Cultural District Committee - March 20th

Pursuant to expressed interest from the community, the Town of Franklin is currently working towards the creation of a state designated Cultural District.
As is required, the Town is looking to form a Cultural District Committee to partner with interested organizations and institutions in order to identity all cultural facilities and activities as well as to shape concrete goals and objectives for the proposed Cultural District.

The Committee should consist of cultural organizations, specifically those that represent artists in the community, as well as historical and community organizations. Non-profits, private businesses, government agencies, educational and faith based institutions are all encouraged to participate in the partnership.
Anyone interested in participating, or in need of additional information should contact the Town’s Department of Planning and Community Development.
The organizational/informational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Mar 20th at the Library beginning at 7:00 PM

Franklin’s downtown would be a candidate for designation as a "cultural district."

The Milford Daily News reports on a visit by the MA Cultural Council Director on Thursday
"This is very exciting: This community sees the arts as central not only to the quality of life for the people who live here, but it also sees the arts as essential for a top quality education and essential for the vitality of its downtown," said Anita Walker, appointed as the state’s highest-ranking cultural official in 2007.
Walker's last stop on her first trip to Franklin was the downtown Franklin School for the Performing Arts. Upon seeing the school, she walked through the proposed space for the Franklin Performing Arts Company’s new theater on West Central Street.
The nonprofit will open a 250-seat "black box" style venue in the spring.

New State Grants Benefit Community Cultural Programs

New State Grants Benefit Community Cultural Programs
Senator Spilka announces state grants for nonprofit cultural organizations and schools in Franklin and Medway

(FRAMINGHAM, MA) – Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) today announced that the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) has awarded grants totaling $10,780 to cultural organizations, schools and communities in Franklin and Medway.

These grants support a wide variety of cultural activities and projects that benefit local residents, while supporting jobs in the nonprofit cultural sector. The announcement was made as part of MCC's statewide funding program, which benefits in FY14 from a $1.6 million increase to its state appropriation, approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in July.

"MCC grants help to ensure that the unique cultural resources in our community and across the Commonwealth continue to thrive and benefit our citizens today and in the future," Senator Spilka said. "I am pleased to announce these new grants and cultural investments. State support for the arts, humanities and sciences is invaluable in connecting children and adults to diverse cultural experiences."

The MCC approved the following funding for local cultural councils in the community:

•             Franklin Cultural Council, $6,530
•             Medway Cultural Council, $4,250

Local Cultural Councils comprise the most extensive public cultural funding network in local concerts and exhibitions. Grants to local councils are determined by a formula that reflects the state's local aid system.

About the Massachusetts Cultural Council

The MCC is a state agency supporting the arts, sciences and humanities, to improve the quality of life in Massachusetts and its communities. It pursues its mission through a combination of grants, services and advocacy for nonprofit cultural organizations, schools, communities and artists. "truly beneficial to the community and bring people together"

"We wanted to have something other than grants to give back, show, and make a visual acknowledgement (with a reception) and to bring people together and truly thank them," Welsh said.
She said a majority of the recipients were present, including Concerts on the Common, Franklin Performing Arts Company, Franklin Historical Museum and the Fourth of July Celebration committee, among others.
Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting, state Sen. Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, Massachusetts Cultural Council Program Coordinator Tara Ahmed and Craig Carey, an aide for Rep. James Vallee, D-Franklin, spoke of their support for the council, Welsh said.
"There was a lot of representation from the Town Council, School Committee members, local government and state government," she said. "It was just great."

Franklin, MA: Cultural Council

The Franklin Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The Local Cultural Council program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the
Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. We are a volunteer board that believes that the arts, science, and humanities have the power to build a healthier and more vital community in Franklin.

Grants

The Franklin Cultural Council reviewed proposals from artists, organizations, schools, and organizations for arts, humanities, and interpretive science projects. The FY2009 grant awards totaling $10,550 were awarded to twenty-five projects that best provided a public benefit to Franklin residents including the Franklin Art Association, Family Concert Series, Senior Citizen Musical Show,
LiveArts, Concerts on the Common and many more. Various awards to the Franklin Schools were made so that children could enjoy performances by artists such as the Hampstead Players for a production of Prince Caspian, Steps Off Broadway, as well as educational programs including Journey Back in Time’s, “Pioneer Living” Program. The Franklin Cultural Council has also been generously funded by the Town of Franklin in the amount of $2,000.
