ArtWeek: Worcester Chamber Music Society - Multi-media Concert - May 6
The Worcester Chamber Music Society will be coming to Franklin for a unique multi-media concert on May 6 as part of ArtWeek. In conjunction with the Franklin Public Schools, the Art + Music Family Concert will offer music of Mozart, Debussy, Haydn, and Ginastera at the Franklin High School auditorium from 3:00 - 4:30pm.
Artwork inspired by the pieces and created by Franklin's elementary school students will be projected above the musicians' heads in a presentation timed to the music. In addition, Jacob Hoover and Katherine Bickford, who dance professionally with the Festival Ballet Providence, will perform, and children in the audience will have an opportunity to create art real-time.
After the concert, there will be a Meet & Greet with the musicians, giving audience members a chance to see the instruments up close and speak to the people who play them.
"ArtWeek is a great opportunity for people to experience the arts in new and engaging ways, and we are excited to come to Franklin!" says Worcester Chamber Music Society Executive Director Tracy Kraus.
Thanks to sponsorship by the MetroWest Visitors Bureau, Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, Dean Bank, Middlesex Savings Bank and the Franklin Cultural Council, tickets are being offered at a greatly reduced ticket price of $10/adults, $7/seniors and students, and all children 17 and under free with a paying adult.
Tickets can be purchased at: www.worcesterchambermusic.org/franklin-family-concert.
The program will include Mozart's Flute Quartet in D Major, Allegro; Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, Interlude; Haydn's Piano Trio in A Major, Allegro; and Ginastera's Impresiones de la Puna (complete).

"When Franklin resident Joseph Cooper took a break from watching TV to grab a late-night snack on Saturday, Feb. 3, he returned to the basement of his home on Warwick Road to hear a popping sound coming from the connected garage.
“It’s happened before where a squirrel would get into the garage and knock everything over,” he said. “But when I opened the door there was already a good fire going inside.”
He said the smoke detectors were going off in the garage, but because the door was steel and the alarms weren’t connected to the rest of the house, he couldn’t hear them.
“I tried to fight it a little bit, screaming to my daughters to get shoes and coats and get out,” he said."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)

Art in Motion Juried Exhibition and Live Art Event |
"The Trump administration is once again calling for the complete elimination of a heating assistance program that helps to keep the homes of low-income families warm. And once again, program supporters are vowing to fight it.
The administration is using the same arguments from a year ago when it tried to abolish the program, saying it’s rife with fraud and that no one would be left freezing if the program goes away.
“These arguments are very misleading and wrong,” said Mark Wolfe, director of the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association in Washington, D.C.
The program, known as LIHEAP — Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program — helps families pay their heating bills primarily in the form of a grant that’s sent directly to utility companies or heating fuel vendors."

"Campaigns backing seven ballot questions dealing with the minimum wage, sales tax, paid family and medical leave, nurse staffing and a campaign finance commission turned in their paperwork to Secretary of State William Galvin’s office by a Wednesday deadline.
The petitions have not yet been certified as having the 64,750 required to move on to the Legislature, the next step in the process.
Signatures were submitted on behalf of two versions of the nurse staffing question. Backers of a petition seeking a constitutional amendment that would allow the exclusion of abortion services from state-funded health care programs submitted signatures Wednesday but they did not submit a sufficient number of signatures, according to Massachusetts Citizens for Life."

Franklin Cultural Council to Partner With Spring 2018 ArtWeek Festival
The Franklin Cultural Council (FCC) announced today that it has been named a collaborator for the upcoming ArtWeek festival happening April 27 – May 6, 2018. Applications for the festival are now available at artweekma.org. The early bird deadline to submit an ArtWeek event is January 8, 2018 and the final deadline is February 28, 2018.
ArtWeek is an award-winning innovative festival featuring hundreds of unique and creative experiences that are hands-on, interactive or offer behind-the-scenes access to arts, culture, and the creative process. Now an annual statewide festival, ArtWeek was born in Boston in 2013 and recently expanded its footprint across the Commonwealth.
"Franklin has one of the most vibrant arts scenes in MetroWest," says FCC Chair Stacey David. "Our role as a collaborator is to help artists, performers and venues partner together to create a really memorable ArtWeek festival showcasing their amazing talent and resources to the rest of the region. We are pleased to announce that the Franklin Public Library, Rec Department, Franklin Arts Academy at the high school, and many more organizations will be offering unique ArtWeek programs."
Presented by Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek offers new ways to experience art, culture, and creativity. This year, Mass Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism have joined ArtWeek as Lead Champions in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the state’s creative economy.
“We are thrilled to have organizations like the Franklin Cultural Council partnering with ArtWeek this season,” said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., President & CEO of the Boch Center. “ArtWeek is an innovative festival that works to spotlight how the creative economy is thriving in Massachusetts. Each year ArtWeek showcases unique experiences spanning dance, fashion, media arts, spoken-word, poetry, writing, culinary, visual arts, music, opera, theater, design, film, and more. And the best part is that many of the events are free, making it affordable and accessible to everyone!”
The Franklin Cultural Council is offering ArtWeek grants of up to $250 each for programs that are offered free of charge to the public. Grant applications are open now, and close Jan. 9, 2018. If you are an interested artist, educator, performer or venue that would like help creating an ArtWeek event, or for information on ArtWeek grants, please email FCC Chair Stacey David at franklinculturalcouncil02038@gmail.com.
