THE BLACK BOX Classical Series Continues on Feb 9

Irina Fainkichen and pianist Irina Kotlyar return to THE BLACK BOX on February 9th at 4:00 p.m. as part of the THE BLACK BOX Classical Series. The concert program features music by titan composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Igor Stravinsky, and Maurice Ravel. Audiences will experience music through beautiful dances and emotions.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Irina Fainkichen is member of Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and has performed with New Hampshire Symphony, Lexington Symphony, Pro-Arte Chamber Orchestra, and recently with Broadway on Tour’s Phantom of the Opera at Boston Opera House.

Born in Ukraine, Irina Kotlyar received degrees from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, Israel. With Gregory Shifrin, the Kotlyar-Shifrin Piano Duo has won several international prizes and awards and has performed throughout Israel, Europe, and America.

LiveARTS Concert Series Continues With Concerts Celebrating Beethoven's 250th

Continuing its 17th classical music series season, LiveARTS presents three more classical music concerts, two at First Universalist Society, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin, Mass., and the final concert at Milford Town Hall. 

All Franklin 3:00 PM concerts feature special pre-concert talks at 2:30 p.m. by Wheaton Professor of Music Ann Sears and are located at The Meetinghouse, First Universalist Society, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin, Mass. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. for the pre-concert talk, with the concert to follow.

In this year-long celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday, each LiveARTS concert this season will feature his music. The next three concerts are:

· Sunday, February 16, 2020, 3 PM at First Universalist Society: Violin/Cello Virtuosi Ilana Zaks, 20, and her 18-year-old brother Eric Zaks of Needham with Dina Vainshtein, piano, performing music of Beethoven, Ginastera, among others.

· Sunday, April 19, 2020, 3 PM at First Universalist Society: Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Michael Lewin performing music of Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt and Schumann.

· Saturday, April 25, 2020, 7:30 PM, Milford Town Hall (52 Main Street): Special Collaborative Concert Between LiveARTS and the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra featuring Irina Muresanu, violin, and Donald Krishnaswami, viola, at this unique concert at Milford Town Hall. Ms. Muresanu and Mr. Krishnaswami will perform as soloists in Mozart's gorgeous and beloved Sinfonia Concertante in E-Flat Major, K. 364. Tickets are available on Claflin Hill's website at www.claflinhill.com.

According to LiveARTS artistic director Don Krishnaswami, "This season's lineup is going to be outstanding, starting with our first February concert. Twenty-year-old Ilana Zaks and her 18-year-old brother Eric Zaks have been wowing audiences with their young yet utterly mature virtuosity for a number of years, and LiveARTS is excited to be welcoming them onto our series."

Tickets for the first two concerts are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors ages 65+ and are available on the LiveARTS website at liveartsma.org. Tickets are by donation for students 18 and younger.

Founded in 2002, LiveARTS is a nonprofit, non-sectarian affiliate of the First Universalist Society in Franklin with a mission to enrich the cultural life of New England with classical music performances. THE BLACK BOX Comedy Series debuts on February 13 with adam connie sr. adam connie sr. is a Franklin, MA bred comedian based in San Diego, CA . His career in entertainment began when he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the web series "Fully Staffed." His love for comedy then took him to the stage. Now in his ninth year performing, he's ready to kick off his first tour in his hometown Franklin, MA.

THE BLACK BOX New England Artist Series presents The Love Dogs this Valentine's Day for a special night out. Take one red-hot horn section, add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar, pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called "the best in the business," and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front-man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals, and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic.It's a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence; it's The Love Dogs.

THE BLACK BOX presents Quartett Giocosa - Nov 17

Quartett Giocosa presents MACABRE on Sunday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m. as part of THE BLACK BOX Classical Series. This Halloween themed concert will feature Schubert’s famous quartet “Death and the Maiden,” in which the Spectre of Death stalks a young girl. Also on the program is Saint Saens’ “Danse Macabre” and a few other creepy treats. Tea service by Franklin’s Intermission Cafe will be available in the lobby.

