Metacomet Land Trust Annual Meeting - Sunday, May 19

Hello!

To help you through this cold, wet spring we've scheduled an exciting speaker for our land trust annual meeting on Sunday, May 19 at the Nipmuc High School.

Doug Harris will present Let the Landscape Speak and will delve into the characteristics and possible meanings behind the Indigenous Ceremonial Stone Landscape that surrounds us in New England. Often hidden in plain sight in our forests and fields, these enigmatic stone structures can be remnants of a network built by Indigenous Americans for ceremonial and other purposes.

Doug Harris, Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Narragansett Indian Tribal Historic Preservation Office, has been Tribally certified in the identification of ceremonial stone features for 16 years. Harris will present an illustrated talk showing the various types of Indigenous ceremonial stone features found in the region.

Won't you join us with a preview of our silent auction items at 1 PM with our program starting at 2 PM? A visit to Upton's Chamber will be offered depending on the weather.

Please be sure to join us and invite friends and family as well!

Franklin Community Leaders Recognized At Hockomock Area YMCA Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Hockomock Area YMCA was held on May 17th at Lake Pearl in Wrentham. The organization gave special recognition to several members of the community, including Hailey DeMello and Jeff Nutting.

The Youth of the Year Award was awarded to Hailey DeMello of Franklin. The award recognizes youth members of the Hockomock Area YMCA who, as a result of their commitment and dedication, make a positive impact on the YMCA and the community. DeMello, a senior at Franklin High School, is a camp counselor at the Bernon Family Branch in Franklin, a member on the executive board of the Leaders Club, as well as this year’s captain of the Relay for Life team.

She attributes her work at a local women’s shelter to the confidence instilled in her during her time at the Y’s Bernon Family Branch, also emphasizing the importance of the work done at the YMCA. “A lot of the work the Y does goes unnoticed,” said DeMello. “But we do it anyway. Because it’s helping people who need it.” Following her high school graduation, DeMello intends to pursue a double major in history and communications at the University of New Hampshire, with the goal to work in either public relations or secondary education.

Jeff Nutting received the Red Triangle Award for the Bernon Family Branch in Franklin – an award which recognizes individuals for their partnership and support of the programs and activities of the YMCA, which meet the changing needs of the community. Nutting has served as the Town Administrator for Franklin since 2001, and from the beginning has been invaluable in providing important services such as clean air, clean water, and well-maintained roads to the town to which he is so dedicated.

In the words of Jeff Roy, who presented the award to Nutting, “Jeff Nutting exemplifies all of the actions that are demonstrated by the Red Triangle Award, and I think he epitomizes the notion of where cause meets community.” Nutting himself believes wholeheartedly in the importance of the Bernon Family Branch to local families, saying that “in a difficult world, the Y offers opportunities for so many people whether it is a respite for those who might be struggling emotionally or financially, or a supportive place for people and families to exercise and be active.”

The Dean College YMCA Scholarship Award, which is awarded to one deserving high school graduate, was given to Oliva Wilcox at this year’s annual meeting.

Franklin residents honored at YMCA Annual neeting

At Lake Pearl in Wrentham on May 18th, volunteers, members, and community leaders of the Hockomock Area YMCA came together to celebrate the Annual Meeting. At this meeting, many outstanding members and partners of the Y accepted awards honoring their commitment and service to the YMCA and the community.

Brian Earley, chairman of the Y’s Board of Directors presented the Chairman’s Award to the Robbins Family of Franklin. The Chairman’s Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership, dedication, and passion working with the Hockomock Area YMCA to improve the quality of life in our community. As Brian Earley mentioned in his presentation of the Chairman’s Award, “Terry and her family have been instrumental in helping us impact children and families in our Bernon Family Branch.”

The Robbins Family has long been a partner of the Y, even in 2003 when Terry Robbins joined the steering committee for the “Shaping Our Futures Together” capital campaign. This campaign transformed into the Bernon Family Branch. From there, the Lee W. Robbins Gymnasium was dedicated in 2004 in memory of Terry’s late husband, and Terry and her sons, Jason and Robbie, have been active in philanthropic work through the Robbins Family Charitable Fund.

Additionally, in January of this year the Robbins Family dedicated the Robbins Family Kids Gym at the Franklin Y. On accepting the Chairman’s Award, Robbie Robbins expressed gratitude on behalf of his family, saying “Thank you once again for recognizing our family. We’re all part of this team, the local community, and we thank you, everyone in the YMCA for your continued service going forward.”

Annual Red Triangle Awards were presented, recognizing individuals or organizations for their partnership with and support of the Hockomock Area YMCA and their help in meeting the changing needs of the community. On behalf of the Bernon Family Branch, a Red Triangle Award was presented to State Representative Jeff Roy of the 10th Norfolk District of Massachusetts. Representative Roy was fundamental in the creation of the S.A.F.E. Coalition, a group that aims to assist those who struggle with substance abuse. The coalition comes together to provide support, education, treatment options, and coping mechanisms, according to the group’s mission statement.

On receiving the award, Representative Roy remarked, “They [The Hockomock Area YMCA] reach out, it goes under the radar, nobody knows that they’re reaching out and helping these people and they’ve done it time after time and I’m so grateful to have developed a relationship to be a part of this YMCA team.”

Youth of the Year Awards were also presented at the Annual Meeting. Youth of the Year Awards recognize youth members of the YMCA who positively affect the Y and the community. One honoree was Samantha Bellavance, of the Bernon Family Branch in Franklin, who has been a member of the Y almost her entire life. Active in the Y’s Leaders Club, Samantha has spent an astonishing 2,000 hours performing community service.

She is also active in the School’s Out program, where she is a group leader for the before and after school child care at the Y. According to Nate Packert of the Bernon Family Branch, “Throughout her Senior Leaders journey, she has shown what it means to be a leader among leaders through hard work and dedication to the club.” Samantha is headed to the University of New England for ocean studies and marine affairs, but not until after she works as a YMCA camp counselor this summer.

Franklin Community Cable Access - Annual Meeting - Nov 13, 2014

On Thursday we held our third annual open member meeting. This was a good opportunity to begin shifting gears from all the construction and preparations of a new facility to a new focus - on how we will better serve Franklin.
We began with a review of our finances to date: In spring of 2012 we began operations with some of the cable funds that the town had held in reserve. We purchased and renovated our building, installed new video equipment and paid our operating expenses.
In sum: We remain on track with our development plan that was submitted to the town when we formed and began operating as FCCA, Inc. in 2012.

L to R: W. Ken Norman, John Milot, Nick Remissong, Anne K. Bergen, Jay Horrigan, Rose Turco, and Wesley Rea.
L to R (back row):. Ken Norman, Nick Remissong,  Jay Horrigan, Wesley Rea  L to R (front row):John Milot, Anne K. Bergen, Rose Turco,
There were no new board seats opening up this year, so our current board soldiers on. They have all been actively engaged in our progress, our programming and operation.
As Executive Director, I have enjoyed their full support and thoughtful guidance in piloting our excellent progress to date. For all they do, I am most grateful.
Looking forward, we turned to the topic of Community Outreach. We invited Franklin’s nonprofit groups to participate in our meeting. We discussed how we can work together, helping each other to better address the needs of the community. Some excellent ideas were put forward and plans are in the works. Stay tuned.
And, thanks for watching!
