FHS baseball, softball, and girls lacrosse teams post wins

Baseball = Franklin, 7 @ Attleboro, 6 – Final
– Franklin battled to a one-run win over Attleboro in a tight-knit affair. Jake Fitzgibbons had two hits for the Panthers along with an RBI while Jack Nally (run, two walks), Cooper Ross (two runs, RBI), and JB Floris (run) each had one hit. Alex Haba added a run and Shane O’Neil scored the game-winning run for the Panthers. Liam Dailey got the win, tossing a complete game with eight hits allowed, three walks, and five earned runs. Tim Callahan and Nick McMahon each had two hits and two runs scored, Alvaro Espinal and Camden Fitzpatrick each drove in two runs, and Lorenzo Wilson had an RBI for the Bombardiers.

Softball = Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 8 – Final
– Franklin took an early 2-0 lead and then saw its first four batters come around to score in the fifth on its way to a shutout win over Milford. Ally Shea (walk) and Maddy White (3-for-4, three runs, double) each scored on the first to put the Panthers ahead, and White (error), Sarah Jackson (triple), courtesy runner Katie Smith (Jackie Cherry single), and Emily Valentino (single) all scored in the fifth. Cherry struck out 13 to earn the win for Franklin, allowing two hits and two walks over six innings.

Girls Lacrosse = King Philip, 5 @ Franklin, 19 – Final
– Franklin played a complete game, building a double-digit lead by halftime and never looking back to beat visiting King Philip in a non-league clash. Annie Walsh led the charge with seven goals and two assists, Erin Walsh added four goals and two helpers, and Kelsey MacCallum added three goals and two assists. Hailey Toolin anchored a strong defensive effort in front of Gianna Cameron (seven saves).

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 2 vs. Hopedale, 3 – Final
– Franklin’s Liam Marr, Saketh Saripalli, and Vayshnav Malhotra each won but the Panthers fell under the lights to visiting Hopedale. Marr won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles while Saripalli and Malhotra picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at first doubles.

Girls Tennis = Franklin, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final
– Oliver Ames defended home court, sweeping singles action and grabbing one more win in doubles play. Sarah Leger won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles and Maura Kiernan picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles. The team of Eva Belanger and Morgan Vasiliou emerged with a 6-4, 6-4 win at first doubles. Franklin’s Krissy Stoyonova and Vagmi Kantheti won 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at second doubles.

FHS baseball and softball teams top Oliver Ames

Baseball = Franklin, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final
– Franklin erased a pair of deficits, the second time in the top of the seventh inning to grab a win on the road at Frothingham Park. OA built a 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 3-0 on a John Gomes sac fly to score CJ Deveau. Franklin rallied for three in the fifth inning to tie the score but the Tigers went back ahead in the bottom half when Jay Spillane (double) scored on an RBI single from Jacob Levine. 

In the top of the sixth, Jake Fitzgibbons brought Cooper Ross in with a sac fly to tie it, and Brennan Rivera drove in JB Floris for the game-winning hit. Rivera got the save in relief, allowing one hit but then getting a double play ball to end it. Fitzgibbons earned the win in a relief appearance, tossing 2.1 innings, striking out three with one walk and two hits allowed. 

Alex Haba (two doubles, run, two RBI) and Scott Elliott (double, run) each had two hits for the Panthers. Jake Erlich had two hits while Chris Pearsons had one and an RBI, and also had a strong outing on the mound in his first start. Sean O’Brien shined defensively for OA in centerfield.

Softball = Oliver Ames, 3 @ Franklin, 8 – Final
– Franklin raced out to a five-run lead before Oliver Ames plated three runs to get within striking distance. But Panther junior Sarah Jackson smacked a three-run home run in the sixth inning to help Franklin secure the win. Maggie Hobby had a two-run double early to help Franklin build a 5-0 lead. 

Katie Abreu had a two-run triple for OA, scoring Abbi Holmes (single) and Emma Varella (bunt), and then scoring herself on a single from Katie Mills to make it 5-3. Jackson put the game away with the three-run shot in the sixth. Emily Valentino, who had three hits at the plate, picked up the win in the circle for Franklin, tossing a complete game with four strikeouts.

