"If you’ve been waiting since last winter for more Girl Scout cookies, they’re back.

The cookies, which have been around for about 100 years, are available through March 8.

There is a new cookie, Lemon-Ups. But most of the longtime favorites – including Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs - are back. Prices have not changed in three years. But the packaging has been redesigned.

For the first time, cookies are baked with messages on them inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. Each Lemon-Ups cookie bears one of the following declarations: I Am Gutsy, I Am Strong, I Am Creative, I Am Bold, I Am A Leader, I Am A Risk-Taker, I Am An Innovator, I Am A Go Getter."

As some may recall from last Saturday, I managed to stock up on a supply of Girl Scout cookies from Troop 62378 was at the Rockland Trust Bank in downtown Franklin. Other girl scouts were at locations around town and will be for the next several weekends.

Smalley's Cookies now on the web

I found and bought some Smalley's Cookies at the Franklin Farmers Market this summer. They are great tasting cookies!

As I talked with John in his tent at the market, I asked if they had a website I could link to. Alas, it was under development.

Until recently that is. You can now find them on the web at Smalley's Cookies.

Some of the cookies I could get at the Franklin Farmers Market are no longer available. Although they tasted tested well, they did not sell well. This is likely because they contained nuts. You may have noticed that there has been an increase in nut allergies amongst the youth. Folks have decided to play it safe by buying cookies without nuts.

I talked with John recently to prepare this update and he was pleased with the company's growth. They went to five Farmers Markets during the summer. People liked the cookies. Word of mouth has enabled them to get into The Fruit Centers in Milton, MA. and Hingham, MA and recently, the Daily Bread Bakery in Whitinsville, MA.

I like their saying "Life is Hard, Have a Cookie!"

And on the vacant house front:

Pellegri, who has been Franklin's town clerk for 24 years, said she finds the number of vacancies listed - 778 - alarming.

That figure is down slightly from April, when the listing was 805, she said, but in past years, it is typically in the high 400s or low 500s, Pellegri said.
