"It Happens Here: Franklin The Home Of The First Public Library In America"

CBS Boston did a spot on Franklin recently:

"The oldest, continuously operating public library in America is in Franklin, a town that has its own theme song!
“The name of the town on the original paperwork is Exeter. Somewhere between leaving Franklin and arriving at the State House of Massachusetts in Boston, they crossed out the name Exeter and wrote in the name Franklin. So that is how we got our name, and we don’t know who did it,” says Vicki Earls, Head of Reference Services at the Franklin Public Library.
While we don’t know who did it, we do know why – to impress Benjamin Franklin, who had just gained support from France for the American Revolution. But the town expected Franklin to reciprocate.
“Someone got the idea, we don’t know, who of approaching Franklin and telling him the honor that was bestowed upon him, and would he want to contribute something to this newly founded town,” Earls explained. “They requested from Franklin a bell. They were building a new meeting house and a bell was crucially important because that’s how you gathered citizens.”

Rep Roy's recap of Franklin Historical Museum reopening

State Representative Jeff Roy writes:

"Delighted to be a part of the grand re-opening of the Franklin Historical Museum last week. The re-opening brought back to life our local laboratory for history and culture and offered residents a chance to see Franklin over the years since 1778.
It was also a treat to hear James Johnston describe the new federal parlor display and hear Jamie Barrett sing his ode to Davis Thayer (brief video included below). Check out the newly re-opened and expanded museum. Thank you Mary Olsson for making it all happen."

Ode To Davis Thayer (video) Composed by Jamie Barrett

"We say goodbye to Davis   later on today
I've offered up to sing a song   I don't know what to say
He's forever been a part of our Franklin families
Feel like I'm swimming in a flood of memories

He lived a good long life   almost a century
Started as a high school ended as elementary
So many came to him with a thirst for knowledge
So many left and went to work or away to college

Things keep changing that's what they say
And we don't miss nothing till it's gone away
But the truth will be here till we're old and grey
You can take away Davis… but in our hearts he'll always stay

He was our home for many a year
He's seen every burst of laughter and every tear
From the comical and crazy to the calm and the cool
And all of the excitement of a brand new day of school

Classrooms bursting with creativity
All staff and teachers feeding the kids curiosity
Amazing artwork and staying fit with ol' Phys Ed
And the Sound of Music keeps on playing in my head

Things keep changing that's what they say
And we don't miss nothing till it's gone away
But the truth will be here till we're old and grey
You can take away Davis… but in our hearts he'll always stay

And now the halls are empty and everything is silent
Once filled with an energy so vital and so vibrant
But as sure as that ol' church bell will chime
The DT door behind me closes one   last   time…"

THE BLACK BOX presents Jamie Barrett - July 9

THE BLACK BOX, the region’s premiere concert, theater, and event venue, has announced outdoor weekend concerts throughout the month of July in the theater’s parking lot. The shows will be presented in a one hour format with two seatings at 6:30 and 8:30 pm. Tables will be socially distanced and masks will be required when patrons enter THE BLACK BOX building to access the box office, restrooms, and bar. Table groupings will be limited to six.

Jamie Barrett will take the outdoor stage on Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 pm. This concert schedule is contingent upon Reopening Massachusetts Phase 3 beginning on July 6th. The box office for this show will open when the Phase 3 start date is officially announced by Governor Baker.

Jamie resides in Franklin, MA where he has been teaching music at Jefferson Elementary School since 1999. He also teaches one day a week at Davis Thayer Elementary, and he provides private guitar instruction after school, as well. His interest in music began with a very musical family and was then furthered by piano, singing, and clarinet lessons at a young age. He later discovered the guitar and went on to play in school productions and jazz bands and began gigging in night clubs. He went on to play in several bands throughout the New England area.

Good Morning!

Please enjoy our 2nd release of "FHS Keep Music Alive", featuring:

1 - Emma Kucich, Flute (Emma will be attending UMASS Amhurst in the fall to study Music)
"Hi! My name is Emma Kucich, and I am a senior at Franklin High. This is a piece I've started working on called 'Elegie' by Donjon. Hope you enjoy, and are staying safe and healthy!"
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JcJ6j7c3jnH7Y_X0bNaIf_Cr8ZRtLOvo/view?usp=sharing

2 - Jamie Barrett, Elementary Music Teacher @ Jefferson and Davis Thayer. "All the Time in the World"

"If you know me, then you know that I'm pretty much music 24-7... sometimes to the dismay of those around... I just can't turn it off... whether I like it or not, I constantly have music swirling around in my head... don't know if that's a good or a bad thing... maybe just a thing... and lately I've really been needing to capture it in one form or another...
If you like what you hear, maybe 'subscribe' to my YouTube channel (I'm trying to reach 1000!), and/or maybe share it by forwarding it to as many folks as humanly possible..."
