Our agenda will cover developments and actions in Massachusetts and nationwide, including legislation and the ongoing efforts to transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy.

We will also devote part of the meeting to the issue of carbon pricing. Come learn about carbon pricing as a means to move Massachusetts to a more sustainable economy! Kevin O'Reilly, a 350 Mass North Shore member and Citizens Climate Lobby member, will give a presentation on carbon pricing, followed by a question and answer period. 350 Mass supported carbon pricing as an important legislative priority for years; however, during this current legislative session, while still supportive of the policy, 350 Mass is focusing on other bills. But perhaps the time is right for this legislation! In any case, we need to be aware of all the tools in the toolbox to deal with climate change.

If you'd like to understand more before he presents or can't make the meeting, you can read about carbon pricing here, and check out this report:

Our usual meeting is 7:00-9:00. Kevin will present beginning at 7:30.

ALERT: NO NODE MEETING THURSDAY, AUG 19, 2021!

Hey, node members!

We are canceling our 350 Mass Greater Franklin Node meeting this Thursday, August 19, 2021!

350 Mass is joining forces with allies at a
Rally to #SealTheDeal for Climate, Care, Jobs and Justice!

Congresspeople Seth Moulton and Richard Neal are the only two from the whole Massachusetts delegation to not sign onto the THRIVE Act which would provide $10 Billion over ten years for climate justice and jobs! To push them, we're having BIG RALLIES IN SALEM AND SPRINGFIELD to drive home we want STRONG legislation in the reconciliation infrastructure bill!

So sign up at the RSVP link if you can come to SALEM!
We want everyone there! Bring a sign!

The rally will be outside the whole time in a PARK, wear a mask,
and keep your distance.

So far, Ralph Halpern and Carolyn Barthel are interested in driving separately to the rally, so contact us if you're vaccinated
and you'd like to potentially carpool.

As the rally is 3:00-6:00 pm, there's not adequate time to return home for a Zoom node meeting, so we're canceling it.
Our next node meeting will be Thursday, September 2.

We hope to see you there!

There is much to talk about. In Massachusetts, the legislature is considering numerous climate bills, including those  endorsed by 350 Mass. In Washington, the Administration and Congress are debating one infrastructure bill and determining the contents of a second, more ambitious program. Meanwhile, the fight over fossil fuels is centered in Minnesota where work on the  Line 3 tar sands pipeline continues despite protests. Internationally, the most important event in years will be the Glasgow Climate Talks on November 1, 2021; climate groups are gearing up to  call for action.  Everyone's voice is critical. See our website for  ways you can act now.

To further our work and outreach, 350 Mass has launched our  redesigned website. We invite you to spend a few minutes taking in the new features and structure.

Our Greater Franklin Node wants to collaborate with groups and individuals from the region who share the same concerns, so all our cities and towns can benefit. Please join us to learn and contribute.

At our meeting we will update the status of bills that 350 Mass is promoting. You can view our legislative priorities here  (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TlmDp8VO0p5GGXFQZkyPisA5CJKt5ehQ/view). We'll also discuss local and regional issues and action plans.

As for the national scene, a major focus among climate activists is trying to stop the Line 3 Pipeline, a tar sands oil pipeline in Minnesota that Enbridge is building through Indigenous territory, breaking the treaties. It is despoiling hundreds of delicate waterways and will inevitably leak heavy tar sands oil into them, including the Mississippi River, a source of water for over 18 million people. A campaign is underway to pressure the banks who are funding the project; these loans are up for renewal this month. If you are able to help, you can contact the banks via phone or email using this online tool (https://stopthemoneypipeline.com/line3/).  Or you can join our local protest action, this Saturday morning, July 17, 10-11 AM, in front of the Bank of America building, 49 Main Street, Franklin, next to the Post Office; for more information, contact Carolyn Barthel (carolyncbarthel@gmail.com; 508-335-0848).

We hope you can join us on Thursday. We'll send a reminder that day.

350 Mass Takes Climate Action In Franklin

350 Mass Takes Climate Action In Franklin

On Saturday, June 26, members of the 350 Mass Greater Franklin Node and other local residents conducted informational picketing in front of the Bank of America in Franklin at 43 Main Street. Bank of America is one of several financial institutions that continue to invest and insure in fossil fuel, oil and gas projects that destroy our climate and environment.

The current fight concerns the dangerous Enbridge Line 3 oil sands pipeline now being constructed through the state of Minnesota. Line 3 would accelerate the climate crisis, threatens water supply in the middle of a national drought and natural resources including the Mississippi River, and violates tribal treaties in the path of the project.

Our action is one of many similar events taking place in an ongoing national campaign directed at JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, TD Bank, and other financial institutions.

