Babysitting Taught at the Y

The YMCA has earned a reputation for programs that focus on youth development: from childcare to camp and t-ball to teen leaders clubs. Now, young adults ready for increased responsibility and earned income also have the chance to improve their babysitting skills at the Y. Dawn DaCosta, Teen Director at the Hockomock Area YMCA’s North Attleboro Branch, is offering a Saturday American Safety and Health Institute Babysitting Course.
The class will be offered Saturday, September 21st at the Y located at 300 Elmwood Street in North Attleboro. It is a great opportunity for youth ages 11-15 interested in sitting for siblings or working outside the home to gain critical skills. Also, to gain the confidence needed to care for children – from infancy and beyond. Upon completion of the class, participants will be given a student handbook and certification card.
Class time is from 10:00am – 4:00pm and costs $60 for members of the Y, $90 for nonmembers. Registration is available by calling the Y at 508.695.7001. For convenience, members may register online at hockymca.org (category Teens). Questions should be directed to Dawn at 508.643.5270 or dawnd@hockymca.org.

Opportunity for young artists

I have an opportunity for young artists: I would like to trade weekly art lessons for babysitting. I am looking for kids 12 and up to watch my children (ages 4 and almost 2) for a couple of hours after school at my home while I am in the house drawing and painting. In exchange, I can offer a half an hour of college-level art lessons, including homework assignments. I am particularly interested in mentoring teens who are considering making visual art their career.

I am a graduate of the illustration department of the Rhode Island School of Design. Professionally, I have spent a few years making art for computer games. I am now a stay-at-home mom, and I am currently trying to break into the children's book market. I have extensive experience with drawing and painting in various mediums, as well as various 3D mediums. I will tailor the art lessons to meet the needs of the student. In addition to teaching foundation 2D and 3D art skills, I can guide students in assembling college admission portfolios, and I can share my knowledge of the professional fields of digital art, illustration, animation, and fine arts.

Parents and students can learn more about me and see samples of my art at http://michclay.blogspot.com/ For inquiries, you can reach me at michclaywriter@gmail.com I encourage interested students to visit me with a parent so that we can get to know each other first.

Cheers! - Michelle Clay

Grand Opening of the Franklin Art Center

Hi Steve,

I wasn't sure if you wanted to post this is or if we could add a guest post or how you would like to handle it.

My wife and I have just started the Franklin Art Center. It is located in downtown Franklin at 5 Main St (behind Berry Ins.). We will be having the school's Grand Opening Saturday May 21st from 10 to 2 pm. This free event is for anyone to come in meet the teachers, ask questions about the classes, try a lesson, and learn about the art parties. The center will have morning, afternoon, evening and art weekend classes for ages 4 adults in a wide variety of media. Our weekly sessions provide our 4-5 year olds with hands-on activities, stories, and unique lessons for artistic explorations. We are working with the local school and our curriculum for our classes are based on the Massachusetts Visual Arts Frameworks.

Our beginner, advanced, private or group lessons for 16 to adults will focus on the individual needs of the student. Just a few topics we cover are:

- drawings to investigate compositional possibilities.
- blocked-out charcoal/pencil/oil sketches to arrange tonal values.
- oil sketches to experiment with various color schemes and harmonies.
- fundamentals of painting
- preparing canvas and paint for the anticipated tasks.
- applying paint to canvas, either incorporating the results in direct painting.

You are also invited to our gallery opening May 20th from 7 - 9 pm showing paintings from our featured local artist Victor Pisini. Victor is a local icon in Franklin and paints in both oils and watercolor. The gallery will rotate work from local artists and feature them on our web site and in our classes and on our facebook page.

Please visit http://franklinartcenter.com for more information or call my wife Linda in the center at 508.887.2797.  Or friend us at facebook.com/franklinartcenter

I'm sending this from work but the center's email address is franklinartcenter@gmail.com. Let me know if you have any questions. Look forward to seeing you.

Thanks again
Ian
