In the News: EPA grant for Franklin, downtown holiday decorations, PMC Kids scavenger hunt

The Baker-Polito Administration has announced that Milford and Franklin are among nine projects to receive more than $1.28 million in grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), targeting water pollution from storm water runoff and erosion.
“It is vitally important that we address the effects of polluted storm runoff on Massachusetts waterways to protect both our environment and public health,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. “Through the administration of this grant program, we are able to work with the federal government to provide our local and regional partners the resources needed to improve water quality.”
“To keep our communities healthy, we must help them maintain a clean and safe system of water resources,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. “These water protection grants will help local officials identify storm water issues and address them promptly.”

In the News: sexting law, veterans unemployment, PMC water stop

In the years since, the number of adolescents who say they have sent a naked or sexually provocative picture has only increased. Indeed, about 20 to 30 percent of teens have sexted, according to the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University.
A definitive answer may be coming now that the state Legislature has taken up the debate. State Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, recently filed a bill that would amend the state’s child pornography laws to make sexting between minors a noncriminal offense or misdemeanor.
Currently, teenagers in Massachusetts arrested for sexting can be charged with a felony for child pornography. And if convicted, they would be required to register as a sex offender.

Alhough declining, the veteran unemployment rate is still higher than local veterans agents would like it to be due to a handful of factors.
Dale Kurtz, Franklin's veterans agent, said many employers look down on physical or emotional issues veterans brought back from the battlefields.“A lot of companies try to (look past those issues) but don’t,” said Kurtz.
Something as simple as reliable transportation can be a challenge to getting veterans back to work.

As it has for many years before, Franklin served as a way station for Saturday's Pan-Mass Challenge, the cross-state bike ride to raise funds to fight cancer.
Throngs of riders stopped at the Remington Middle School to rest, hydrate and prepare for the remainder of the ride to Provincetown. All were raising money for research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Franklin resident Jim McCusker, one of the volunteer organizers at the site, was in the midst of things, using his cowbell to direct riders to the appropriate location.

PMC Kids Ride - Jun 14

The PMC Kids Ride gives us the opportunity to work together with the Franklin community and make a significant impact in the fight against cancer. We have all been touched in some way with someone who has had cancer. This ride gives children an opportunity to feel that they can make a difference.
It empowers kids to become part of the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) mission of raising money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. This ride also teaches children the value of riding for the benefit of others.

"I love the camaraderie, all these people coming together for a cause"

The Milford Daily News reports on the rest stop for the PanMass Challenge that rode through Franklin on Saturday in part by writing:
This year – the 35th year of the challenge – roughly 5,700 riders are participating, according to Jackie Herskovitz, the Pan-Mass Challenge spokesperson.
Riders choose from 12 routes that range from 25 to 190 miles. The ride has three starting lines in Sturbridge, Wellesley and Bourne, and five finish lines: two in Provincetown and one each in Foxborough, Wellesley and Bourne.
At press time, the challenge has raised roughly $26 million, all of which goes to research and patient care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute via the Jimmy Fund.
The goal this year is $40 million. The final day to donate is Oct. 1, she said.

Fund raising weekend for cancer (photo essay)

As much as cancer is an insidious disease, it is heartening to see the community turn out to support fund raising efforts. There were two separate fund raisers this past weekend. (1) The Relay for Life held at Tri-County Voc Tech and (2) the PMC Kids Ride at the Jefferson School.

Friday evening, we were able to walk between the showers. My wife participated as part of the Oak St Team.

Noah's Ninjas...Kicking Cancer in the Butt!

Noah's Ninjas...Kicking Cancer in the Butt!
Hello! My name is Rosalyn Smith. My little brother, Noah Smith, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer the week of January 13th. This was a big change for everyone.
Noah is being treated at Jimmy fund Clinic and is doing very well. The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber treats pediatric oncology outpatients and through a unique collaboration, Jimmy Fund Clinic patients receive inpatient care when needed at nearby Boston Children's Hospital.
We have been so grateful for all the dinners made, the cards, and the gifts were just astonishing. A lot of people want to help and this is a perfect opportunity for kids and adults (Noah's friends or mine or even anyone else) to show their support to Noah.
Please consider clicking on the link to join the team or donating to support the team. I would love for you to join us and ride along with Noah's Ninjas-here to kick Cancer in the butt!

PanMass Challenge makes a water stop in Franklin

As noted the annual PanMass Challenge bike riders made their water stop in Franklin on Saturday morning. The riders left Sturbridge and began to arrive at the Remington-Jefferson School complex around 7:30 AM. I stopped by to take some photos, a couple of brief videos and managed to see a couple of the riders I had contributed to. I missed finding the other riders but as you can see in the photos, most are all wearing the same shirt. They all have their safety helmets on and when on a bike, they can be hard to pick out of the crowd.

It is heartwarming to see the welcome provided by so many of the volunteers, friends and family and equally heartwarming to see so many riders. When folks can come together like this for a good cause, it is a special time!

The Pan Mass Challenge rides through Franklin

The PanMass Challenge will ride through Franklin Saturday morning. Back in January, I received this email from Martin Middelman, a regular reader of Franklin Matters. Hundreds of riders have been training for months for this weekend fund raising effort. Martin will be joined in this ride by Town Administrator Jeff Nutting, State Representative Jeff Roy and several other Franklin riders.

In a time when the TV shows negative news, it is heartening to see so many folks taking action for a worthy cause. Cancer touches all of us, directly or indirectly. Is there a person who hasn't lost a family member to this? Or doesn't know someone struggling with it?

Get up early Saturday morning and head to the Remington Jefferson School to see the riders come in. The school grounds serve as a water and rest stop on the ride.

Cheer them on!

Be encouraged by so many taking action!

Contribute to the cause.

"There is a lot riding on this!"

Riders

There's a Lot Riding on This

Dear friends,

Today I've committed to raising money for cancer research by riding in the 2013 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). On the first weekend in August, I will join 5,500 cyclists in the PMC ride, an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI) in Boston.

I hope I can count on your support

The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country, $375 million since 1980 and $37 million last year alone! This success is the result of a lot of people riding for, and caring about, a cure. And because every penny matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to DFCI.

I've made a personal commitment to ride and raise $4,300. So I hope you can help me achieve this significant goal.

Please donate to my PMC ride at one of the following links:

Click here to make a $50 donation
Click here to make a $100 donation

Every donation brings us closer by the mile.

Thank you,
Martin Middelmann

Your donation is tax deductible and 100% will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. If you prefer to write a check, please make it out to the PMC, The Jimmy Fund or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and mail it to me directly at:

Save The Date - May 17th - PMC Fundraiser

On Friday May 17th, we are having our Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) fundraiser at the Franklin Country Club, which will include dinner and entertainment. The entertainment is absolutely hysterical.
Yes, we are having Jim Spinnato back again this year, the R - Rated Hypnotist / Comedian. It is a great night out. For those of you who attended last year, you know the show is nonstop laughter…. and the best thing is….. you don’t have to travel to the CT Casino’s (where he regularly sells out) and spend a lot of money. I really hope that you can attend.
I will get back to you with more details…. But please save the date and please spread the word and invite neighbors, friends and family. We need to pack the house again this year.
