Dr. Paula Rooney: The Dean Difference

"Dean College has celebrated the lives of our students, faculty and staff from around the world for 155 years. The Dean Difference, implemented by all of us in our Community, demands equality and intolerance for racial injustice as we recognize the gifts that all members of our Community share with each other. We are anguished by the longstanding pain endured as a result of racial injustice and are committed to coming together as a community to listen, learn, grow and contribute toward progress in building a stronger, compassionate and more equitable democracy for all.

We mourn the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd and stand in unity recognizing the gift he was to his family and to his community. Through personal responsibility we all must take a stand against violence, racism and the injustice that prevails in its shadow. As faculty and staff, we will take concrete actions designed to deepen our collective understanding and empower our students as citizens.

Embracing social responsibility, including racial justice, is an essential value at the heart of the Dean College Mission Statement. Global and Intercultural Fluency, the “awareness and respect for commonalities across and differences between identities, cultures, experiences and/or global origins,” is one of our six Learning Goals. Collectively, these shape our holistic approach to education which prepares our students to have respect for all in the classroom, through co-curricular activities and in leadership and internship experiences and they inform our daily work. This summer, members of our faculty and staff will be engaged in professional development designed to infuse this Learning Goal, and others, with curricula and co-curricular practices to advance equity, both inside the classroom and in all of our campus life experiences.

The Dean Difference ensures that each of our students can advance the cause of social justice in their lives and the lives of those that they encounter. Our future as a democracy requires that we stand in solidarity against racism and injustice. We must challenge each other to move to a place where justice prevails for all.

Dean College reaffirms its values today and every day in our actions as we live our institutional Mission.

Please join me in your own prayerfulness and actions to bring peace and comfort to those who need our support, our compassion and our willingness to listen and to hear their message."

With respect,

Dr. Paula M. Rooney, Dean College President

In the News: "Mass. lawmakers push back on Trump’s military threat"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"President Donald Trump on Monday said he wouldn’t hesitate to deploy the military into American cities to forcefully quell violence, looting and vandalism if governors can’t control the protests against police brutality occurring around the country. But the threat was met with resistance in Massachusetts, where the state’s top law enforcement official described it as illegal and a “stupid thing to do.”

Attorney General Maura Healey on Tuesday said that Trump “doesn’t have the authority to say what he’s going to do.” And based on conversations with Massachusetts police, she’s also worried that greater militarization will lead to more tension.

“We need to push for deescalation and a calming and restore a semblance of order,” Healey said in a virtual appearance before the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. “We don’t need soldiers in our streets.”

Healey’s comments came the morning after U.S. Sen. Edward Markey described Trump’s Rose Garden remarks as “un-American,” and U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy said a military response to the anger being displayed on the streets would not work."

Franklin Public Schools - Joint Statement - June 2, 2020

June 2, 2020

Dear Franklin Community,

It is with great grief and despair that we observe the recent troubling acts of racism, hate, and violence across the country and the emotional impact is having on our community. The deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, among a growing list of people of color, remind us of the very real and present danger that persists for targets of both passive and active racism. We also recognize that COVID-19 has had a disproportionate effect on people of color as a result of systemic, institutionalized racism. As leaders of the Franklin Public Schools, we denounce racism and embrace anti-racist actions.

We extend our support to all of the Black/African American families in our community and across the nation, and we remain committed to honoring and protecting the rights and dignity of all members of our community.

Franklin Public Schools remains resolute in its enduring commitment to inclusive and equitable schools. Despite our greatest efforts, we are not immune to incidents of hate and bias. The painful incidents we have also experienced in our community are an affront to our core values. We will not tolerate, accept or condone acts or speech that are hateful, racist, anti-semitic, xenophobic, homophobic, or gender-biased. We are, as a community, simply better than that.

Our overarching goal is to ensure that each child and family is welcomed and safe in our schools -- whether we are physically together or distanced. To that end, we will continue to take action. Our Core Values include fostering a Safe and Inclusive School Culture for all individuals and cultures. This belief serves as a pillar of strong school climates and the foundation upon which we build a comprehensive educational experience for each student. As we move forward, we will continue to engage students in learning experiences that reinforce and promote education about the need for racial justice and cultural proficiency. Inclusivity and cultural sensitivity will continue to be focus areas for our district. Specifically, we will continue to examine our actions, policies, curriculum, instruction, activities, and other systems to ensure they are without implicit bias and promote equity and respect for all.

We invite all stakeholders to join us in our effort to eradicate hate from our school community and encourage you to talk with your children. Some helpful resources are as follows:
