"November 28 is #GivingTuesday. Following the retail events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this national day of giving is a chance to give back to those in need. It is a chance to give hope to those who are struggling to have enough to eat. Having enough food gives hope to our clients that they will not be too hungry to focus on all the things that matter.
Like getting homework done after school. Having the energy to job hunt. Being able to afford heat. Making friends.
Every bag of groceries our clients bring home is full of hope. More than 1,000 people, including nearly 300 children, count on the Pantry during the year to help make ends meet.
We hope to raise enough funds to fill 1,000 bags of groceries. You can give the gift of hope now with our #GivingTuesday online donation form.
Thank you for helping our neighbors, your community. They are counting on us.

Need an excuse for that extra piece of pie? Run the Franklin Turkey Trot 5K

For the hundreds who will come out on Thanksgiving morning for the Franklin Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run, the motto is “Run now, gobble later!” When families gather together for their traditional feast after the event, there will be many more grateful for the bounty that results from the race. The registration fee of $20, or 20 nonperishable goods, goes directly to the Franklin Food Pantry, keeping donations local to help feed those in need.

The event begins and ends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) at 91 Jordan Road in Franklin. The race, open to runners and walkers of all ages, attracts experienced runners as well as families who want to get out and exercise together before their traditional holiday get-together. A professional race organizer officially records timing, pace and rankings for each runner.

“Thanksgiving is truly a time to be grateful for the many blessings we have,” said Erin Lynch, executive director for the Franklin Food Pantry. “But it is also an occasion to think of others who are struggling to put food on their tables. The Franklin Turkey Trot rallies our community to give back and help protect others from the threat of hunger. The more than 1,000 individuals we serve are grateful to our community for coming out to support us.”

The November 23 race will begin at 8 a.m. Registration can be done online at franklinturkeytrot.org; at the LDS Church from 7 – 9 p.m. the Wednesday before the race; or the morning of the race from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m. Official race t-shirts can be purchased online for $10 for those who register by November 2.

The registration fee of $20 is preferred as it allows the Pantry to “stretch our budget for leaner times,” said Lynch. “Our capacity to store the donated goods is extremely limited this time of year.” If participants prefer to donate goods, Lynch said the Pantry is in need of tea, coffee, hot cocoa and canned fruit. They can also go to the Pantry’s website at franklinfoodpantry.org for a longer list of current needs.

Lynch credits much of the event’s success to Race Director Krystal Whitmore. “We are fortunate to have an incredibly hard-working group of volunteers, led by Krystal, who make this event possible,” said Lynch. “Krystal organizes church members, high school students, and her own family members to volunteer. The amount of work involved is amazing. We could not do this without them.”

In the News: reasons to run Turkey Trot; Town Council sworn in

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"You’ve seen the signs around town advertising the local race and maybe you’ve dodged some of the runners on the road each year on Thanksgiving morning. Have you ever wondered what’s the big deal with Turkey Trots? Well, here’s five reasons to give them a shot.
1. You’ll have plenty of company - Nearly every community has a Turkey Trot. Some happen the weekend before Thanksgiving but most happen on Thanksgiving morning. It is the most popular day for road racing, according to a recent study by Runners World and the app RunKeeper. In fact, Thanksgiving passed July 4 as the most popular day for running a race in 2011 and never looked back. New Year’s Day is the third most popular day to run a race."

In the News: Turkey Trot draws a crowd, residents delivered goodies to Fire, Police

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin

The fourth annual Franklin Turkey Trot kicked off at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning when more than 600 runners and walkers set off on the traditional 5-kilometer race to benefit the Franklin Food Pantry.
The turnout, according to race organizer Krystal Whitmore, was greater than ever this year. In the past the race has fluctuated, having between 270 and 450 participants, Whitmore said, but this year, she purchased 600 bibs and ran out prior to the race.
“I’m a little taken aback,” she said.
Racers who could not get a bib were still able to participate in the race

In 2014, local resident Cheri Lynch thought she might lose her husband to a heart attack - and she likely would have, if not for the fast actions of Franklin emergency responders.
On Wednesday, she and others from across Franklin sought to recognize the town police and fire departments for the good they do by delivering dinners, baked goods and drinks to tide them over during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Lynch said her family's interaction with Franklin police and fire took place almost two years ago, on Feb. 5, 2014. Her husband, Luke, had removed snow that had fallen from their driveway and then went to work at EMC in town. Shortly before arriving, she said, Luke felt ill and asked his son and wife to take him to the hospital. Before they could collect him, though, he collapsed.

