Teens: are you passionate about fighting climate change?

Several faith communities are joining together to form an Interfaith / Inter-town (Franklin & No Attleboro) group of youth to learn, teach, lead and act to save our planet.

You don’t have to be a member of any faith community to be involved, and you can live in any town.

The first meeting will be on Sunday, December 4th at 7 PM at St John’s to gauge interest and plan our actions.

Pizza provided. Please spread the word and bring your friends.

Reminder: St John’s Episcopal Affordable Housing Development, Community Meeting Scheduled for Oct 23 - 6:30 PM

Several years ago, St John's was approached by a for-profit developer that wanted to purchase most of our 20 acres of woods to build single-family homes. Our mission is about serving the community, not making a profit, so we refused this proposal. And, we started to discern what is the best use of this vital asset that we have.

We started to weigh our prime objectives: 1) To provide something that’s needed by the community, 2) To honor Creation by preserving most of the land for natural habitat, and 3) To provide needed revenue for the survival of the parish.

I attended a Franklin Town Council meeting where I learned that the Franklin Housing Authority manages about 200 units of housing for families, individuals, seniors and disabled people. There are 1300 individuals and 2500 families on the waiting list, but only about 20 units turn over each year. So affordable housing is desperately needed in Franklin and elsewhere.

That's when St John's started exploring what it would take to offer such a gift to the community. We were introduced to  The Community Builders, a non-profit affordable housing developer, and decided to partner with them. They built and still manage Eaton Place on Veterans Memorial Drive, Franklin. We want to provide housing for people who can't afford to live in the town where they grew up.

So this project will be for people who make less than 60% of area median income (AMI) (some units will be for 50% and even 30% of AMI, so VERY low income). It will use less than a quarter of our 20 acres, and the rest will remain wild. We plan to create walking paths to connect with DelCarte, and even some public parking, so that the community can enjoy the land.

You are invited to an informational meeting on Sunday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM at St John's. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

Peace,

Rev Kathy

St John’s Episcopal Church Celebrates 125 years of ministry in Franklin

Join us on Sunday, September 11 at 10 AM for a historical Worship Service (in the style of 1897). You’re even invited to wear period costumes! This will be followed by a festive picnic, viewing of historical artifacts, learning about our connections to the native peoples of the area and the Armenian community in Franklin, creation of a timeline, a scavenger hunt for the kids, and mystery photos to identify. If you’ve ever had a connection to St John’s, or if you think you might like to, please join us for this celebration.

Our community began during the ‘Third Awakening’ of Christianity which followed the civil war. A series of revival meetings held in Franklin by traveling missionaries from the U.S. Army Church during the summer of 1897 inspired a community of local Episcopalians to establish the “St. John's Mission.”  The community held their services in the Baptist Meeting House until 1910 when they succeeded in raising funds to build their own church on School Street.

The church grew steadily in the early twentieth-century and, by the 1950s, outgrew the School Street sanctuary, which was sold to Dean College.  The mission community formally joined the Episcopal Diocese as a parish in 1961, at which point the diocese recommended that they purchase a larger site out of the town center.

In 1966, the construction of the present church and parish hall down in the leafy dell at 237 Pleasant St. was completed and celebrated.  Throughout our history, St. John’s has been active in the civic life of the town, particularly in the institution and support of a robust Franklin Food Bank and the success of the interfaith Council.

The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and a branch of the Jesus Movement. We walk the middle way between Catholic and Protestant, seeking God’s presence in Word and Sacrament, as well as in all of Humanity and Creation.

Our governance is democratic; our priesthood is not restricted to one gender; and many of our priests are married. At St John’s, we welcome all kinds of families: Gay, Straight, Transgender, Single Parents, Divorced, Widowed, Recovering, Seeking, Young, Old, and unsure.

Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of MA, to visit St John’s on the Feast of Pentecost

The Right Reverend Gayle E Harris, Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, to visit St John’s on the Feast of Pentecost.

Right Reverend Gayle E Harris
Right Reverend Gayle E Harris
On Sunday, June 5th at 10 AM, St John’s is pleased to welcome Bishop Gayle Harris as Presider and Preacher for its Family Service on the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, is the day that Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, and it’s often thought of as the birthday of the Church.

Bishop Harris will celebrate the Eucharist and distribute Communion, and will offer a children’s sermon. After the service, she will have an informal conversation with the congregation during a potluck lunch.

All are welcome to attend.
