Tracy Grammer with Jim Henry at OCC Coffeehouse Jan. 11

TRACY GRAMMER is one of contemporary folk music's most beloved artists. Renowned for her springwater-clear alto, perfectly intoned violin, and guitar playing that is by turns percussive and delicate, Grammer is also a gifted storyteller whose incantations add a rare mixture of vulnerability, intimacy, and hard-won insight to her performances. As one fan puts it, "With Tracy, it's never just about the music; it's a soul journey."

And what a journey it has been. Grammer rose to acclaim as half of the "postmodern, mythic American folk" duo, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. From 1998-2001, the duo released three internationally celebrated, chart-topping albums featuring Carter's mytho-poetic Americana songcraft and in 2002, toured with Joan Baez, both as featured artists and Baez's bandmates. Called "the new voice of modern folk music," the duo was clearly in its ascendancy when in July, 2002, Carter suffered a fatal heart attack mid-tour. He was 49; Grammer, 34.

Tracy Grammer "Low Tide" album cover image

Grammer is currently on tour celebrating the release of LOW TIDE, her first album of original songs. "I've been a writer all my life, but it was never my intention to be a songwriter," she says. "However, the road has curves we can't see at the outset of the journey. At some point along the path, writing songs became the most effective medicine for the pains and unresolved questions of my life. LOW TIDE is an album of revelations, confessions, and ultimately, healing. I am proud of the writing and utterly thrilled with the sounds. I took risks. I tried new approaches. I told the truth, and delivered my multitudes. My eleventh album is the first one that really sounds like me." Co-produced with long-time touring partner Jim Henry, LOW TIDE was released January 19, 2018 on Grammer's own label, Tracy Grammer Music, and is available through Fish Records in the U.K.

It's hard to know where to start when describing Jim Henry. He does a lot of things and he does them well. As a sideman, on a variety of electric or acoustic guitars, or on mandolin or dobro, Jim can render emotional sensitivity in one moment then tear into a rock or country solo with such fire it's hard to catch your breath. He is a master of adding whatever is needed at any musical moment. At center stage, whether as a solo artist or leading a band, Jim delivers his finely crafted original songs with a smooth, rich baritone voice and engaging storytelling and humor.

Tickets for the concert are $20, available at the church office, 508-384-3110, or at https://www.musicatocc.org/. The event will be in Fellowship Hall at the back of the church with entry from the parking lot behind the church. Parking is available behind the church and in the lot across the street.

Pamela Means
November 16 - 8 PM - $20
Peter Mulvey is an amazing songwriter and singer, an extremely entertaining storyteller, and a guitar wizard. He is returning to The Circle of Friends Coffeehouse stage in Franklin on Saturday November 16th, at 8PM. He has developed a strong national following in the indie folk/rock scene through his relentless touring and critically acclaimed albums.  Twenty-odd years on the road, performing songs from his own catalog and from a vast, varied, and deep well of classic and obscure covers, has prepared Mulvey to deliver an outstanding concert. Night after night, the process of divining the heart of a song, being alert to where the moment can lead, has shaped him as an artist. To each rendition, he brings the soul of a singer, a light touch in a heavy world.  http://www.petermulvey.com/

"Peter Mulvey is all substance, which is his style." - The Boston Globe

Opening the show will be Pamela Means, a singer-songwriter and jazz musician, with "mad guitar-and-vocal skills" (Time Out New York) who has toured throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, winning awards, delighting audiences and impressing critics with her seven independent releases. With virtuosic musicianship, razor wit and a disarming sense of humor, Pamela Means is building a vibrant and remarkable career.  http://www.pamelameans.com/

Addition to The Brothers Four Concert at OCC Coffeehouse on Nov. 8

"We have a new development with The Brothers Four concert. A very popular local group, The McGuire Brothers, will be opening for them. The McGuire Brothers consist of Mike and Sean McGuire on acoustic guitars and drummer Dean Winslow, playing a mix of covers from the 1940s to the present. Many people in the Wrentham area have enjoyed the McGuires for years, and we expect you will too."

50 Great Years! Now proudly celebrating their Golden Anniversary! The smooth musical sounds of The Brothers Four have delighted millions for five exciting decades. Folk Songs and Love Songs from America, Europe, Africa and Asia round out a fabulous repertoire of acoustic tunes old and new.

The Brothers Four have played thousands of college concerts, serenaded four U.S. presidents at the White House, appeared at countless Community Concerts, performed with symphony orchestras and jazz stars and entertained in dozens of foreign countries. Internationally acclaimed, they are truly "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World." Musical million-sellers for The Brothers Four include such releases as Greenfields, Yellow Bird, Try to Remember, Across the Wide Missouri. Their hit recording of The Green Leaves of Summer from the motion picture "The Alamo" was nominated for an Academy Award and they performed the song at the awards presentation for the global network telecast.

Fraternity brothers at the University of Washington in Seattle, The Brothers Four began singing together in 1956 and by the 1960s they had become America's Musical Ambassadors to the World. They were pioneers in the musical movement which came to be know as the "folk revival", and of the few groups from those times still performing today, they remain one of the best known and most popular. Their all-acoustic presentation consists of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and of course the trademark rich blend of their four voices. An evening with this quartet is an unforgettable time of pure, acoustic music and entertainment.

