Representative Roy and Senator Ross welcome Franklin Students to State House

Boston – Representative Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin) and Senator Richard Ross (R-Wrentham) welcomed eighth graders from Franklin's Horace Mann Middle School Teen leadership and Communication class yesterday to the State House.

These HMMS Leadership students enrolled in an extra course, on top of their normal workload to consider and address an authentic, real-world problem in their community. Through peer collaboration and feedback these students had to create a PSA outlining their topic and solution. On May 7th the HMMS 8th graders presented their projects at the 2nd annual PSA Symposium in Horace Mann middle School's Mercer Auditorium to an audience made up of parents, teachers and peers.

"These students embody all of the great work of our Franklin schools and teachers," said Senator Ross. "Their dedication and creativity is truly inspiring and I value every opportunity to have them take part in civil service and give back to their community."

During their visit of the State House the HMMS Leadership students met with various State Legislators, had the opportunity to witness a joint House of Representatives and Senate event commemorating the 50th anniversary of UMass Boston and had an opportunity to share their future plans with their Legislators.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with these student leaders and provide them with a glimpse of the work at the State House", said Representative Jeffrey N. Roy (D- Franklin) "When I met them a few weeks ago to observe their public service presentations in Franklin, I was impressed with their dedication, commitment and compassion. They took on extra course loads, worked with members of the community, and tackled issues designed to make the world a better place. I was happy to recognize their achievements and show them the work we do at the state level."

Please contact the office of Representative Roy with any questions or concerns at (617) 722-2400 or Jeffrey.Roy@MAhouse.gov

Continuing to share photos from the last tour of Franklin High School, here are some from the corridors and the art work found above the locker space. The student work on these murals is a delight. I tried to capture them all. There are many more photos to be shared.

A Walking Tour of the Civilian Conservation Camp at Upton State Forest

Upton State Forest, Westboro Road, Upton, MA

walkabout-upton-2014
It was the "worse, hard time" ever - The Great Depression, thousands out of work and a nation in despair. Yet, America has always been a place where new ideas and new ways of thinking have gained traction. As a way to deal with the huge unemployment rolls and a despairing nation, Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it changed everything.

Join Ranger Chuck Arning and Ellen Arnold, Friends of Upton State Forest, for a tour of one of the few remaining CCC camp sites and learn how these young men put their mark on the America we know today.

Parking: Park right by the camp inside Upton State Forest. Take the Westboro Road off the Hopkinton Street by Pratt Pond. Follow Westboro Road to park on right.

(through August 28).

The success of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor has always been due, in large part, to public support and active participation by the people and communities of the Blackstone Valley.
People like you!

For more than 25 years, the people of the valley have shared in rediscovering their roots, their heritage and their common identity. They have supported the Corridor by speaking or writing to their elected officials, by showing up at public events, and by participating in numerous projects and programs.

BRVNHC

About the Blackstone Heritage Corridor
Congress established the National Heritage Corridor in 1986 to restore and preserve the nationally significant heritage of the Blackstone River Valley, where the industrialization of America began. It has become a successful program of partnerships between federal, state and local government agencies, as well as nongovernment organizations pooling their resources and pursuing a common agenda of preservation and revitalization.
Ongoing Corridor programs and projects include historic preservation, river cleanup, land conservation and stewardship, visitor centers, ranger walks, programs with schools, recreational programs and events, support for arts and cultural events, training for partners and volunteers and assistance to towns trying to preserve their heritage while also improving the local and regional economy.