Quartett Giocosa is a professional classical quartet featuring violinists Heather Goodchild and Irina Fainkichen with Irina Naryshkova on Viola and Elizabeth Schultze on Cello. Giocosa means "joy." Quartett Giocosa lives up to their name and reputation by bringing exuberance, passion, and vibrancy to the stage with every performance. The group has played with musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Mstislav Rostropovich, Anne Sophie Mutter, Mark O’Connor, Wynton Marsalis, Sarah Vaughan, Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jane Glover, Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, and Jung-Ho Pak.

LiveARTS: Victor Romanul Concert on October 6

Presents Victor Romanul, Violin Lisa Romanul, Piano in a benefit concert supporting LiveARTS concert series and music in the community Performing works by Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, and Foote Violinist Victor Romanul started performing at the age of 7. Victor, along with his three brothers traveled and performed extensively as the Romanul Quartet. After studying with Ivan Galamian, Joseph Silverstein, and Jascha Heifetz, Victor joined the Pittsburgh Symphony as a second violinist at the age of 21. During his first week there he won the position of Associate Concertmaster, remaining for six years. Eventually he joined the Boston Symphony. Victor has given numerous solo and concerto performances, and specializes in virtuoso music of the solo violin. The program will include music by Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Vitali. Tea service by Intermission Cafe will be available in the lobby.

THE BLACK BOX Classical Series: Quartett Giocosa with Irina Kotlyar - Nov 18

THE BLACK BOX Classical Series presents Quartett Giocosa in collaboration with pianist Irina Kotlyar on Sunday, November 18 at 4 pm. Violinists Heather Goodchild and Irina Fainkichen are joined by Irina Naryshkova on Viola, cellist Elizabeth Schultze, and Irina Kotlyar on Piano to perform the E flat Major Quintet, Op.44 by Robert Schumann and the Quintet in A Major, Op.81, by Antonin Dvorak. Cocktails and tea will be available. Quartett Giocosa was formed in 2017. The quartet players met years ago at the Cape Symphony, where they are all members.

Collectively, the members of QG have played with master musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Mstislav Rostropovich, Anne Sophie Mutter, Mark O’Connor, Wynton Marsalis and Sarah Vaughan. They have worked under the leadership of conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jane Glover, Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, and the incomparable Jung-Ho Pak and have played with orchestras including the Bergen Philharmonic, the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Atlanta and Oklahoma Symphonies, the Boston Lyric and Chicago Opera Companies and the Upsala Chamber Orchestra.

Irina Kotlyar, born in Kharkov, Ukraine, earned her degrees from Rubin Academy of Music. With Gregory Shifron, the Kotlyar-Shifrin Piano duo has won several International prizes and awards, including the Murrey Dranoff International Two Piano Competition (1999, Miami,) and an International competition in Poland (1999), and has performed throughout Israel, Europe and America.

LiveARTS: Concert on November 4 - Music of Leonard Bernstein

JOIN US FOR THE SECOND CONCERT OF OUR SEASON BERNSTEIN AT 100! Music of Leonard Bernstein Sunday, November 4, 2018 3:00 PM with Sandra Piques Eddy, mezzo-soprano David Kravitz, baritone Wayman Chin, piano Brian Moll, piano Metropolitan Opera's Sandra Piques Eddy and baritone David Kravitz team up to celebrate the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein in a LiveARTS concert on Sunday November 4th at the Meetinghouse of the First Universalist Society in Franklin, Massachusetts. The concert will include selections from the musicals  On the Town, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and Wonderful Town, as well as music for piano, performed by Wayman Chin and Brian Moll.  Few composers capture their time and become the iconic voice of their age like Leonard Bernstein. Writing for small ensembles, symphony orchestras, Broadway, film and opera houses, Bernstein projected a simple message of understanding and hope employing both complex and simple forms and styles – yet always sounding like "Bernstein", a voice best known in his score to West Side Story. Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy has performed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera more than 100 times. A Boston native, Ms. Eddy has sung with the Boston Lyric Opera, New York City Opera, and will perform the title role of Carmen on a Japanese tour with Maestro Seiji Ozawa in the coming year before singing with the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston and the New Zealand Opera. Hailed by the New York Times and Opera News, David Kravitz's recent opera engagements include the Washington National Opera, Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Italy and concert performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.  This concert takes place at 3:00 p.m. at the Meetinghouse of the First Universalist Society in Franklin, 262 Chestnut Street. Prior to the concert, Dr. Ann Sears, Professor of Music at Wheaton College, will present a pre-concert talk at 2:30. Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School: Tiered Focused Monitoring Review

Heather Zolnowski, Executive Director of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School was informed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of an upcoming Tiered Focused Monitoring (TFM) Review that will be taking place this school year. As part of this TFM Review, Department staff will visit the charter school during the week of November 12, 2018. 