FHS baseball, and both the boys and girls lacrosse teams post wins

Baseball = Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 8 – Final
– Franklin junior Liam Dailey tossed a complete game shutout and senior Jake Macchi uncorked a grand slam as the Panthers swept the season series against the Tigers, clinching at least a share of the Kelley-Rex division title with the win. Dailey needed just 63 pitches, allowing three hits with no walks, striking out four in an efficient performance. Macchi finished with six RBI total, Alex Haba also had an RBI and a run scored, Jack Nally scored twice, Scott Elliott had a hit and two runs scored, and Joe Lizotte and Brennan Rivera each scored once.

Boys Lacrosse = Foxboro, 5 @ Franklin, 12 – Final 
– Franklin used a strong performance to pick up a convincing win over visiting Foxboro. The Panthers took a 9-1 lead into the fourth quarter to win the Kelley-Rex division title outright. Jake Davis scored four goals and had two assists, Matt Lazzaro scored a hat trick and had two helpers and Jacob Alexander (14-for-21 faceoffs) scored twice with one assist. Foxboro’s Brendan Tully and Shayne Kerrigan each scored twice while Aidan Stapleton found the back of the net once. Freshman Matt Tully made 12 saves for Foxboro.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 14 @ Foxboro, 10 – Final

For nearly a decade, two teams have dominated Hockomock League girls lacrosse. Foxboro and Franklin have each won eight straight division titles, including the league crowns that both have already clinched this spring. The last time a team other than those two finished on top in the league was 2012, when King Philip shared the Kelley-Rex title with the Panthers. 

On Wednesday evening, the league’s top two teams squared off at Sam Berns Community Field. Behind a quick start that saw it jump ahead 5-0 and seven goals from senior midfielder Annie Walsh, Franklin pulled out a 14-10 victory to extend its remarkable league winning streak to 80 straight games dating back to April 2012. 

“I thought we did really well on the draws early, we were really feisty in the circle, and just took good shots in the first half,” Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said of the good start. “I think their goalie played awesome and really stepped up her game as it went on but we got on her early.”

Softball = Franklin, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

"The Taunton softball team has been one of the most lethal and dangerous offenses in the state over the past couple of seasons, and with 165 runs scored this year, they are among the best again this year. 

While the Tigers can certainly mash and string together hit after hit, one thing that Taunton is focusing on as the state tournament approaches is cashing in when the opportunity arises. 

Taunton turned to small ball on Wednesday night at Jack Tripp Field, scoring the first three runs of the game via squeeze plays, earning a 5-0 win over Franklin in a battle of top teams in the Kelley-Rex."

FHS boys and girls lacrosse post wins over King Philip

Baseball = Franklin, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final
– Mansfield scored once in the third and once more in the sixth, and senior Kyle Moran shined on the mound as the Hornets handed Franklin its first loss of the season. Moran scattered three hits, all in the first three innings, walked one and struck out 10 in a complete game effort. Sam Nugent (1-for-3) knocked in Connor Smith (hit by pitch) in the third to put Mansfield up. Junior John Carney (2-for-3, double) added the second run by scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth. Scott Elliott had two hits for the Panthers, including a triple. Junior Brennan Rivera was strong on the mound in the loss, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out nine with two runs (one earned) allowed in six innings.

Softball = Mansfield, 7 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Mary Muldoon had three hits, including a pair of doubles and a homer, and drove in four runs, as the Hornets pulled out a road win against league-leading Franklin. The Hornets got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Kara Bendanillo reached on an error and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. Mady Bendanillo walked and both sisters moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Caty DeMassi before Muldoon drove them in with a double. In the fourth, DeMassi and Muldoon had back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0 and then Casey Mousette singled in the fourth run. In the top of the fifth, Megan Letendre drew a one-out walk and then scored on a DeMassi double. After Franklin plated a pair in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2, Kara Bendanillo made a solid defensive play on a bunt attempt to end the rally. Mansfield tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Mady Bendanillo tripled with one out and scored on a sac fly by DeMassi (her third RBI of the game) before Muldoon sent a ball off the top of the fence and out for a solo home run to cap the scoring. Sarah Cahill allowed only four hits to pick up the win in the circle and Sydney Woods added three hits for the Hornets.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 17 @ King Philip, 8 – Final
– The Panthers stayed unbeaten in the league and clinched at least a share of an eighth straight league title with a road win. Erin Walsh scored five times and had a pair of helpers, while Annie Walsh scored three times, assisted on one, grabbed seven draw controls, and four ground balls. Kenzie Baker also had a hat trick for the Panthers, while Jackie O’Neil scored a goal and had three assists. Gianna Cameron made seven saves in the win.

