“Every box of cookies is more than just a yummy cookie”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"If you’ve been waiting since last winter for more Girl Scout cookies, they’re back.

The cookies, which have been around for about 100 years, are available through March 8.

There is a new cookie, Lemon-Ups. But most of the longtime favorites – including Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs - are back. Prices have not changed in three years. But the packaging has been redesigned.

For the first time, cookies are baked with messages on them inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. Each Lemon-Ups cookie bears one of the following declarations: I Am Gutsy, I Am Strong, I Am Creative, I Am Bold, I Am A Leader, I Am A Risk-Taker, I Am An Innovator, I Am A Go Getter."

As some may recall from last Saturday, I managed to stock up on a supply of Girl Scout cookies from Troop 62378 was at the Rockland Trust Bank in downtown Franklin. Other girl scouts were at locations around town and will be for the next several weekends.

In the News: old and new, cookie bake-off, social media

Some of 'old Franklin' in new high school

Seeing the front of the new Franklin High School for the first time, longtime residents may regard it like a familiar face they can’t quite place.

Franklin - St. Rocco's cookie bake-off was one sweet contest

Even as people lined up to buy plates of Italian favorites at St. Rocco's Feast on Saturday, three were busy tasting and assessing an American classic: Chocolate chip cookies.

Smalley's Cookies now on the web

I found and bought some Smalley's Cookies at the Franklin Farmers Market this summer. They are great tasting cookies!

As I talked with John in his tent at the market, I asked if they had a website I could link to. Alas, it was under development.

Until recently that is. You can now find them on the web at Smalley's Cookies.

From their About page:
Smalley's Cookies is founded on the principles of life, love and the unending pursuit of joy. We hope our cookies bring a sigh of happiness to everyone who takes a bite.

At Smalley's we are cookie fanatics. Our goal is to create the most amazing cookies on the planet! We searched the globe for the most delectable ingredients we could find: dark and semi-sweet chocolate from Switzerland, fresh pecans with just the right amount of "snap" from Georgia, Dutch-processed cocoa from The Netherlands, sweet dates, all-natural coconut, whole eggs, sea salt and unsalted butter and not one drop of trans-fat or artificial anything!

We know you'll delight in our cookies and feel good knowing that they're all-natural. And what breeds happiness more than reaching out to lend a helping hand? Nothing! That's why a percentage of our profits are donated to organizations which protect our natural resources, and which serve children and adults across our globe.

In the words of Simon Raven, "Life is short and the world is wide," so stop and enjoy a Smalley's Cookie and spread a little happiness along the way.
Some of the cookies I could get at the Franklin Farmers Market are no longer available. Although they tasted tested well, they did not sell well. This is likely because they contained nuts. You may have noticed that there has been an increase in nut allergies amongst the youth. Folks have decided to play it safe by buying cookies without nuts.

I talked with John recently to prepare this update and he was pleased with the company's growth. They went to five Farmers Markets during the summer. People liked the cookies. Word of mouth has enabled them to get into The Fruit Centers in Milton, MA. and Hingham, MA and recently, the Daily Bread Bakery in Whitinsville, MA.

I like their saying "Life is Hard, Have a Cookie!"

Keep up the good cookie making John!

In the News - cookies, St Rocco's, vacant houses

The St Rocco's Festival cookie contest recap with winner Donna Copponi

Donna's winning recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies

Plenty of good food at St Rocco's

And on the vacant house front:

Pellegri, who has been Franklin's town clerk for 24 years, said she finds the number of vacancies listed - 778 - alarming.

That figure is down slightly from April, when the listing was 805, she said, but in past years, it is typically in the high 400s or low 500s, Pellegri said.

In the news - Annarella Cookie Company

At newly opened Italian bakery, Annarella Cookie Company, there's more than the aroma of spice filling the air - there's tradition, a little bit of magic, and a lot of love.

After a lifetime dreaming about owning a bakery, but being busy working and raising three young children, Suzanne Gendreau did it: She opened the shop at 1 Crossing Plaza in January.

Every aspect of the bakery, from its start to its recipes, staff, atmosphere, and even its name - Annarella - is filled with family.
