Pan-Mass Challenge rides this weekend, water stop at Remington Saturday morning

The Remington Jefferson School is a water stop for the 2-day riders. It has a reputation for being one of the better water stops on the route. The riders tend to arrive between 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Saturday morning, Aug 6.

PanMass Challenge rides through Franklin Aug 4

In the build up to the PanMass Challenge which is scheduled for Aug 4-5, the Milford Daily News will be sharing profiles of local riders.

Representative Jeff Roy appears in this issue
http://www.milforddailynews.com/news/20180722/pan-mass-challenge-profile-state-rep-roy-rides-for-his-late-colleagues

I know of several riders from the area and my work connections who are riding in this worthy event. You can contribute to the fund raising online at

Franklin also is a rest stop for riders on the route from Sturbridge to Provincetown. If you have a chance to get to the Remington Jefferson School complex on Saturday morning, Aug 4, the early riders usually start coming in about 7 AM and then the peak is usually between 8 and 10. It is quite an experience!

The Pan Mass Challenge rides through Franklin

The PanMass Challenge will ride through Franklin Saturday morning. Back in January, I received this email from Martin Middelman, a regular reader of Franklin Matters. Hundreds of riders have been training for months for this weekend fund raising effort. Martin will be joined in this ride by Town Administrator Jeff Nutting, State Representative Jeff Roy and several other Franklin riders.

In a time when the TV shows negative news, it is heartening to see so many folks taking action for a worthy cause. Cancer touches all of us, directly or indirectly. Is there a person who hasn't lost a family member to this? Or doesn't know someone struggling with it?

Get up early Saturday morning and head to the Remington Jefferson School to see the riders come in. The school grounds serve as a water and rest stop on the ride.

Cheer them on!

Be encouraged by so many taking action!

Contribute to the cause.

"There is a lot riding on this!"

Riders

There's a Lot Riding on This

Dear friends,

Today I've committed to raising money for cancer research by riding in the 2013 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). On the first weekend in August, I will join 5,500 cyclists in the PMC ride, an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI) in Boston.

I hope I can count on your support

The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country, $375 million since 1980 and $37 million last year alone! This success is the result of a lot of people riding for, and caring about, a cure. And because every penny matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to DFCI.

I've made a personal commitment to ride and raise $4,300. So I hope you can help me achieve this significant goal.

Please donate to my PMC ride at one of the following links:

Click here to make a $50 donation
Click here to make a $100 donation
Click here to make a $250 donation

Every donation brings us closer by the mile.

Thank you,
Martin Middelmann

Your donation is tax deductible and 100% will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. If you prefer to write a check, please make it out to the PMC, The Jimmy Fund or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and mail it to me directly at:

The PMC rides through Franklin on Saturday, Aug 6

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"During its 36-year run, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised more than a half-billion dollars to combat cancer - a feat likely far greater than Billy Starr, its founder and executive director, and dozens of friends would have expected when they started the annual bike ride in 1980.
On Aug. 6 and 7, more than 200 locals from MetroWest are set to participate in the largest single athletic fundraiser in the country, according to PMC organizers.
The two-day biking event raises money for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor, raising more than 58 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue."

Franklin PMC Kids Ride planned - June 10

Are you looking for a fun event to do with your children while coming together as a community to help fight cancer? Come join Franklin's 12th annual PMC Kids Ride being held on Sunday, June 10. The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be one of more than 35 PMC Kids Rides throughout the New England area.

Last year, the Franklin ride attracted over 250 young cyclists between the ages of 3 and 14, who rode between 3 and 10 miles. The ride exceeded their fundraising goal and raised more than $55,000 for cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The ride offers a way for children to become part of the PMC mission by involving them in volunteerism and fundraising in a safe and athletic way.

The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be held on Sunday, June 10 from 8 AM to 12 PM, and will start and end at the Remington/Jefferson School, 628 Washington Street in Franklin. Kids can select from a 3, 6 or 10-mile course. Younger participants not yet on 2 wheels can take part in the Tikes and Trikes course in a contained area at the school.

There is a $10 registration fee and a $30 fundraising minimum. There will be a party after the ride, with music, games, food, face painting and more.