Boys Tennis = Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Mansfield earned a win on the road at Franklin to pull into a first-place tie with the Panthers with three matches to go. The Hornets got a win at first singles and swept doubles action to edge the Panthers. Luke Nickerson won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, the team of Max Bank and Sethu Odayappan won 6-1, 6-4 at first doubles, and the Hornets’ second doubles team of Dheeraj Valluru and Sam Donellan won 6-3, 6-3. Franklin’s Rohan Herur won 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and Vayshnav Malhotra won 6-0, 6-3 at third singles.

Girls Tennis = Franklin, 0 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final
– The Hornets picked up two wins and singles and another in doubles play in a rain-shortened match against Franklin. Lizzy Elsner won 6-4, 6-2 at first singles and Aryana Khosravani picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of Hannah Podolske and Sam Sternburg won 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles.


Boys Lacrosse = King Philip, 5 @ Franklin, 11 – Final

"The Franklin boys lacrosse team knew it was going to get its toughest test from a league opponent when King Philip visited Pisini Field on Monday afternoon. 

But it was even tougher than they anticipated. 

The Panthers had cruised through its league schedule to this point, racking up seven wins and outscoring Hockomock foes 140-14. On the other side, King Philip raced out to a 10-0 record overall before suffering back-to-back losses to Canton and Grafton — both by one goal — before the clash against the Panthers. 

King Philip came out strong, taking the first lead of the game and going in front again in the second quarter. The Warriors limited Franklin to just four goals in the first half, trailing by two at the break. 

But Franklin found its footing in the second half, using timely goals in both the third and fourth quarters, and dominated possession en route to an 11-5 victory. The win clinches at least a share of a seventh straight Kelley-Rex division title for the Panthers.

FHS softball tops North Attleboro 5-2

"Softball = North Attleboro, 2 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– After trading two runs each in the first inning, Franklin took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to pick up a non-league win over North Attleboro. Abby Gallagher had a one-out single and scored on a double from Ashley Cangiano. Cangiano took third on the throw and scored on an infield ground out to make it 2-0. 

Franklin responded with two in the bottom half when Anna Balkus (3-for-4, two runs, RBI) singled and Gabby Colace (two runs) reached on a fielder’s choice, both scoring on a two-out double from Sarah Jackson (2-for-3, two RBI). 

In the fifth, Balkus led off with a single, Colace reached on an error, Maddy White drove Balkus in on a fielder’s choice, and Jackie Cherry brought Colace home with a sac fly. Balkus singled in Kylie Bouzan (3-for-3) with two outs to add an insurance run. Cherry earned the win for the Panthers, scattering five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts."

– Franklin had three pitchers combine for a one-hitter scored double-digit runs for the fourth straight game. Liam Dailey allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks, striking out four in five innings of work. Ben Guzman (two strikeouts) and Will Pacheco (three strikeouts) each pitched an inning in relief. Scott Elliott led the offense with three hits, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Haba (two runs, RBI), Jake Macchi (two runs), and Brennan Rivera (run, two RBI) each had two hits for the Panthers.

Softball = Franklin, 0 @ King Philip, 6 – Final
– King Philip Faith Turinese had a strong performance in the circle, scattering five hits in a complete game shutout. Meghan Gorman had two hits, including a home run, to lead the Warriors’ offense. Liliana Rolfe also had two hits and Abby Carey came through with a key single with the bases loaded. Franklin’s Maddy White went 2-for-3.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 21 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final
– Franklin built a 13-1 lead by halftime and then pitched a shutout in the second half, rolling to a win over the Hornets. Senior Jacob Alexander continued to dominate at the face-off X, winning 20-of-22 draws to help the Franklin offense control possession. Sophomore Matt Lazzaro scored six goals and had two assists, junior Jake Davis scored five times and added two helpers, senior Nitin Chaudhury had a pair of goals and one assist, and both junior Ben Greco (three assists) and senior Tim Kolb (two assists) scored once. Senior Will Davis made nine saves in net.