Such visits are routinely conducted by the Department to satisfy federal and state requirements for the periodic review of specific education programs and services in schools throughout the Commonwealth. The Department is reviewing several programs during a single visit in order to use Department and school staff's time most efficiently and to encourage strong connections among the programs.

The Department's TFM Review will involve reviewing charter school procedures and individual student records, interviewing administrators and a Special Education Parent Advisory Council member, and surveying parents of students with IEPs. After the onsite visit, a report will be prepared for the Executive Director and Board of Directors, with detailed findings.

Using a scale of ratings ranging from "Commendable" to "Not Implemented," the report will rate the implementation of each requirement reviewed by the Department. Where requirements are found not implemented or only partially implemented, the district [or charter school] must propose to the Department corrective action to bring those areas into compliance with statutes and regulations. Districts and schools are encouraged to incorporate the corrective action into their district and school improvement plans and professional development plan. 

The school district [or charter school] will be provided with technical assistance from the Department in developing a corrective action plan. Both the Department's report and the corrective action plan are public information and will be available to the public upon request. TFM Review Final Reports are also available on the Department's Internet website at: http://www.doe.mass.edu/pqa/review/cpr/reports/.

Any member of the public may request to be interviewed by telephone by a member of the Department's visiting team. Those wishing to be interviewed should call the charter school leader's office at (508) 541-3434 no later than 11/9/2018 to leave their name and phone number, or they may call the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education at (781) 338-3704. 

A member of the visiting team will contact each person desiring an interview within two weeks after the completion of the onsite visit. If an individual is not comfortable communicating in English or requires some other accommodation, the Department will make arrangements to communicate appropriately with the individual.

We are honored to have four amazing musicians participating in an all-Mozart program in the first concert of our new season. Internationally acclaimed musicians James Buswell, violin, and Victor Rosenbaum, piano, will lead an ensemble that includes violinist Amy Galluzzo and cellist Carol Ou. All four musicians have strong ties, past and current, to the New England Conservatory of Music and are known for their strong interests in teaching music to students everywhere. All four of these artists have donated their performances free of charge to LiveARTS and its audience, because they all believe in bringing great music directly to where interested people live. Experiencing live classical music does not need to involve a long trip and expensive parking in Boston. It's available right here! The Benefit Concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, at the Meetinghouse of the First Universalist Church in Franklin, 262 Chestnut Street.  At 2:30, Ann Sears, Professor of Music at Wheaton College, will provide a pre-concert talk about the music to be performed in the concert. There will be a silent auction of a variety of items. Audience members can bid on gift certificates from several stores and shops in the area, a selection of fine wines, and piano tunings by our liveARTS piano technician. Doors open at 2:15. The building is completely accessible for all. Recently, Donald Krishnaswami, Artistic Director of LiveARTS, was interviewed on Franklin's local cable television station. Violinist James Buswell has performed as a solo violinist with major orchestras around the world. His regular professional activities include solo and chamber music recitals, conducting, teaching, lecturing and writing. In recital, he is known for regularly combining standard masterpieces with works of newer music, of which he is a champion.  Victor Rosenbaum, piano, delighted a LiveARTS audience in our past season with an all-Beethoven solo piano recital. He is back this year, bringing musical acquaintances with him. Mr. Rosenbaum was chair of the piano department at New England Conservatory for more than 10 years. He is currently Music Director of the Music for Peace concert series in Massachusetts. Violinist Amy Galluzzo has an active career both as a chamber musician and soloist. Ms. Galluzzo has performed at several prestigious summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Sarasota Music Festival. She maintains a private violin studio in Boston and has been involved with the Bennington Chamber Music Conference since 2015. Carol Ou, cellist, is a versatile artist, known for her ease with the diverse musical styles of the last five centuries. She is a recording artist, and has premiered several new compositions written especially for her. Since 2007, Ms. Ou has been Music Director of the Heifetz International Summer Music Institute in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and Staunton, Virginia.
