Shades IN Place: This wasn't the plan! (3/22/20)

Shades In Place
The Blind Spot
March 2020
I hope that you are safe and well during this crazy time. Like me, I bet you did not plan to stay put in your own home this Spring. In fact, I was scheduled to head down to Charlote, NC for a national convention this coming week. But sometimes, life throws a curvy ball at us, doesn't it?

We are living an unprecedented time and a global crisis that no one ever considered be possible (other than Hollywood movies)

Every business and every person / family will get a punch. Some will feel it harder than others, but nobody is out of the woods.

I am sure that my shade business is not your top priority at this moment. I get that, but please consider supporting the local small businesses in your neighborhood. They have a smaller financial cushion than large corporations.

Order food from local restaurants, keep your house cleaner schedule and why not get your shades from a local shady guy?

My hope is that since you are spending extra time inside your home, you will notice those twenty-year old mini-blinds must go.

All jokes aside, I wish that you and your family stay safe, wash your hands often and consider social distancing to slow the spread of the virus.

We are a strong nation and UNITED STATES to fight this pandemic.
God Bless America and the World.

Roger Magalhaes started in the window coverings industry in 2006 as a part-time installer for a national chain. After only two months, he was asked to leave for "standing out." Clients continuously requested him over the other installers and this didn't sit well with his colleagues. He knew he was on to something! Following this experience, Roger traveled to many parts of the country, acquiring formal training and receiving certifications from respected vendors such as Somfy, Hunter Douglas, Norman Shutters and Lutron. He also attended the Custom Home Furnishings Academy for formal installation training focusing on drapery and other soft treatments. Roger is the owner of Shades IN Place, Inc., located in the Boston area. He has done installations in seven states, as well as Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. He is the founder of the Facebook group Free Speech Window Covering Pros, a regular columnist for Window Fashion VISION magazine, a presenter at the International Window Coverings Expo and the installation instructor for the Window Fashion Certified Professional FastTRACK program. Shades IN Place Inc: We've gone national!!

I had the opportunity to participate in the ribbon cutting when Roger opened his location on Grove St and have been watching his business grow. His message today includes the realization that a Franklin business can gain business via the Internet. Not quite a radical concept but an important one none the less.

Nothing like the internet to help spreading the word...Read on to find out what happened two weeks ago.

Cheers,

Gone Nationwide
Last week I received a call from Claire. Claire was moving from North Reading to Milford, and needed window coverings for her new home. I have to be honest: I don't receive many phone calls these days. The majority of my inquires are either via email or text. Yes, texting is so popular nowadays and isn't just exclusively for kids anymore.
Anyway, back to Claire. I find that talking on the phone is great, because we can discuss details, get a feeling for what the client really wants, and even schedule a consultation all at the same time...I always like to get an idea of how people found us and because she did not mention it, I asked: "How did you find me Claire?" To my surprise, she said "I didn't...my daughter in California did."

Right there and then, I knew Claire's daughter in California had found my online reviews. It was one of the best moves I made a couple of years ago. Following the evolution of our society, we barely see or talk to our neighbors or family anymore (sometimes that can be a good thing), but the fact is that many times we have to rely on a complete stranger's experiences before we make our minds when making a purchase nowadays. Especially if the opinions you need are from people across town or even across the country!
Let me give you an example of why reviews are becoming so vital. Would you simply walk into a bookstore and buy just any book on the spot, based on the fact the cover said it was a best-seller? Or would you rather read the reviews and recommendations first, before you make your decision? Yeah, me too.
So today's newsletter has a few key points for you:
#1 - We are in November already, and this week we are celebrating
Thanksgiving. As such, I am humbled and so grateful for our success and your continued support. My company started out back in 2006 as a part time job, then went through the great recession, and I'm proud to say that next year we will be celebrating TEN YEARS in business and I could not do without you and your support. I just wanted to say THANK YOU!
#2 - The only way we can stay around for another ten years without being swallowed up by the big players, is by having the support of happy clients like yourself. Following the trends, I would humbly ask you to post a review of your experiences using our services. There are 3 links below for your convenience. Please use the one that suits you best. Thank you so much, It really does make a difference for us!
But Before I Go... I just started a weekly blog post called Riding Along
. Every week, you will have the opportunity to learn what we did, where we went, and what jobs we performed. We'll even try to make it fun and entertaining sometimes. Curious? Intrigued? Good! Hop on and check it out!
Wishing you and your family a peaceful, thankful, and restful Holiday Season!

3/15/15 - Save Bryan's information

You likely know someone with property damages View on the web

March - 2015

Hello and welcome to Siberia-like!
Worse than a ground covered in white, it is the damage caused by the record snowfall this winter.
But don't worry...help's on the way!
Read on to learn more.

Put Bryan on the speed dial
After my last email mentioning the snow damages at my shop, a big storm took place. No, not a white one. Instead, a big storm of emails, phone calls and even choco brownies in the mail to express support and friendship. THANK YOU!!

Among those emails was one from Carlos Vargas, my client and  owner of www.vargasinsurance.com extending any type of needed assistance and by the way, he was NOT my insurance agent. I explained to Carlos that I was having a really tough time getting my insurance company to agree on covering my losses. They originally denied 100% of it (image that) and it was then that Carlos told me to contact Bryan Holtzman from http://www.swerling.com/

Bryan is a public insurance adjuster and his job is to use his knowledge in the insurance industry to fight insurance companies against inadequate settlements for people like you and me. After explaining my situation to Bryan and providing a claim number and info requested, he spent about an hour on the phone with the insurance people and they agree to pay for my loss in full, which was waaaaay over $15,000 - something I was not able to do on my own even after weeks of emails and phone calls!

I am not an expert in snow damages but I can guarantee that you or someone you know has encountered property loss this winter. So please help yourself or someone you know by sharing Bryan's information. For obvious reasons, insurance companies don't like the general public to know that professionals like Bryan are available to help:

And speaking of property damages, I forecast an extremely busy Spring season replacing window treatments due to the record snowfall here in Mass. My suggestion is that you get out of your chair and start making phone calls now to schedule a contractor (if you need a referral, let me know). Otherwise your project is not going to start until Summer or even Fall.

In the meantime, please save some money (between 7 and 10%) for new window shades at the end of your remodeling project. Trust me, those paper shades won't look good with your new hardwood floor. For ideas & inspiration on your new window coverings click here
