"Jug of Punch" to perform at Memory Cafe - Feb 24

One of the regular offerings within the Dementia Friendly Franklin program at the Senior Center, is the monthly Memory Cafe. This month's session features some Irish folks songs performed by the "Jug of Punch" duo.

Franklin Senior Center Hosting Memory Cafes as part of Dementia Friendly Franklin Program

The Franklin Senior Center has received an $11,712 grant award from the MetroWest Health Foundation to make the city of Franklin a Dementia Friendly Community.

A component of this process includes providing a monthly Memory Café at the Franklin Senior Center that offers regularly scheduled social events for those living with dementia and their care partners, to encourage social interaction in a welcoming and accepting atmosphere.

Our next Memory Café is scheduled for Monday, September 24th, at 3:00 PM. This month’s presentation will offer information and a hands-on meeting with “Ernie” The Therapy Dog. Therapy dogs can be a great source of comfort and companionship for individuals struggling with memory impairment or isolation. For information, please call the Senior Center at 508 520-4945.

"Lisa Ushkurnis could feel the pain, sadness and isolation in the voices of countless senior citizens each time they discussed their spouse’s, a friend’s or their own battle with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. 

The pain of watching a loved one’s memory and quality of life slowly deteriorate. The sadness of knowing there is no cure. The isolation of rarely leaving their home out of fear that their loved one with dementia may act inappropriately. 

“I heard their pain and isolation,” said Ushkurnis, social services supervisor with the Framingham Council on Aging. “They felt like they had nowhere to go, nothing to do. It’s a heavy disease.”

In the News: sports teams added, Milford raises age, Narcan considered by Medway, memory cafe at Senior Center

"The School Committee has added gymnastics and freshman lacrosse to the high school's sports roster. 

Athletic Director Brad Sidwell spoke before the committee at its Jan. 12 meeting in favor of the changes, in addition to giving an update on several initiatives at the school."

Franklin's BOH considered this move in 2014 then did not raise the age.

"The Board of Health has raised the legal age for tobacco purchases in town from 18 to 21. 

The order, enacted at the board's meeting this week, goes into effect April 1. It makes Milford the 93rd town in the state to raise the legal age. Milford follows other area towns, such as Medway and Ashland, in a decision aimed at curbing youth substance abuse. The order also restricts e-cigarette purchases to those 21 and older. 

“It is our responsibility as a local board of health to do all we can to guide our young people and create a healthier future for all our residents,” said Paul Mazzuchelli, the town's health officer."

The Franklin School Committee had previously considered this move.What the new committee now sitting will do remains to be seen.

"With drug users overdosing at an alarming rate around the state and country and the scourge of heroin finding its way into the lives of atypical drug users, the school department is considering arming itself with an overdose-reversing drug.
Narcan, a nasal spray, reverses the effects of an overdose caused by an opioid, like heroin, morphine and other prescription painkillers. 

Superintendent Armand Pires said the school department is engaging in an “ongoing discussion” throughout the district to gauge the need to stock the drug, a step that other nearby school districts have taken."

This month's Memory Cafe will be held as usual on the third Thursday of the month, January 21st at 3:00 at the Franklin Senior Center. 

The Memory Cafe is for Caregivers and their loved ones living with memory loss. It is a safe and supportive environment where families can socialize and feel at ease.

This month we are happy to have three or four Franklin middle and high school students who will be playing some older familiar tunes on the violin and viola. They will be led by Kathleen Woods Studio.

The Cafe is open to all in the community and free of charge. For more information please call Elaine Owens at 508-520-4945. We encourage you to sign up so that we have an idea as to how many we will have at each cafe. Refreshments are served!

Do you want to learn more about a "Memory Café"? A memory café is a safe and supportive social environment for families who have a loved one with Dementia. 

It is a place to relax and socialize and typically have some form of entertainment. A place where families can be with others in similar circumstances. Come spend some time with us! We always have a good time!

This month's memory café features a pet therapy visit. We will have a small, therapy trained dog to visit with us.

This month's memory café is October 15th (always the third Thursday of the month) at the Franklin Senior Center from 3:00-4:30.

This month's Memory Café will be held on Thursday September 17^th at 3:00 at the Franklin Senior Center.  It is open to all the community and is free of charge.   

Memory café offers a safe and supportive environment for Caregivers and their loved ones who are living with Alzheimer's or a related Dementia.  Each month we socialize, share in a refreshment and usually do a brief activity or have entertainment. 

We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the Franklin Senior Center.  

This month we plan to assemble our own snacks with various fun foods!

Memory Café - Thursday - Aug 20 - 3:00 PM

Please join us this Thursday at the Franklin Senior Center for our monthly Memory Café. Memory cafes are places for people with memory loss to share in social time with their caregivers and others.

This month we plan to do a very simple flower arrangement with flowers donated by Hillside Nurseries. We will have a refreshment and just chat and relax!

Memory cafes are popping up around the state and nationally as well. Locally the cafes are coordinated by Beth Soltzberg at Jewish Friends and Family Services in Waltham, Mass. There are several cafes in our area and all are open to the public and are free of charge.