Girls Lacrosse = Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 16 – Final
– Franklin ran away with the game, picking up its seventh straight win with a 16-3 decision over visiting Mansfield. Senior Annie Walsh (four goals, three assists) and junior Erin Walsh (five goals, two assists) led the offense with seven points apiece, while Kelsey MacCallum added a hat trick and assists. Junior Gianna Cameron had a strong game in goal with 11 saves.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 2 – Final
– Franklin won two matches in singles action and won one doubles match in a three-set thriller to edge King Philip in a battle of top teams in the Kelley-Rex division. The Panthers, who entered tied with the Warriors in first in the division, got the deciding win from Saket Gandham and Shoumik Sompally, who pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win at second doubles to give Franklin the win. Liam Marr won at 6-3, 6-3 at first singles and Vayshnav Malhotra didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles. King Philip sophomore Nick Putney won 6-1, 6-2 at second singles and the team of Jack Cannon and Nate Ihley, both juniors, secured a 6-4, 6-0 win at first doubles.

– Franklin senior Alex Haba drove in four runs and classmate Scott Elliot went 2-for-4, including a three-run home run, to pace the Panthers to a win over Sharon. Jack Nally added two hits, including a double, and scored three runs, Cooper Ross knocked in two runs and scored once, Jake Fitzgibbons had two RBI, and Joe Lizotte went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Junior Brennan Rivera allowed just two hits in four innings of work, striking out three with one walk. Cody Trotin tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Softball = Franklin, 17 @ Sharon, 1 – Final (6 inn.)
– Franklin sophomore Gabby Colace (2-for-4) knocked in four runs, including a two-run triple in a six-run first inning as the Panthers earned a big win on the road. Junior Tina Pisano had a triple for Franklin and Kristen Smith had a hit and a run scored. Emily Valentino got the win, scattering five hits while striking out eight. Sharon senior Rebecca Clayman went 2-for-2 with a double and scored a run while Julia Earley had the RBI for the Eagles.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 17 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final
– Franklin senior Jacob Alexander went a perfect 23-for-23 at the face-off X, leading the Panthers to a big win on the road. Sophomore Matt Lazzaro scored a hat trick and had four assists, junior Jake Davis scored four goals and added one helper, and Ben Greco recorded five points with two goals and three assists. Frankie Ireland scored twice for Oliver Ames and Remi Creighton netted one tally.

Girls Lacrosse = Oliver Ames, 6 @ Franklin, 19 – Final
– Franklin had 12 players record a point in a convincing win at home against Oliver Ames. Sophomore Sydney Hawkins and freshman Anna Grasso each scored their first career goals for the Panthers in the win. Oliver Ames goalie Maddie Kullen had nine saves in net, Olivia Piazza had two goals and two assists, Ella Hogan scored twice with one assist, and Olivia Carroll and Sam Cathie had a goal and an assist each.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 2 @ Sharon, 3 – Final
– Sharon senior Danujan Thirumavalavan won the first and third sets, both by tiebreaker, to emerge with a win and give the Eagles a victory against the Panthers. Thirumavalavan emerged with a 7-6 (7-3), 2-7, 7-6 (7-3) win in a battle with Franklin sophomore Liam Marr. Alberto Olivei added a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0 win at second singles and freshman Rueman Bhattacharyya grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles. Franklin’s Saketh Saripalli and Vayshnav Malhotra (first doubles) and the team of Lucas Gulick and Shoumik Sompally (second doubles) both won 6-2, 6-2.

