw.”

FHS girls basketball end run in playoffs vs. Bishop Feehan on Monday

Girls Basketball = Division 1 = #2 Bishop Feehan, 69 vs. #15 Franklin, 61 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com  provides the game recap -
"On the road against the No. 2 seed, Franklin (18-5) went into Monday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game wanting to prove that it can compete with one of the state’s best. To accomplish that goal, the Panthers were going to need to play some of their best basketball of the season.

In front of a packed, raucous gym, they did just that.

Franklin stormed out of the gates, building a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Bishop Feehan rallied to cut the lead to just one by halftime and grabbed a lead heading to the fourth quarter, but the Shamrocks weren’t able to put the game away until the final minute, going 13-of-18 at the line in the fourth to pull out a 69-61 victory.

“I have nothing but pride,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. “I’m so happy with the way they played. I know the final score is what it is, but we went out and played our best basketball and that’s all you can ask them to do.”

FHS girls and boys basketball teams win to advance in playoffs on Thursday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, March 2, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

  • Boys Basketball = Division 1 = #3 Franklin, 62 vs. #30 Weymouth, 49 – Final
Ryan Lanigan,  the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"As Franklin prepared all week to go against Weymouth’s aggressive zone defense, the Panthers knew they’d have some looks from outside.
Senior Justin Allen certainly took advantage of that opportunity.

Allen was nearly flawless as poured in a career-high 25 points on 8-for-9 shooting from three-point land, leading the third-seeded Panthers to a hard-fought 61-49 win over #30 Weymouth in a Division 1 Round of 32 game.

“I just hit the open shots, my teammates found me and once I see a couple go in, that basket just gets bigger,” Allen said. “With them in a zone, it just opens things up for us and we have great creators like Ben Harvey and Bradley [Herndon], and everyone else too. They were finding me and I was just knocking down shots."

  • Girls Basketball = Division 1 = #15 Franklin, 62 vs. #18 Newton South, 50 – Final
Ryan Lanigan,  the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"Franklin battled against foul trouble throughout the first half and couldn’t quite shake the 18th-seeded Lions of Newton South.
But with its full complement of players back in the mix in the second half, the 15th-seeded Panthers proved to have too many weapons.

Franklin had four players score in double figures and had a big second half offensively to land a 62-50 win over the Lions, advancing to the Round of 16.

“I thought we got in bad foul trouble early in the game and didn’t rebound great,” said Franklin head coach John Leighton. “When we got Lizzy [Newman] back we were able to use our height advantage a little more and got them to spread out [defensively] and then we could score in multiple ways. Mainly I thought it was our defense that improved and that was the difference.”