Now in its fourth year, the Turkey Trot Family 5K Fun Run aims to both entertain and help to better the community in this giving season.
Runners can pay to enter the race - which starts on Thanksgiving at 8 a.m. - in two ways: by either paying a $20 entry fee or donating 20 non-perishable food items.
Krystal Whitmore, the race's organizer, said all proceeds benefit the Franklin Food Pantry.
"My son started it four years ago as an Eagle Scout project," she said. "We got such a great response."

I will drive it in the morning to make a final decision on whether to cancel or not. I'll send an email out to you by 6:00 am. We'll also post the update on the http://www.feedtheneed.org/ website.
Unfortunately, there will not be a snow date.
Thanks for registering for the race! We hope to see you in the morning. Dress WARM.

Third Annual Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run and Walk to benefit the Franklin Food Pantry

The Third Annual Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run will take place on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 27th. The lollipop course will begin and end at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) at 91 Jordan Road in Franklin. Sponsored by the Feed the Need organization located in Hull, MA, the race is open to runners and walkers of all ages, featuring medals for best overall, first, second and third and for men, women and children by age category. A free raffle and continental breakfast will follow the race.

Feed the Need races started back in 2003 to support food pantries and shed light on hunger issues in local communities. The first such race took place here in Franklin in 2005, an idea of the LDS Church to help give back.“The race was renamed the Franklin Turkey Trot and began taking place on Thanksgiving morning three years ago when my son Hayden asked if he could plan the race as his Eagle Scout project – it has really hit its stride since,” remarked Krystal Whitmore, Director of the Franklin Turkey Trot.

“We are inspired by the fantastic turnout for the Franklin race. It is wonderful to see something so simple create this great sense of community bonding and giving back on the holiday of Thanksgiving.” Erin Lynch, Executive Director for the Franklin Food Pantry agrees, “When
people come out on this special holiday to get involved it shows a uniting and protecting of our community – our larger family – from the threat of hunger. We are grateful to Feed the Need for spearheading the race and raising awareness.”

Erin has been preparing to run this year’s race for several weeks with Franklin’s State Representative Jeffrey Roy. “Representative Roy and I decided to run the race in 2014 to bring more attention to the aspect of building sustainable solutions to end hunger. Jeff has been a huge supporter of our role in the Healthy Futures Franklin initiative, a collaboration launched by the Hockomock Area YMCA. We are all working together to improve the health of the community, and increasing access to nutritious food is a critical step.”

“Franklin is a town that prides itself in connecting with one another in the face of adversity,” said Representative Jeffrey Roy “On the issue of hunger, Franklin Food Pantry is at the heart of a collaborative network of organizations, individuals and volunteers who partner throughout the year to make food and healthy, life changing programs available to our neighbors. The Franklin Turkey Trot is one of those events where it all comes together and I would like to thank Erin Lynch for issuing me the challenge several months ago to join her in healthy living and training to run this year.”

Entry Fee for the Turkey Trot $20 or 20 cans of food (or box of personal toiletries). To participate in the Turkey Trot, please pre-register online at http://www.feedtheneed.org/. Register in person at LDS Church on Wednesday night, November 26th, 7-9pm or on race day, 6:45-7:45am. The first 100 participants to pick up their race bibs on Wednesday night will receive a T-shirt.

As part of the mission to provide immediate hunger relief and healthy sustainable solutions, the Franklin Food Pantry has increased the amount of fresh produce offered, resulting in a 43% increase in households returning on a regular basis for their fruits and vegetables. From June through October the pantry hosts a weekly Healthy Futures Market, where families receive produce as well as cooking demonstrations and healthy recipes courtesy of Cooking Matters. Also implemented this year was the new Healthy Futures™ shelf, which offers healthy alternatives such as Gluten-Free, Low Sodium, Low Sugar, and Whole Grain options for each family to choose from.
