In the News: low flying helicopter alert, Town Council authorizes capital spending

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin
"The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration’s will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights along the route of the Boston Marathon Tuesday through Friday to measure naturally occurring background radiation.
The radiation assessment will cover about 13 square miles. A twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter, operated by the Remote Sensing Laboratory Aerial Measuring System from Joint Base Andrews, will fly in a grid pattern over the area at 150 feet above the ground or higher at a speed of 80 mph.
Flyovers will occur only during the day and are estimated to take about two days to complete.
The measurement is being conducted to establish baseline levels for security and emergency preparedness."

The first official documentary on the Boston Marathon is set to be released next fall.
Filmmakers were in Hopkinton in 2014 as the start line was being painted by Jack LeDuc and the elite Kenyan runners visited Elmwood Elementary School for their annual pep rally. Of course, they were at the start to film the first race after the 2013 bombings.
On Thursday, John Hancock Financial announced they will partner with LA Roma Films to be the title sponsor of BOSTON, the first ever feature-length documentary film about the race.

A local charitable group has kicked off its "12 Years of Donating" campaign this week, looking to exceed the more than three tons of food it donated to the Franklin Food Pantry last year.
The campaign, in its 10th year, is manned by a group of local schoolchildren: the Franklin Food Elves. This year marks the highest number of volunteers, officials said, with 115 students volunteering.

2015 Boston Marathon - Spectator Guidelines

From the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA):

The 119th running of the Boston Marathon will be held on Patriot’s Day, Monday, April 20, 2015. This year, 30,000 registered participants will run the 26.2-mile course, which starts in Hopkinton and passes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline before culminating at the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston. An estimated 1 million spectators will line the streets to watch this year’s marathon.
Local, regional, state, and federal public safety partners have collaborated to develop a comprehensive, layered safety and security plan that maintains the traditional family-oriented character and environment of this historic event.
Public safety officials ask spectators to follow reasonable and commonsense guidelines when traveling to the area and cheering on the runners along the marathon course. These guidelines will help ensure a safe and secure day:

Chad Larivee Fundraiser/Shawn Allen Boston Marathon

Greetings,
As many of you know, my good friend and tennis buddy's husband, Chad Larivee, had a terrible accident this summer that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Chad was a firefighter and is the father of three beautiful children (ages 14, 12, 9).
After spending nearly a month in the intensive care unit, Chad was transferred to Spaulding Rehab for two months and finally came home in November. The family is adjusting to their new life and they have gotten tremendous support from the firefighter community who retro-fitted their house with ramps, elevator, and an ADA bathroom. However, life is not easy.
The physical therapy program that Chad and the family has chosen is called Journey Forward and costs $100/hr. It is not covered by insurance. So, my friend and running partner, Shawn Allen, is running this year's Boston Marathon in order to raise funds for Chad's physical therapy.
Shawn is an ex-marine, who is known for doing a set of pushups in the middle and at the end of his runs. He is no slouch. Last year he ran Boston, his first marathon, in 3:17, just two minutes shy of his Boston qualifying standard. This year he hopes to break 3:15 and, more importantly, raise $50,000 for Chad's treatment.
Here is a link to Shawn and Chad's gofundme site if you are compelled to support them. Any donation goes directly to the Larivee family.
http://www.gofundme.com/k3fp0w
Thanks for any and all you can do to help out Chad and his family.
Love,
Kathleen