Carolyn Barthel, co-coordinator of the Greater Franklin Node, said the response from the public was overwhelmingly positive. We distributed flyers that explain Bank of America's and other financial institutions' role in supporting this tar sands oil pipeline. Carolyn said, as part of an international campaign, we will continue these types of actions in Franklin and surrounding towns until we can convince these financial institutions to divest from Line 3.

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node Meeting, Thursday, February 18, 7:00 PM

Hello to our members and supporters. The Greater Franklin Node of 350 Massachusetts will meet this weekThursday, February 18 , at 7:00 PM.  Here are the the Zoom details, and a preview of the meeting.

There's no need to RSVP, and we'll send a reminder on Thursday.

Meeting Agenda
The principal topics at this meeting will be:
  • State legislative action on climate: In January the state Senate and House of Representatives passed the Next Generation Roadmap Climate Bill, only to see it vetoed by Governor Baker. The legislature proceeded to vote again and pass the same bill. The Governor sent it back with amendments. Read about it and take action here.

    • In a related development, the coalition Mass Power Forward has scheduled a Lobby Day (via Zoom) for March 4th. For the new legislative session, Mass Power Forward will be advocating for 3 main groups of bills: the Environmental Justice Table's priorities; the MA Renews Alliance work to rapidly retrofit homes to be affordable, efficient, electric and climate healing; and continuing our work from last session to get Massachusetts to 100% renewable energy. Information and registration here.
  • 350 Mass 2021-22 Campaign: Our priorities will include promoting energy-efficient housing and transportation. We will discuss these projects and roles for our Node within this region of the state.
As always, we'll touch on other developments in climate and energy news, and we'll identify ways that we can contribute as a Node and individually.

Thanks for your participation and support.

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node Meeting, Thursday January 21, 7:00 PM

Hello to our members and supporters. The Greater Franklin Node of  350 Massachusetts will meet this week, Thursday, January 7th, at 7:00 pm.  Here are the the Zoom details, and a preview of the meeting.

Meeting ID: 863 0133 3214
Passcode: 350ma

There's no need to RSVP, and we'll send a reminder on Thursday.

This week we will devote much of the meeting to consider proposals for the 2021-2022 350 Mass Campaign. The Statewide Steering Team has collected proposals from throughout the organization, and all the Nodes are now weighing in.

There are 13 proposals that we will review and rank. On the attached document you will find a form listing the proposals and providing links for more background (i.e., a video of a meeting at which the proposals were presented, the agenda from that meeting with links to descriptions of the proposals, and a file with short summaries of each).

You are welcome to give us your input on the proposals. You may join the meeting on Thursday, or—if you are unable to attend—you can spend some time before Thursday evening to review the proposals and fill out the form and return it to ralph.halpern@comcast.net

Whether you've been active in the past or not, we are happy to include you in this important planning and our upcoming projects.

On another matter, we and our allies in the climate movement are very disappointed that Governor Baker chose to veto the Next Generation Roadmap Climate Bill, a bill that thousands of Massachusetts residents like you worked relentlessly to see passed into law. The Governor's excuses are misleading and disingenuous. Please read this article with our response.

Thankfully, all is not lost, as the House and Senate leadership have refiled this landmark legislation, promising to return it to the governor with enough votes to override a veto if it comes.

Action step: We must call, email and tweet at our representatives and state senators, urging them to resubmit the bill as is. Share this op-ed in CommonWealth Magazine and use the hashtag #VetoProofClimateBill to call on our legislators to support the bill once again.

Thanks for your participation and support.

Members of the Franklin Node of the statewide organization 350 Mass voted to endorse The Community Preservation Act (CPA) in Franklin. 350 Mass is a movement of volunteer members who carry out both municipal-level and statewide campaigns intended to broadly and systemically confront the climate crisis, hold our politicians accountable and undermine the destructive influence of the fossil fuel industry.

Carolyn Barthel, coordinator of the Franklin Node, said that the local node encourages Franklin residents to vote yes on question 3 on the November ballot because the CPA is in alignment with our goals of resource preservation and affordable housing. With the Community Preservation Act, Franklin will have the resources to purchase land for open spaces, maintain and improve parks and recreation areas, restore historical sites, and provide more affordable housing.

Raymond Milici, Franklin resident and a member of 350 Mass, points out that several surrounding towns, including Norfolk and Wrentham, already enjoy the benefits of CPA, and Franklin should do the same. In addition to revenues raised, via a small surcharge on property taxes (details in link below) the state will also contribute funds to help support town projects covered under the Community Preservation Act. We would get a lot for a little. A win-win for Franklin. For open spaces and more, please vote yes on 3.
