The playoff runs for both the FHS field hockey and volleyball teams ended on Wednesday
"Final: Walpole 4, Franklin 2, Porkers pick up the win and return to the state title game, Panthers suffer only loss of the season in the state semifinal"
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Franklin seemed confident in the build up to Wednesday night’s Div. 1 state semifinal at Taunton’s Aleixo Tiger Stadium. The Panthers had rolled through their first three playoff opponents, outscoring them 14-0. Everything appeared to be lined up for the Final Four game against Walpole to be a classic. But, there is always a difference between preparing to face the top seeded Porkers and actually putting the plan in motion once you get on the field with them.It took a little over a quarter for Franklin to start playing its typical game and by then the Panthers trailed by two goals. While the Kelley-Rex division champions had long stretches where they had Walpole on its heels, the Porkers took advantage of their corners and strong goalkeeping to pull out a 4-2 win and advance to yet another D1 final.“They were nervous and uptight,” admitted Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “They were so tight in the first quarter and in between I was like, listen, you need to settle in. I tried to send them the message, yeah we’re playing Walpole but it’s just another game on our schedule. Them scoring that first goal kind of set the tone and made us think, uh oh here we go.”

HockomockSports.com: Player of the Week -> Raena Crandall, Franklin Field Hockey
"Franklin junior Raena Crandall has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 6 through Nov. 12. Crandall is the 10th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.
Crandall has four goals, including two game winners, and four assists during Franklin’s playoff run, as the Panthers have rolled into their second state semifinal in the past three seasons. The five-time defending Kelley-Rex champions have outscored their three playoff opponents 14-0, maintaining their unbeaten record (20-0-1) this fall. Crandall was second in the Hock in scoring during the regular season, just one point behind Foxboro’s Mary Collins.
“Raena Crandall is a player I am extremely honored to coach,” said Franklin head coach Michelle Hess. “Raena gives 110% effort and energy every single game and practice. She is tenacious… hard to defend due to her ability to mix up her shots, her stick skills, and her speed.”

FHS girls & boys soccer teams and field hockey teams win to advance to Quarterfinals
"With just under 16 minutes to go in Wednesday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game at Pisini Field, Algonquin stunned the home crowd with an equalizing goal. The Titans had been pushing and had Franklin on it heels, so it felt like a goal was coming but its arrival was still deflating. On the field, the Panthers were unfazed. They wasted no time regrouping and exactly a minute later they were right back in front.Anya Zub drove at the Algonquin defense, forcing the Titans to backpedal. Kelly O’Connor started on the left, cut across the defense, and made a run in front of Zub down the right channel. She got the pass on her right foot, took a quick look at the goalie, and angled a perfect shot past the keeper’s dive and into the side netting. It was the perfect, immediate response that Franklin needed and the Panthers rode that jolt of energy over the final 14 minutes, holding off Algonquin attacks and securing a 2-1 victory that sends them to the D1 quarterfinal."
"Franklin came into Wednesday afternoon’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game against Winchester at Beaver St. Field as the higher seed and the favorite. The Panthers wanted to get off to a good start, putting the visitors on their heels, and taking away any fears of an upset.Mission accomplished. The Panthers had 10 corners, forced Winchester goalie Molly Hillier into a dozen saves, and found the back of the net twice – all in the opening quarter. It was the perfect start to a dominating 6-0 win that sends Franklin back to the D1 quarterfinal for the third straight season.“They came together today,” Franklin coach Michelle Hess said. “Every single game they just keep getting better and better. They’re coming together as a team, they’re executing all the things that we’ve told them, they’re playing clean hockey."

