Franklin Art Association: April 2025 - Musings from the President

Dear members and friends,

I hope this message finds you in good spirits and bursting with creative energy as we welcome spring in New England. As we navigate an ever-changing and sometimes frightening world, I am reminded daily of the profound impact that art—your art—has on our lives, our communities, and our collective history.

As my presidency winds down, I am reminded of the fact that the FAA has been continuously providing art education and creative opportunities for over fifty years! This is no small accomplishment! Lots of organizations come and go, but the FAA has endured. And I attribute this to a committed membership with a strong volunteer base that continues to believe in the mission and goals of the FAA.
Franklin Art Association
Franklin Art Association

With the establishment of the Franklin Cultural District and its support of local arts, along with a town government that believes the arts are critical to a healthy vibrant community, the Franklin Art Association is well positioned to be a strong and vital part of the arts community for years to come. Who knows? Maybe we will someday be a foundational partner in a Town of Franklin Center for the Arts! May it be so!

As members of the FAA, I encourage you to continue exploring, innovating, and sharing your gifts. The importance of your creations cannot be overstated. They serve as beacons of inspiration and reminders of what it means to be alive. Thank you for your passion, your talent, and your unwavering commitment to the arts. Your work matters, and it has been my privilege to support and celebrate you.

Here’s to the next 50 years!

Warm regards,

Sue Sheridan
President

Franklin Art Association March meeting at Historical Museum features Christine West

The next Franklin Art Association meeting will take place at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, March 5 at the Franklin Historical Museum (Note: change in location), when our guest demonstrator will be artist Christine West.

Christine creates abstract paintings, monotypes, and mixed media collages using acrylic mediums, inks, photography and various papers. Christine writes: “I grew up painting and drawing alongside my father, a professional commercial artist. Although I chose a corporate career, he continued to tutor me and we spent much of my free time painting, drawing, and enjoying galleries and museums together. Upon my retirement, I realized that I longed to create art and have been pursuing education and experimentation in many mediums and styles.

“In 2015, I enrolled in an open studio format at the Holliston Mills where I focused on painting mid-century style cityscapes and abstract landscapes. Since 2017 to the present, under the instruction of Paula DeSimone, I have undertaken formal study of painting with acrylics, glazing and layering techniques, monoprinting, collage construction, and drawing. My artistic experimentation and development continues under Paula's instruction at The Danforth Art Museum, part of Framingham State University.

“My work can be seen at True Grit Art Gallery in Middleboro MA, where I have been a resident artist since 2020. Additionally, I have exhibited in juried shows throughout Massachusetts as well as "member" shows including Attleboro Arts Museum, Hopkinton Art Center, and Morini Gallery. “

FAA meetings are always free and open to the public.

Franklin Art Association features Guest Demo-Artist, Erin Spencer - Feb 5

The Franklin Art Association invites the public to our Wednesday, February 5 meeting. We will warmly greet Guest Demo-Artist, Erin Spencer, our landscape, oil painter for this month’s public demonstration. She will be giving a step by step demonstration for a fine art painting.

Erin will discuss how to ‘simplify’ your approach. Like making a poem, in her approach she looks at painting as distilling visual information made into a unique interpretation; offering a new insight. The finished work tends toward realism mixed with tonalism.

Franklin Art Association will sponsor a Collage Workshop by Lenny Moskowitz - Dec 7

On Saturday, December 7 the Franklin Art Association will sponsor a Collage Workshop by Lenny Moskowitz

Lenny received his B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art and his M.F.A. from Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy. He has taught at Quinnipiac University for 15 years, at various art centers in New England and has been an artist in residence in several places, including Weir Farm in Wilton, Connecticut, the Anderson Center in Minnesota, and the Art Association of Nantucket. He also exhibits his work widely.

Through demonstrations and individual guidance students of all levels will be introduced to using collage as a means of exploring landscape, still life, or abstraction. It is designed to simplify the creation of subjects by transforming them into large shapes and simple areas of value and color. We will work with magazine pages collected for color.

Students will need to bring scissors, sketchpad, pencils, charcoal, magazines, glue or glue stick, necessary painting materials, etc. Acrylic painters also will need a spray water bottle. An acrylic matte medium is recommended.

The workshop will take place at Franklin TV, 23 Hutchinson St, Franklin on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 am–3:30 pm. The fee is $65.

To register, contact Susan Plume at susan_plume@yahoo.com or text 508-846-2589 and send a check payable to FAA to: Treasurer, Franklin Art Association, 279 East Central St., PO 289, Franklin, MA 02028