Baseball = Attleboro, 6 @ Franklin, 10 – Final
– Franklin senior Scott Elliott blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence to lead the Panthers to a win over visiting Attleboro. Jake Macchi (two runs) and Cooper Ross (two RBI, run) each added three hits for the Panthers while Alex Haba had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, JB Floris knocked in two runs, and Jack Nally had a double, walked twice, scored three times and had one RBI. Liam Dailey pitched for the Panthers, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. Attleboro Lorenzo Wilson went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Softball = Franklin, 14 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin scored two runs in the top of the first inning and tacked on six more in the second en rout to a win over Attleboro. The Panthers put the game out of reach with six more runs in the seventh inning. Maddy White went 3-for-4 and knocked in six runs, including a two-run double in the first and a three-run home run in the seventh. Sarah Jackson launched her third home run of the year, this one a three-run shot, in the second inning to help Franklin build its lead. Jackie Cherry allowed six hits while striking out 10 batters to get the win.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– It was a clean sweep for Franklin’s singles players, all winning in straight sets without dropping a game. Liam Marr (first singles), Rohan Herur (second), and Vayshnav Malhotra (third) each won 6-0, 6-0, the team of Lucas Gulick and Shoumik Sompally earned a 6-3, 6-2 win while Ryan McSweeney and Thomas Broyles teamed up for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Baseball = Franklin, 18 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final (6 inn.)
– Franklin senior Ben Guzman, junior Cody Trotin, and senior Gerard Collins combined to throw a no-hitter as the Panthers improved to 11-0 and qualified for the state tournament. Guzman allowed one unearned run on three walks and five strikeouts in five innings of work, Trotin struck out two and walked three with one earned run allowed and Collins fanned two in a scoreless seventh inning. Senior Jake Macchi paced the offense, knocking in six runs on three hits and scoring once. Seniors Scott Elliott and Alex Haba each had three hits, an RBI, and a run scored for Franklin.

Softball = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin, 13 – Final
– Franklin exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and tacked on four more in the sixth to pull away from the visiting Warriors of Foxboro. Senior Ally Shea had three hits and knocked in two runs while sophomore Gabby Colace drove in three runs on three hits. Junior Sarah Jackson and senior Tara Hartnett each had an RBI for Franklin.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 20 @ Taunton, 2 – Final
– Franklin junior Kelsey MacCallum scored her 100th career goal as the Panthers rolled on the road. Freshman Jill Fenerty dominated in the midfield for Franklin with five draws and two ground balls while sophomore Ali Socci netted her first career goal for Franklin.

Boys Tennis = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin, 4 – Final
– The Panthers earned wins at first and second singles and swept doubles action to protect home court against Foxboro. Liam Marr won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles while Rohan Herur took a 6-0, 6-3 decision at second singles. – Foxboro won all five matches in straight sets to defend home court against visiting Franklin. Pam Nelson (first singles) and Sarah Prag (second) each won 6-0, 6-0 while Paige Krockta battled to a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at third singles. The team of Kendall Milender and Julia Muise notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles while Maggie McAuliffe and Kethry Milne teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2 win at second doubles.

Baseball = Oliver Ames, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Franklin junior Brennan Rivera allowed just one hit and faced the minimum, tossing his second straight shutout to pace the Panthers to a win over visiting Oliver Ames. Rivera fanned 12 batters and had the one hit erased on a double play against the next batter. Scott Elliott (run), Alex Haba (double, run, RBI), and Jake Macchi (RBI) each had a hit for the Panthers. Reid Latham was strong for the Tigers, allowing four hits over six innings while striking out nine. Latham also had the lone hit offensively for OA.

Softball = Franklin, 16 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final (5 inn.)
– Franklin’s Emily Valentino allowed three hits, struck out five and issued one walk in a shutout performance, helping the Panthers win on the road. Maddy White paced the offense with three hits, a walk, two runs, and four RBI while Kylie Bouzan went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Franklin. OA sophomore Emma Varella had a pair of doubles while junior Katie Abreu also had a double for the Tigers.

Boys Lacrosse = Stoughton, 1 @ Franklin, 17 – Final

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final
– Franklin lost a total of four games in four matches in a road win at Oliver Ames. Liam Marr and Rohan Herur each won 6-0, 6-0 at first and second singles, respectively. Vayshnav Malhotra picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles and the team of Saket Gandham and Shoumik Sompally won 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles.

Girls Tennis = Oliver Ames, 4 @ Franklin, 1 – Final
– The Tigers won all three singles matches and added one more win in doubles play to notch a victory on the road. Sarah Leger won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Maura Kiernan picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles, and Sarah Barron rallied for a 3-6, 6-2 10-7 win at third singles. OA’s first doubles team of Eva Belanger and Morgan Vasiliou won 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Franklin’s Ashvika Boopathy and Vagmi Kantheti won 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 at second doubles.

Baseball = North Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin scored once in each the first, third, and sixth innings and junior Liam Dailey tossed a complete game with just one unearned run allowed as the Panthers beat North Attleboro to claim “The Cup” – the first year the trophy has been awarded since 1909. Alex Haba was the catalyst for two of those runs, drawing a two-out walk in the first, stealing second, and taking the next two bases on wild pitches. In the sixth, Haba tripled to right center and scored on a base hit from Jake Macchi. In the third, Joe Lizotte singled, took second on a pickoff attempt and scored on an RBI single from junior Jack Nally. Dailey scattered six hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Jared Penta and Jake Carroll each had two hits for North. Sophomore Dennis Colleran allowed three hits, issues three walks, allowed two runs and struck out four in five innings of work.

Softball = Franklin, 5 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final
– Franklin notched seven of its eight total hits in the sixth inning, resulting in five runs and a win on the road at North Attleboro. Ally Shea led off with a single, Anna Balkus had a bunt single and both moved up a base on an infield error. Gabby Golace drove in a run with a ground out, Maddy White followed with an RBI single, and back-to-back base hits from Jackie Cherry and Sarah Jackson loaded the bases. Tara Hartnett had a two-run single to make it 4-1 and Kylie Bouzan added an RBI single to plate Jackson to make it 5-1. North Attleboro took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Katie Daby. Cherry earned the win in the circle, allowing just three hits, one walk and one hit batter with three strikeouts.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 4 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final
– For the second straight match, Franklin’s Liam Marr pulled out a big win, this time over North Attleboro’s Jonah Manso, in a battle of top sophomores in the league. Marr won 6-2, 6-2 while Rohan Herur notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at second singles. Franklin’s first doubles team of Saketh Saripalli and Vayshnav Malhotra recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win while Saket Gandham and Shoumik Sompally prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 at second doubles for the Panthers. North Attleboro sophomore Sam Gallagher won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.

Girls Tennis = North Attleboro, 5 @ Franklin, 0 – Final 
– North Attleboro went on the road and won all five matches in straight sets to get the sweep. Tara Nair won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Mae McLaughlin recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles, and Olivia Wills picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles. North Attleboro’s first doubles team of Sam Martino and Haley Strom won 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles while Brototi Nandi and Jayli Carmichael won 6-3, 6-4 at second doubles.

Softball = Taunton, 1 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Franklin junior Sarah Jackson hit her second home run in as many games, this one a solo shot that broke a 1-1 tie to give the Panthers an upset win over Taunton, snapped the Tigers’ 28-game win streak dating back to last April. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Hanna Aldrich drove in Jaime Brown (two hits, two walks). Ally Shea led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and moved to second on an infield error. Courtesy runner Molly Collins scored on a two-out single from Maddy White to make it 1-1. Jackson broke the tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Cherry earned the win, allowing five hits while strikeout out four. Kelsey White was solid in the circle for Taunton, striking out six.

Boys Lacrosse = Sharon, 2 @ Franklin, 25 – Final

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 19 @ Sharon, 6 – Final
– Annie Walsh had nine points, five goals and four assists, to lead Franklin to the win. It was the third straight game that the Panthers had held an opponent to six goals or fewer. Kelsey MacCallum added four goals and Jackie O’Neil had a goal and three assists in the win. Franklin goalie Gianna Cameron made six saves. Sharon was led by Emma Eberhardt, who scored four of the team’s six goals. Jenna Goldstein and Bridget McManus each scored for the Eagles and McManus also had a pair of assists. Rose Wald came up with 12 saves against the Franklin attack.

Boys Tennis = Stoughton, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– Franklin’s Liam Marr prevailed in a battle with Stoughton’s Waseem Sablon in a battle of two of the top sophomores in the league, securing a 6-4, -5 win to complete the Panthers’ sweep. Rohan Herur won 6-3, 6-2 at second singles, and Vayshnav Malhotra didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles. Saketh Saripalli and Lucas Gulick won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles while Saket Gandham and Shoumik Sompally didn’t lose a game at second doubles.

FHS baseball and softball teams top Stoughton on Thursday

Softball = Stoughton, 1 @ Franklin, 13 – Final (5 inn.)
– Franklin got off to a strong start, scoring five runs in the first inning and four more in the second to beat Stoughton. Junior Sarah Jackson launched a two-run home run to highlight the Panthers’ big first inning. Ally Shea went 4-for-4 (courtesy runner Molly Collins scored three runs), Gabby Colace had three hits and two RBI, and Maddy White added two hits and two RBI. Jackie Cherry allowed just one run on two hits, walking two and striking out three in four innings of work to get the win. Nikki Coppola had a solo home run in the second inning for the Black Knights.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 9 vs. St. John’s Prep, 10 – Final (2 OT)
– Franklin had a lead and possession with under a minute to go but St. John’s Prep got the ball back after a save and scored with 16 seconds left and went on to win in double overtime. Owen Palmieri had three goals, Jake Davis added two goals and an assist, and Matt Lazzaro scored once and had two helpers. Will Davis made 17 saves in net for the Panthers while senior Jacob Alexander won 15-of-23 faceoffs.

Baseball = Franklin, 5 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

"Stoughton’s offense came knocking multiple times throughout the game, but in the biggest situations, Franklin’s defense slammed the door shut. 

The Black Knights loaded the bases in three separate innings and threatened with the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but three separate Panther pitchers came through to limit the damage, helping the Panthers secure a 5-3 win on the road. 

After two quick strikeouts to start the game from Stoughton starter Zak Paquette, the Panthers cashed in. Senior Alex Haba had an infield single and quickly moved into scoring position by stealing second. Haba came in to score on a two-out RBI from senior Jake Macchi to put the visitors up 1-0 after a half inning."

FHS boys lacrosse tops Newton North 17-8 on Saturday

Baseball = Mansfield @ Franklin – Postponed to 4/14 at 11:00.

Softball = Franklin, 0 @ Bridgewater-Raynham, 3 – Final

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 17 vs. Newton North, 8 – Final 
– Owen Palmieri and Jake Davis each scored four goals and Matt Lazzaro had a hat trick, as the Panthers stayed unbeaten after their biggest test of the season so far. Will Davis made 13 saves in goal and Jacob Alexander (two goals) dominated the face-off ‘X’, winning 20-of-24 and losing only one of the 14 face-offs in the first half. 

Newton North scored a minute into the second quarter to close the gap to 5-4 but the Panthers rolled off an 11-2 run and scored 12 goals over the final 30 minutes of the game. Ben Greco fed Ben Kolb for a man-up goal to make it 6-4 and eight seconds later Alexander found Lazzaro for another goal. Kolb picked out Nitin Chaudhury with a great diagonal feed to add another score before half. 

Palmieri made it 9-4 early in the second with a goal while practically lying on the ground and the Panthers answered a Newton North goal by scoring twice in 11 seconds, first on a behind-the-back shot from Lazzaro and then Alexander went bar-down after another face-off win. Jake Davis and Palmieri added goals before the end of the third, both assisted by Greco, and Franklin had pulled away to lead 14-6 by the end of the third.

Baseball = Mansfield @ Franklin – Postponed to Saturday, 4/13 at 6:00.

Softball = Franklin, 11 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final
– Mansfield scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut Franklin’s lead to just three runs (8-5) but the Panthers responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the lead and a win on the road. Franklin jumped out to an 8-0 lead, with Gabby Colace (2-for-2, double, three runs, five RBI) putting the Panthers ahead with a two-run home run in the second inning. The Panthers added five runs in the second and one in the fourth for the 8-0 advantage. After Mansfield cut it to 8-5 through six innings, Franklin senior Jackie Cherry launched a three-run home run to give the Panthers breathing room. Ally Shea (double), Anna Balkus, Peyton Aronne (two RBI), and Maddy White (RBI, run) each had two hits for Franklin. Mansfield left runners on base in every inning but the fourth, including leaving the bases loaded in the first, third, and the seventh. Ella Verheggen went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the loss and the Hornets also got two hits apiece from Mary Muldoon and Sarah Cahill. Emma Roche came off the bench with her first hit of the year to start a sixth inning rally.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 20 @ North Attleboro, 6 – Final
– Franklin senior Jacob Alexander won 21-of-27 faceoffs, helping the Panthers control possession in a 20-6 win on the road at North Attleboro. Matt Lazzaro paced the Panther offense with five seven goals and four assists, Jake Davis added five goals, Ben Greco chipped in with two goals and two assists, and Alexander added a pair of goals and assists in the win.

Girls Lacrosse = North Attleboro, 3 @ Franklin, 19 – Final
– Franklin notched its third win of the season with a big victory at home over visiting North Attleboro. Annie Walsh led the way with five goals and two assists while Kelsey MacCallum scored six goals with one helper. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said Hailey Toolin had a strong day in the midfield and on defense with three draw controls.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final
– Franklin swept doubles play and earned one more win in singles action to edge Mansfield at Memorial Park. Rohan Herur was the lone singles winner for the Panthers, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles. The team of senior Saketh Saripalli and freshman Vayshnav Malhotra won 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles and juniors Shoyaib Shaik and Shoumik Sompally prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-5 at second doubles. Mansfield’s Luke Nickerson won 7-5, 6-1 at first singles and Nilay Pangrekar scored a 6-0, 6-4 win at third singles.

The team of senior Hannah Podolske and sophomore Alex Burnham won 6-1, 6-2 at first doubles while junior Tori Detch and sophomore Alex Wendland prevailed 7-5, 6-1 at second doubles.

"Franklin senior Jackie Cherry has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 31 through April 6. Cherry is the 24th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2018-19 school year and the first player in the spring season. 

Cherry, a senior pitcher, opened the season with a no-hitter against defending division champion King Philip, providing the perfect start for a Panthers squad aiming to get back into postseason contention this spring. Franklin beat the Warriors 2-0 and Cherry was able to shut down one of the most potent lineups in the Hock."

Baseball = Franklin, 11 @ King Philip, 1 – Final
– Franklin opened its season in style with an 11-1 win on the road against King Philip. Junior Brennan Rivera earned the win on the mound, scattering five hits with no walks over six innings of work. Rivera also struck out three without allowing an earned run. Jack Nally had two hits — a double and a triple — with two RBI and three runs scored while Scott Elliott added three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Alex Haba (RBI, run), Jake Macchi (two runs), Cooper Ross (two RBI), JB Floris (RBI), and Joe Lizotte (two runs) each had two hits apiece for Franklin.

Softball = King Philip, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Franklin edged out a pitcher’s duel against the defending league champions thanks to a dominant start from senior Jackie Cherry. She allowed no hits to the potent KP lineup and struck out 10 batters. Cherry allowed only four base-runners, three on walks and one batter reached on an error. Faith Turinese was almost as good for the Warriors, limiting the Panthers to just one earned run. Anna Balkus led-off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Gabby Colace and to third on a single by Allie Shea (2-for-3 in the game). Maddy White drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with an RBI-single. Franklin added a second run in the fifth. Colace doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a groundout, before scoring on a wild pitch. Peyton Arone went 2-for-3 for Franklin and made a pair of great catches in left.

Boys Tennis = King Philip, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– King Philip’s second doubles team of Tyler Dowd and Jake Mager pulled out a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win to give the Warriors a 3-2 win over rival Franklin. The Warriors also got wins from Nick Putney (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) at second singles and Jack Cannon (6-4, 6-0) at third singles. Franklin’s Liam Marr won 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 at first singles and the team of Saketh Saripalli and Vayshnav Malhotra won 6-1, 6-3 at first doubles.