Register on line at http://www.kids.pmc.org/franklin.aspx. All local communities are encouraged to participate.

PMC - Franklin Water Stop

The Pan Mass Challenge had a water stop this morning at the Remington/Jefferson School on Washington St. It was quite a colorful and festive affair. One rider after pulling over to catch her breath, asked what town she was in. When my wife and I answered, Franklin. She responded; "Oh Franklin, yes, you're a great water stop!"

Here are some pictures of the riders and greeters today:

May the road be kind to all the riders today, and may the wind be at your back!

PanMass Challenge rides through Franklin Saturday

The Remington Jefferson School complex will be busy Saturday morning. The site is a rest stop on the course for the PanMass Challenge. Hundreds of bike riders will roll through, take a quick break, some refreshments, pose for pictures with friends and family and ride on!

Slide show of photos from 2009:

The site lays out the purpose of the PMC in plain words - "When cyclists register for the PMC, they are signing up for a fundraising mission first and a bike ride second. ... Raising money for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is the core of the PMC mission."
"We're remaining true to the mission," said Starr.
---
Riders settle into their own methods of raising money. Most send out letters each year, via email and the Postal Service, but their recipients vary from 50 people who give much, to 200 people who give what they can. Some letters are personalized, some are identical form letters. Some have heart-wrenching stories, while others simply remind loyal followers that it's the time of year to give again.
To donate to any of the riders or teams in the PMC, check pmc.org and plug a name or team into the search bar.

In the News: beavers at DelCarte, PMC rides through Franklin

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Local officials are weighing what to do with a colony of beavers whose natural handiwork threatens an earthen berm at DelCarte Reservation off Pleasant Street.
An expert from ESS Group, an environmental engineering firm, walked around the ponds and other parts of the reservation on April 7 looking for signs of beaver busywork. After discovering that the critters were indeed making themselves at home, ESS installed a motion-activated camera for 13 days.
Four beaver lodges were found along the shoreline, two of which appear to be in use. One dam in the area is blocking water flow from the upper basin to the southern basin. The dam is flooding trees near a berm on the upper basin, or pond, according to an ESS study. That could be a problem if the berm continues to flood."

"Thousands of bike tires will meet with hundreds of miles of pavement across Massachusetts during the 38th annual Pan Mass Challenge this weekend.
The ride starts tomorrow and continues until Sunday – Over 6,000 cyclists from eight different countries gathered in Massachusetts for the bike race this year. The ride will begin on 5:30 a.m on Saturday and on Sunday and go until 7 p.m.
The Pan Mass Challenge, or PMC, is a fundraiser for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. To date, PMC has raised almost $550 million for early-cancer research. The PMC raises more money than any other athletic fundraiser in the country.
There will be water stops for cyclists in Franklin, Wrentham, Foxbourough, Whitinsville, and Wellesley. The stops are known to cause car traffic, as hundreds on cyclists will be making their way down dozens of the area roads.

FM #45 - Summer Recap

This is FM #45, a recap of the summer months July/August. Give me about 10 minutes and I'll let you know what matters in Franklin MA.

Time: 11 minutes, 25 seconds

MP3 File

Session Notes:

This is #45 in the series for Franklin Matters. Give me about 10 minutes and I'll let you what matters in Franklin, MA.

June came, school ended, you left Franklin for your summer respite. Hopefully you had a good time away.

It is the end of August and you're back in Franklin. School begins on Tuesday, September 1. Oh my, how time does fly! Perhaps you're wondering what happened while you were away.

If you were, I think the highlights would be covered by the following recap:

July

Jul 1 - The Town Council meeting was dominated by a presentation and discussion by the Charter Commission. The Council created a sub-committee to work on bringing the language of the report into something to put before the State Legislature who could approve it. With their approval, then the folks of Franklin would have a chance to vote on the changes proposed. One of the changes was to make the Treasurer's position an appointed one (instead of elected as it is today). The current Town Clerk position would remain an elected position (although the committee did make some valid arguments for making this an appointed position as well). What seemed to be the most controversial was the discussion on moving the Town Council to staggered terms. In the end because the Charter Commission could not come up with an agreement on how to implement it, they decided it wasn't necessary. Keep this on the radar. I believe the Town Council would still have to approve the final submission to the State Legislature when the sub-committee has done their work.
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/town-council-mtg-070109.html

