Patriots, Public Safety Officials Throw Danny Nickerson a Surprise Birthday Party Unlike Any Other
It started with a simple wish for birthday cards a week before his sixth birthday and ended with a birthday celebration unlike any other at Patriot Place and Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 26.
Danny Nickerson, a Foxborough boy with an inoperable brain tumor, celebrated his sixth birthday on Friday, July 25, with a trip to Legoland in Boston before meeting New England Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft at Gillette Stadium.

During the visit, Danny and his family toured the Patriots’ trophy room before taking a walk onto the Gillette Stadium field, where they were greeted by Pat Patriot, the team’s official mascot, and Patriots Cheerleaders.
“We got out on the field and Danny’s name was up on the video boards, which was absolutely awesome,” said Daniel Jamieson, Danny’s father. “I never thought one of my family member’s names would be up on the video board in Gillette Stadium.”

“Seeing Danny smile so much has been amazing,” said Jamieson. “Everything Mr. Kraft and the Kraft family have done to help out my family and show support for my son is incredible.”
The show of support for Danny didn’t stop there, as Cops for Kids with Cancer organized a surprise birthday party for the six-year-old and his family at Patriot Place and Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 26.
“Hopefully this helps Danny and his family know they aren’t alone,” said Burlington Police Sgt. Gerard McDonough, one of the organizers of Saturday’s event. “I’ve read that Danny can feel alone and sad at times, so we want the family to know they are not alone and they are not fighting alone.”

Danny’s special day began with a convoy of more than 100 police, fire and EMS vehicles arriving at Gillette Stadium shortly before 9 a.m. Hundreds of public safety officials representing more than 40 communities throughout the region then gathered on the steps of Patriot Place’s grand staircase to sing “Happy Birthday” to the guest of honor.
“Seeing all the police, firefighters and motorcycle riders showing up to support my son is absolutely emotional and really nice,” said Jamieson.
The celebration continued on the first floor of CBS Scene with a public safety-themed birthday cake that featured a photo of Danny on a motorcycle and a presentation of birthday cards and gifts from each agency, including a motorized toy police car from Boston Police, which Danny drove around NRG Plaza until the power ran out.
“It’s been an incredible and emotional day,” said Canton Police Deputy Chief Helena Rafferty, who also serves as President of Cops for Kids with Cancer. “Every little boy loves police and fire and it is such an honor to be part of this special day.”
Foxborough police officer Stephen McGrath said participating in Saturday’s celebration was important to the department because Danny is a relative of one of their sergeants.
“We knew that participating today would be just one way to demonstrate our support to Danny and his family, and also to our sergeant,” said McGrath. “I know how important it is to them and I think they need to know not only the Foxborough Police Department is behind them, but the support extends throughout law enforcement and communities across the region. This event brings everything into focus for us and we are honored to be a part of it.”
After cake and presents at CBS Scene, the party moved to Patriots Training Camp where another surprise was waiting for Danny.
Toward the end of practice, Kraft invited Danny and his parents onto the field where the entire team, including head coach Bill Belichick, gathered around the Foxborough family and sang “Happy Birthday” to Danny.
“It’s been an incredible day for Danny and the Patriots singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to my son was a real touching moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” said Jamieson.
Danny’s mother, Carley Nickerson, was equally grateful for all the support her family has received since making a public request for birthday cards for her son.
“It’s overwhelming,” Carley said. “Everyone has been amazing. They’ve all come together and are here for our little boy.”
Danny has received more than 150,000 birthday cards in the 10 days since his wish was made public. Some cards have been sent from as far away as Japan, and mail is still coming in.
“It’s been amazing to see him so happy,” said Carley. “He loves getting mail.”
For Sgt. McDonough and Cops for Kids with Cancer, the goal for Saturday was a simple one – make Danny and his family smile.
“As long as Danny was smiling and we gave the family some happy memories it was mission accomplished for us,” said McDonough. “We are very grateful to the Kraft family and the Patriots organization for giving us the venue to be able to do this and we were very happy for the show of support to Danny and thank all the officers who were able to come out.”

Fund raising weekend for cancer (photo essay)
As much as cancer is an insidious disease, it is heartening to see the community turn out to support fund raising efforts. There were two separate fund raisers this past weekend. (1) The Relay for Life held at Tri-County Voc Tech and (2) the PMC Kids Ride at the Jefferson School.
Friday evening, we were able to walk between the showers. My wife participated as part of the Oak St Team.
The sun was out and the weather was good for walking and biking Sunday morning. We walked over to the Jefferson School to see the start of the PMC Kids Ride.
Donations are likely still welcomed for either the Relay for Life or the PMC Kids Rides

Relay for Life - Jun 13-14 at Tri-County
The Relay for Life is happening this Friday and Saturday at the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical School. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Friday with the closing at 10:00 AM on Saturday.

Noah's Ninjas...Kicking Cancer in the Butt!
Hello! My name is Rosalyn Smith. My little brother, Noah Smith, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer the week of January 13th. This was a big change for everyone.
Noah is being treated at Jimmy fund Clinic and is doing very well. The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber treats pediatric oncology outpatients and through a unique collaboration, Jimmy Fund Clinic patients receive inpatient care when needed at nearby Boston Children's Hospital.
We have been so grateful for all the dinners made, the cards, and the gifts were just astonishing. A lot of people want to help and this is a perfect opportunity for kids and adults (Noah's friends or mine or even anyone else) to show their support to Noah.

Bekah Redwine's "Bear Mitzvah" Project
Julia Redwine sent me an email with this message: "I wanted to share a special story that I thought may warm your readers' hearts."
A year ago July, a very special family friend of ours, seven year old Alexandra Pacher, lost her battle with leukemia. As one can only imagine, this was extremely heart breaking for Alexandra's family, friends, and our Franklin, MA community where Alexandra, her parents and dog Franklin lived.
Our daughter Rebekah was one who was very much affected by Alexandra's passing. Bekah and Alexandra were not close friends but had spent some time together over the years and for Bekah, it was just unfathomable that anyone so young would not only have cancer, but worse, pass away from such an unfair and cruel disease. Soon after Alexandra's passing, Bekah asked in honor of her own Bat Mitzvah which was coming the following June (June 22, 2013) if she could take on a special project in memory of Alexandra. At our temple, a large "mitzvah" project is not required for preparation of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah but Bekah wanted to do this in addition to the responsibilities that were actually required at our synagogue leading up to her special day - Alexandra's passing really affected her.
Bekah decided to sew 54 bears (18 in the Jewish religion is "chai" and means life - so triple chai is 54) in Alexandra's memory. Bekah spent the next 11 months sewing, stuffing and adding eyes, noses and bows to these cuddly critters. Alexandra's favorite colors were pink and blue so Bekah decided to tie these colored ribbons around the bears necks so that they can be given to boys and girls alike.
Yesterday Bekah, along with Alexandra's mother, Tamara Pacher brought the 54 bears to the MGH clinic where Alexandra sadly spent a lot of time receiving treatments. Bekah and Tamara visited one of the pediatric inpatient floor as well to continue handing out these special bears. Next year our family is planning a trip to Israel and Bekah's intention is to sew and stuff an additional 54 bears over the next year and deliver them to a hospital there as well.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month so not only does Bekah hope that these bears bring some comfort to the children at MGH and want them to know she is thinking of them, but to also spread the word of how important it is to continue the commitment to fighting childhood cancer.

Relay for life
Cancer touches so many folks directly or indirectly. If it is not a family member, it is a friend, neighbor or work colleague that is affected by the disease. The Relay for Life was held Friday/Saturday on the track at Tri-County Regional to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause.
The heavy rain overnight Thursday in to Friday cleared as forecasted to bring bright blue skies and comfortable temperatures.
For those staying over night to walk, it should have been a nice evening.
When a number of people come together around a cause, there is hope!

Rose Constantino - Race for the Cure
More than 5,000 people participated in the 20th Annual Komen Massachusetts Race for the Cure® on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Joe Moakley Park in South Boston including Franklin resident, Rose Constantino.
The event, presented by the Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, was the culmination of Komen MA’s activities during October which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Race is a 5K fitness walk/run dedicated to raising dollars to support local breast health programs that cover education, prevention, screening, and treatment while also funding the most promising research on a national level.

"worth every bit of effort we put in"
On Saturday, about 2,700 bikers began the longest route of the Pan-Mass Challenge, 192-mile Sturbridge to Provincetown, in the pre-dawn fog. They will rest up in Bourne Saturday night before climbing on their bikes again early Sunday morning.
In all, thousands of cyclists will have traveled through Sutton, Northbridge, Uxbridge, Mendon, Bellingham, Franklin, Wrentham, Plainville, Foxborough and Norfolk by Saturday evening.
Since 1980, the bike-a-thon has, through the Jimmy Fund, raised $338 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Last year, the PMC raised $35 million, and this year’s goal is $36 million.

Riding for a cause

When Rick Tobin heard about his brother-in-law's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, the Franklin resident was completely lost. Tobin felt obligated to help. But what could he do? The question bedeviled him for a long time before he finally found his answer last year in the form of a three-day, 270-mile charity bike ride from Boston to Greenwich, Conn.
