Hockomock League Statement on Fall Season

"With the official announcement coming yesterday from the MIAA Board of Directors, the Fall Sports High School Interscholastic season start date has now been postponed until September 14. The Hockomock League supports the MIAA decision and is working diligently to prepare itself for the safe launch to the Fall season.

Consequently, all Fall Sports game schedules currently posted will undergo revision to fit the guidelines to be proscribed by the Governor, DESE, and the MIAA. We look forward to serving you in the 2020-21 school year.

Hockomock League Statement on Fall Season

No Pep Band Camp @ FHS in August

The FHS Music Department has decided not to hold its traditional Pep Band Camp this August due to the uncertain start of the school year. More information regarding Pep Band will be given in September.

"All nine Democratic candidates competing for Rep. Joe Kennedy III’s U.S. House seat will face off Wednesday night in a livestreamed debate hosted by six local Democratic town committees. 

“All of the candidates are from ... wealthier parts of the district. The issues that are at the forefront there are not the same issues we have out here,” Milford Democratic Town Committee Chair Bryan Cole said. “So we want to make sure that our concerns, that Milford’s concerns, are at the forefront of their minds.” 

Kennedy is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Edward Markey. 

Six of the Democratic candidates are from Brookline, two are from Newton, and one is from Wellesley. They are Brookline’s David Cavell, Alan Khazei, Ihssane Leckey, Natalia Linos, Jesse Mermell, and Benjamin Sigel; Newton’s Jack Auchincloss and Becky Grossman; and Wellesley’s Christopher Zannetos. 

Two Republicans are vying for a spot opposite the winning Democrat on the ballot – David Rosa of Dighton and Julie Hall of Attleboro."

“We’re not prepared for a resurgence"

"There were nearly 500 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Massachusetts over the weekend and the percentage of tests that come back positive for the coronavirus is rising. 

The Department of Public Health confirmed 210 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and 273 more cases on Sunday, along with the announcement of 31 recent COVID-19 deaths between the two days. The number of daily new cases, which had generally settled at fewer than 200 a day earlier in the month, has been above 200 each of the last four days. 

“Last four days in #Massachusetts had #COVID19 new positive tests over 200. Last time that happened? Mid-June - on the way down,” Dr. David Rosman, president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, tweeted Sunday night. “The data is early, but it looks like we are on the way back up. We should consider backing down a phase. #wearamask.” 

Sunday’s report from DPH also showed that the seven-day average of the positive test rate as of July 25 had climbed to 1.9% from 1.8% after holding steady at 1.7% for more than a week. One month ago, the positive test rate was 2.0%."

For L’Merchie Frazier, the towering bronze relief in downtown Boston captures the stirring call to arms answered by Black soldiers who served in the state’s famed Civil War fighting unit, which was popularized in the 1989 Oscar-winning movie “Glory.” 

But the longtime Boston artist says she understands how the imagery of the Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial (https://www.nps.gov/boaf/learn/historyculture/shaw.htm) can conjure mixed feelings as the nation takes another hard look at its monuments and memorials in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. 

“Whose story is being told with this monument?” said Frazier, who is the education director at the nearby Museum of African American History. “The hierarchy is very evident. White commander out front; Black soldiers in the background. It’s the first thing you see.”

"TWO MEMBERS of the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus will be part of the group that will hammer out differences between the House and Senate versions of police reform legislation. 

Springfield Democrat Rep. Carlos Gonzalez, who chairs the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, will be joined by Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz of Jamaica Plain, who is the sole member of the caucus in the Senate. The other four participants are Sen. William Brownsberger of Belmont and Republican Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr of Gloucester, along with Reps. Claire Cronin of Easton, who co-chairs the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Timothy Whelan, a Brewster Republican who voted against the bill. The Senate bill passed 30-7, and the House bill was approved by a margin of 93-66."