The full-time lineup of The Brothers Four, as solid as ever, now includes Mike McCoy, a veteran folk performer and singer/songwriter, a native of Washington State who has performed with The Brothers Four on special recording projects and occasional stage presentations since the late 1960's; Washington native, Karl Olsen, folk performer, choral director, writer and arranger, the latest addition to the group, blending his sparkling vocal and guitar skills smoothly into the sound of The Brothers Four; Washington State's Mark Pearson, guitarist, banjo player extraordinaire and singer/songwriter who has been such a strong and consistent part of the Group's signature sound since he originally joined in the late 1960's; along with Founding Member, Seattle native, Bob Flick, bass player, group leader and singer/songwriter.

Tickets for the concert are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, available at the church office, 508-384-3110, or at www.musicatocc.org. Molsky's Mountain Drifters in Foxboro this Sunday, Oct 20

MOLSKY'S MOUNTAIN DRIFTERS
at Orpheum Theatre
Sunday, Oct. 20, 7:30 PM

Molsky's Mountain Drifters packs a punch with three of the most captivating performers in the most recent generation of Old-Time and American Roots music. The band features Bruce Molsky, (Grammy nominated, revered Old-Time music ambassador and Berklee College of Music Visiting Scholar) along with guitar genre bender Stash Wyslouch (of the Deadly Gentlemen) on guitar and vocals, and master of the clawhammer banjo, Allison de Groot (of The Goodbye Girls).

Bruce Molsky, "one of America's premier fiddling talents" (Mother Jones) and Grammy-nominated artist on fiddle, banjo, guitar and song is delighted to present his new group already on tour in the US. Bruce's previous collaborations, with Anonymous 4, 1865 – Songs of Hope and Home from the American Civil War, was released to rave reviews and was on the top 10 Billboard charts for weeks. He is also a special guest on legendary guitarist Mark Knopfler's latest CD, Tracker and is working on his 3rd album with Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny's supergroup Mozaik. You can also hear Bruce on BBC TV Transatlantic Sessions singing with Joan Osborne, Julie Fowlis and fiddling with Scottish legend Aly Bain and America's great dobroist Jerry Douglas. Bruce is also Berklee College of Music's Visiting Scholar in the American Roots Program.

Stash Wyslouch is one of bluegrasss great young genre-bending pioneers, a brilliant and free-thinking mind (Chris Eldridge, Punch Brothers). Coming over from the punk-metal world, Stash brings great sensitivity and real emotion to the trio, plus superb guitar and vocal chops.

Allison de Groot combines wide ranging virtuosity and passion for old-time music. With her own bands The Goodbye Girls and Oh My Darling, she has played Trafalgar Square in London, Newport Folk Festival, Stockholm Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and Tønder Festival in Denmark. Like Bruce, Allison loves collaborating and bringing new ideas to old music, and brings a fresh approach to the trio.

GARNET ROGERS at the OCC Coffeehouse - Oct 4

Garnet Rogers is a great performer. Don't miss this concert in Fellowship Hall at the back of the church. Tickets are available in the church office or on the concert website. And take note of the other great concerts later in October and in November.

Since then, Garnet Rogers has been called ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful.

Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humor and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, available at the church office, 508-384-3110, or at www.musicatocc.org. The event will be in Fellowship Hall at the back of the church with entry from the parking lot behind the church. Parking is available behind the church and in the lot across the street. Circle of Friends Coffeehouse: Ellis Paul - Sep 21 with Rachael Kilgour
ELLIS PAUL
with special guest Rachael Kilgour
September 21  -  8 PM - $30
Ellis Paul returns to the Circle of Friends Coffeehouse on Saturday, September 21st.  Ellis is one of the most significant stars in the modern history of folk music. He is a critically-acclaimed singer, songwriter, poet, and troubadour originally hailing from a potato farming family in northern Maine. He is the recipient of fifteen Boston Music Awards, second only to multi-platinum act, Aerosmith. Over the course of twenty years, Ellis Paul has built a vast catalog of music which weds striking poetic imagery and philosophical introspection with hook-laden melodies. He has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers. http://www.ellispaul.com/

His music has been shared with a wider audience as well, through commercials, documentaries, TV shows and in the soundtracks of several blockbuster films, among them three by the Farrelly Brothers -- "Hall Pass" (starring Owen Wilson and Alyssa Milano), "Me, Myself, & Irene" (starring Jim Carrey) and "Shallow Hal" (starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow). Peter Farrelly summed up the sentiments of all those who have come to know and appreciate Paul's music by referring to him as "a national treasure."

"Ellis Paul is a master storyteller. He combines the sensibilities of Bob Dylan and Bill Morrissey and delivers it with a passion that sets him apart in the company of a new breed of songwriters."
- Performing Songwriter Magazine

"Despite his success and sense of history, Mr. Paul remains an artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential in his music." - The New York Times
Rachael Kilgour
Award winning songwriter and performer Rachael Kilgour will be Ellis' special guest. https://www.rachaelkilgour.com/
