FHS wrestling and girls hockey teams post wins on Thursday

Via HockomockSports and Twitter we share the results of the FHS sports action on Thursday, Feb 8, 2018.

Wrestling = Franklin, 33 @ North Attleboro, 18 – Final

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 4 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap

"Holding a 2-1 lead with under five minutes to go, the Canton boys hockey team was whistled for too many men on the ice.
It was just the second penalty of the game for the Dogs, but the visiting Panthers of Franklin High needed just 20 seconds in the second period on their first chance of the man advantage to cash in.
With the game on the line, Canton’s penalty showed it had learned its lesson from earlier on, coming up with a near perfect kill. The Bulldogs went on to score just over a minute after killing the penalty, and again with the net empty, to earn a 4-1 win in a clash of Davenport and Kelley-Rex division champions.
“That was a great kill,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “Bubba [McNeice] had a great game with the two goals but he was great on the kill. Jack Goyetch, Johnny [Hagan], Ryan [Nolte]…they all had a big kill. They learned their lesson from the first one around. They played very smart on that second kill, that was a huge part of the game.”

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap

"With two of the top defensive units in Canton and Franklin going head to head, goal scoring chances were going to be at a premium.
Franklin sophomore Jordan Dwyer took advantage of her chance, scoring the only goal of the game a minute into the final period to give the Panthers a 1-0 upset over Canton.
While Dwyer provided the lone tally of the game, it was Franklin freshman goalie Natalie Stott (35 saves) that put the Panthers in position to get the win.
“She made the difference,” said Franklin head coach Margie Burke of Stott. “Anytime its a one-goal game, you have to give it to the goalie. She gave us the opportunity to put one puck in the net. And it wasn’t until the third period. If [Canton] gets a couple goals early on, then we don’t even have that chance. She played great.”

FHS Wrestling takes Hockomock League Title for 2nd year

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the write up on the Hockomock League Wrestling Championships

"For the second straight season, Franklin took home the team title at the annual Hockomock League Wrestling Championships, held on Saturday at Canton High. The Panthers finished with 245 points to beat out second place North Attleboro, which finished with 217.5.
The Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament was given to Mansfield sophomore Vinnie Holmes, who needed less than a minute to win the title by pin at 182 pounds. Led by Holmes, fellow unbeaten wrestler Jayden Curley, who won by pin at 160, and George Glaropoulos, who won 16-1 at 152 pounds, Mansfield took third place with 168 points, just two better than Foxboro’s 166.
Canton took fifth place on the day with 125 points and earned two individual titles as well. Eddie Marinilli, who won at 126 last year, jumped up to 138 for his sophomore season and won by pin to earn his second title in as many years. At 132, Anis Chakir trailed 2-0 heading to the third round, but scored three points including a reversal in the final 30 seconds of the match to win the title over Franklin’s T.J. Remillard.
The Panthers had five wrestlers reach the finals and brought home two individual titles. Jake Carlucci won 11-2 to get things started at 106 and then Ian Bakalars got a third round escape to edge North Attleboro’s Dan Cooper 3-2 to win at 120."

Boys Hockey = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin, 6 – Final
– Foxboro trailed by just two goals after two periods but Franklin put the game away with three third period goals. CJ Spillane, TJ Durkin, Dan Magazu, Shane McCaffrey, Joe Lizotte and Scott Elliot each scored once for the Panthers while Josh Bertumen scored for Foxboro in the second period.

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 1 vs. Westwood, 3 – Final

Gymnastics = King Philip, 127.90 @ Franklin, 133.15 – Final
– Franklin junior Mia Lizotte won the All Around with a 35.75 while teammate Liz Traphagen took second with a 34.3 to help the Panthers beat King Philip. Franklin results: Vault – Lizotte 9.35, Traphagen 8.6, Lexi Lupien 8.3, Rachel Cyr 8.2; Bars – Lizotte 8.5, Sadie Rondeau 8.1, Traphagen 7.9, Katelyn Guidi 6.0; Beam – Lizzote/Traphagen 8.7, Rondeau 8.5, Lupien 7.9; Floor – Lizotte 9.2, Traphagen 9.1, Rondeau 8.3, Lupien 7.8.

Wrestling = Mansfield, 21 @ Franklin, 43 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the match recap:

"In the end, Franklin walked away with a comfortable 22-point win and at least a share of the its second straight Kelley-Rex division dual meet title, but this was anything but an easy Wednesday night on the mat for the perennial Hockomock League power.
Mansfield came into the gym with a ton of energy, looking to clinch its first league title and avenge last year’s big loss in the Albertini Gym. The Hornets battled from the start, but the experience of the still undefeated Panthers proved to be too much, as they sealed a 43-21 victory.
“Mansfield came in ready to wrestle us and we kind of weren’t,” said Franklin coach Carmine Colace. “Last year was a reversal, we went over to their place and we crushed them. We were ready to wrestle them…this year was the other way around. They came out and wrestled us hard. It was a lot closer than the score indicated.”
Jake Carlucci got the meet off to a great start for the Panthers with a pin at 106 pounds and a quick six points. Franklin would get pins in three of the first four matches, but it was not straightforward for the Panthers."

FHS girls hockey grabs win, wrestling comes out on top, boys hockey earns tie

Via HockomockSports and Twitter we share the results of the FHS sports action on Saturday, Jan 20, 2018

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 6 @ Dover-Sherborn/Hopkinton, 0 – Final

Wrestling = Burt Burger Invitational (Franklin)
– Franklin finished first at the annual Burt Burger Invitational, racking up 249 points. Jake Carlucci (106) and Jordan Carlucci (126) each won their respective brackets. Jordan Carlucci earned the “Most Pins, Least Time” award with three pins in 5:21. Brian Farrell and Bruce Johnson each had second-place finishes for the Panthers.

Boys Hockey = Mansfield, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

"Mansfield scored the first goal of the game with less than seven minutes to play in the game, but Franklin had an answer four minutes later to help the Panther steal a point in a 1-1 draw.
The Hornets had a 29-25 advantage in shots, outshooting the Panthers in both the first and third periods. Despite multiple chances throughout the first and second periods, goalies Dan Sheehan (Franklin) and Sean McCafferty (Mansfield) kept the puck out of the net.
But just over the midway point of the third period, Mansfield was finally able to break the stalemate. A turnover in the offensive zone allowed Mansfield to race out to a 3-on-2 chance. Coming down the right side of the ice, freshman Coleman Jenkins dropped a pass to the middle of the ice for junior Austin Ricker.
Ricker fired a wrist shot up high that Sheehan (28 saves) denied at first, but the puck had enough mustard to trickle over his shoulder, bounce off his back and fall into the net to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead."

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports provides a profile of FHS grad Ben Zogby who is wrestling for WPI:
"Entering his senior year, there were some doubts about whether or not former Franklin High standout Ben Zogby would be able to take the mat again for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) wrestling team. After an injury-plagued three years, Zogby had come close to quitting the sport that he started in elementary school.
But there he was in August, joining the rest of the Engineers for another grueling preseason. His effort to be part of the team again was rewarded not only by the coaches with a spot at 125 pounds, but also by his teammates with the honor of being named one of the team’s captains.
“It was humbling,” said Zogby during a break from the team’s midseason double sessions. “Being named captain kind of proved to me that hard work pays off…and it really kind of fueled me right into the season.”