Jul 15 - The Town Council meeting was significant in that museum renovation funding was approved and the local meal and hotel tax options now offered by the State were approved. This is the first non-property tax revenue that has become available for the Town. It is estimated to raise about 1 million dollars for a full year. We won't be realize the full amount this first year but it will help going forward. Vallee was the only councilor voting against both measures. He had argued previously for enabling a revenue stream for the Town but in the end voted against as it was the wrong thing to do with the current economic conditions. The Dept of Planning and Community Development presentation is worth viewing. The presentation on the Water situation is also worth viewing. Approval of the funding for the museum was controversial, some arguing it was not a good time. In the end, because it was a good time to get the work done cheaply, the money was approved by a 7-1 vote (that Bartlett was the one voting against was a surprise).
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/town-council-mtg-smry-071509.html

Jul 16 - Shades N Place opened it's new showroom
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-do-you-go-from-stained-glass-to.html

Jul 16 - Third Thursday was held downtown
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-do-you-go-from-stained-glass-to.html

Jul 22 - The School Committee meeting left some questions unanswered. We left the Jun 23rd meeting with 60+ teachers notified and yet the final number ended up as 12 (all the librarians and a few others). How did we get there? I caught up with Jeff Roy to help figure out where I had missed the boat in following the numbers through the budget discussion.

The full School Committee meeting notes can be found here

Jul 27 - The Summer School art show was captured in a slide show
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/summer-art-institute-slide-show.html

Jul 31 - Yes, it is an election year this time around for Franklin. We will elect a Town Council, School Committee and sundry other positions this November. The full listing and key dates can be found here. There are still open slots for Town Council as four have been confirmed in taking out papers to run (incumbents Vallee, Mason, Pfeffer and new comer Glenn Jones). Tom Doak has acknowledged that he will not seek re-election.
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/07/this-is-election-year-for-franklin.html

August

Aug 1 - The PanMass Challenge rode through Franklin with a water stop at the Remington-Jefferson complex. A slide show of some of the event featuring local riders can be found here
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/08/pmc-franklin-water-stop.html

Aug 5 - The Town Council meeting was barely held as five councilors were present, just enough for a quorum. The only legislation passed was local ordinances that allowed the Board of Assessors to index the Senior exemptions officially. They had in fact been indexing but due to a change in legislation, the local authorization to do so had not officially been granted.
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/08/town-council-mtg-smry-080509.html

Aug 11 - The School Committee meeting approved the recommendations from the Strategic Planning Committee. The School Department is now operating under an updated mission statement, vision, and core values. School handbooks dominated much of the discussion as they reflect some changes to bring some more consistency to the operations of the individual schools.
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/08/school-committee-mtg-081109.html

Changes at the high school are covered in detail on Principal Peter Light's blog
http://franklinhighschool.wordpress.com/2009/07/31/fhs-update-and-amendment-to-the-program-of-studies/

Aug 19 - The Town Council was a shorter meeting than the one on the 5th with a skinny agenda. Only two councilors were missing.
http://franklinmatters.blogspot.com/2009/08/town-council-mtg-smry-081909.html

Aug 19 - With a short Council meeting, I was able to attend and record notes for the Franklin Citizens Rail Trail Committee meeting. This committee is working to enhance the portion of the SNETT that starts in Franklin and runs through to the Douglas State forest.

Aug 25 - The second School Committee meeting of the month had some interesting policy discussions. The School's Legal representation was present for the discussion on the electronic use policy revisions proposed. Bottom line, there is more work to be done to bring the wording into agreement with the intent of the group. The initial District Improvement Plan was presented for review and ultimately accepted. The District Improvement Plan document is available within the meeting notes. Renee Danho, from Dean College, introduced a new program to help foster the collaboration between the School District and Dean. The presentation copy is available within the meeting notes.

Around town you may have noticed that the Four Corners building is gone and work is well underway on the new Walgreens. The new turn lanes were added to the intersection of King/140 (or East Central)