FHS girls soccer, volleyball, and field hockey teams post wins vs. Attleboro on Monday
"The postseason doesn’t begin until late next week, but the Attleboro and Franklin boys soccer teams provided a preview of what’s to come on Monday night. The Bombardiers became the first team to take a lead on the Panthers this season on a goal in the 45th minute from sophomore Corvengdjimy Thomas but the hosts rallied for the equalizer in the 59th minute off of the foot of senior Gustavo Martinez to earn a draw 1-1 draw. With the result, Franklin stays one point ahead of Attleboro in the Kelley-Rex division with one game left apiece.“I was very happy with them,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. “That was the first time we’ve really faced that kind of adversity and they responded in a good way. I don’t like to tie, no one likes to tie, but we still control our own destiny. The best thing about tonight was that they found a way to come back, which is a good sign.”
"While Franklin was in position to win a sixth straight league title whether the Panthers won at Attleboro on Monday night or not, but beating the Bombardiers would seal the outright Kelley-Rex crown. It would be only the second time in this six-year run that Franklin sat alone atop the league standings and the Panthers weren’t in the mood to share that spot.Trailing Attleboro 2-1, with the Bombardiers on the verge of a season sweep and a share of the league title, Franklin found another gear. The Panthers held off the Bombardiers in the fourth set and carried the momentum into the fifth, jumping out a 10-0 lead and winning the decisive set in decisive fashion, 15-2, capping off a 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 22-25, 25-20, 15-2) victory.“We talked a lot about how sets one, two, and three weren’t the volleyball that we can play,” Franklin coach Samantha Redmond said. “It was trying to manage emotions, work together, and play like we can play. It took until the fourth set to play Franklin volleyball again.”Senior hitter Taylor Lacerda added, “Especially since we lost at home, we definitely wanted to come out strong. We knew they’d have a pretty big fanbase coming here. We wanted to show them who Franklin is and come out super strong.”
Panthers with good showing at sectionals but fall short on qualifying for states, finishing 6th out of 18CJ Steel shot an even par 72 & qualified for the individual bid to states next Monday.Liam Lewandowski & Tyler O'Brien 82,Caden Sullivan 85,Jack Nelson 86,Ben Paterson 95

FHS field hockey, volleyball, and golf teams post wins on Monday
"Two weeks ago, Franklin emerged from a hard-fought battle against Foxboro with a win, but head coach Michelle Hess admitted her squad was a bit nervous before the contest.
Fast forward nearly two weeks and Franklin has now boosted its résumé on top of the win over Foxboro: a victory on the road at Concord-Carlisle, a shutout over perennial league power Canton last week, and the latest addition a 3-0 win over Kelley-Rex division rival King Philip on Monday afternoon. It’s safe to say the Panthers are now ready to play in the big games.“I think this stretch has helped us learn to play in these types of games,” Hess said. “As a coach, you’re always waiting for that ‘aha!’ moment where everyone comes together and says we got this. Their confidence in each other has really grown lately. Staying positive has been a big focus of ours this year, and they’ve really bought into it. We’re at that moment now and everyone is gelling, all the way from the front to the back, everyone is on the same page."
WE ARE ON FIRE!! HUGE 3-0 WIN vs a fast & skilled KP Team!! Haley Wernig scored 2 incredible goals & Brooke Taylor added a nice deflection for our 3rd goal of the game! Addi Weiss, Haley Wernig & Raena Crandall had the assists. (1/3)Our defensive unit played amazing again today & Devon Barry had a career high 12 saves to help preserve the shut out!! Our Defensive corner unit (Sophia Cuneo, Lindsay Dennett, Maddie O’Brien & Ella Griffin) turned them away on 8 corners!! (2/3)Lindsay Dennett had 2 AMAZING defensive saves & Maddie O’Brien & Ella Griffin each also had an incredible defensive save! I am so proud of this total team effort!! These girls are just amazing! They work so hard from the front line all the way back to the last line of defense!
"After failing to close out late leads in each of the first two sets of Monday night’s showdown of defending league champs, King Philip was finally able to hold off Franklin in the third to stay alive in the match. Ryann O’Sullivan rose up and smashed the final point and the visitors had a little momentum on their side.
Sometimes, a team taking the third set can carry that energy over and suddenly the teams are in the fifth and a match that seemed in control could go either way. That wasn’t how it played out on Monday.Franklin jumped out to an early lead in the fourth and, while KP would get as close as two points at 10-8, pulled away to win the set comfortably, 25-16. With the 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) win, the Panthers swept the season series with KP and remained tied with Attleboro atop the Kelley-Rex division.“We’ve been really trying to work on not acting like we’ve won after set two,” Franklin coach Samantha Redmond explained. “All year our third sets have been our lowest, so it’s a lot of refocusing. KP is a great team, but we made a lot of errors, so just minimize that and everything hopefully will go okay.”
