Franklin Art Association May 3, 2023 Demo Artist: Nan Rumpf

The Franklin Art Association (FAA) is pleased to announce that Watermedia artist Nan Rumpf will be presenting at the upcoming 6:30 PM, May 3 monthly meeting at the Franklin Senior Center.

Nan Rumpf’s paintings have been exhibited at Museums in Framingham, Concord, Attleboro, and Duxbury. She recently had a painting accepted into the American Watercolor Society’s International show in New York City and the New England Watercolor Society’s National Show in Gloucester. She has been a visiting artist at Framingham State and Medfield High School.  She was one of twenty artists chosen across the country to have a painting included in the Watercolor Artist magazine’s Best of 2021 in watercolor. She currently teaches classes in Wellesley, Needham, and Bedford and New Art in Newton. She is a board member of the WSA, and a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society.

Artist Statement
"The process of painting is what most fascinates me. I like to see how watercolors and other water media react to different painting surfaces and interact with each other. Does the surface affect the edges of a puddle … the flow of the paint … the granulation? Does acrylic paint provide a natural resist for watercolor? Experimenting with different methods to obtain accidental texture appeals to me. What happens when you pour liquid watercolor through objects placed on top of the paper?

These experiments give me something to respond to and motivate me to continue experimenting with different painting techniques and compositions as I develop each painting. After the first experimental layer, I walk around the painted surface and look at it from different sides until I see something that I want to emphasize or see a shape that I want to develop. Sometimes a theme begins to present itself and I go with it. Making one change often strongly suggests the next. I am attempting to capture the essence of form, shape, color and value from my observations, memories, and imaginings and to explore new artistic territories."        nanrumpf@gmail.com     www.nanrumpf.com

Franklin Art Association meeting features Robin Wessman - March 1

Treat Yourself this Wednesday, March 1!

Robin Wessman will be the demo artist at the March 1, 2023 meeting of the Franklin Art Association, where he will work on a landscape painting.

Robin Wessman is a contemporary realist artist who paints a variety of subjects including still life, landscapes and portraits.

Painting from life is essential for him to observe and understand how light impacts form, color and the character of his subjects. His paintings are a reaction to the environment he lives in and how he feels about the world around him. They are fueled by imagination, experience and a continuous drive to create paintings that have the potential to go beyond the obvious and inspire viewers to see more than an accurate depiction of the subjects.

His technical craftsmanship along with emotion and implied narratives is what makes his paintings unique. Every painting seeks to seize the viewer’s immediate attention and hold them long enough to think or feel some connection that gives them pleasure.

Our meetings are held at the Franklin Senior Center and begin at 6:30 PM.

Everyone is welcome!

Franklin Art Association scheduled to hear from Dennis Sardella - Wednesday, Feb 1, 2023

At the monthly meeting of the Franklin Art Association on Wednesday, February 1, Dennis Sardella, author of the book Visible Image of the Invisible God - An introduction to Russian and Byzantine Icons, published by Paraclete Press, will present an illustrated lecture entitled “Russian Icons: Art As Revelation.”  Byzantine and Russian icons are the art of the Christian East, a living tradition that spans nearly two millennia, from the Roman Empire to the twenty-first century.
Dennis Sardella, author of the book Visible Image of the Invisible God - An introduction to Russian and Byzantine Icons
Dennis Sardella, author of the book Visible Image of the Invisible God - An introduction to Russian and Byzantine Icons

The talk will explore their history, their symbolic language, and their role in the liturgical and spiritual life of the Eastern Church.  It will also give an overview of the major types of icons, including those of Christ, the Mother of God, saints, and feasts, and the steps that go into their creation.

Sardella has been a docent at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA, since 2010, where he leads gallery tours and introduces visitors to the world of Byzantine and Russian icons. He also writes, and speaks regularly to civic and church groups on the topics of religious icons and the role they play in Eastern Christian spirituality.

From 1967 until 2012 he was a professor of chemistry at Boston College.  In 1990 he became the founding director of the Boston College Presidential Scholars Program, a university-wide co-curricular honors program, and directed it until 2010.  As part of the Program, for 17 years he and his wife Marjorie, a fine art photographer, led groups of Boston College Presidential Scholars on month-long study trips to France, which stimulated his interest in the subject of religious icons.  Since their retirement they have continued to travel and photograph extensively throughout Western Europe.

This meeting will be held at the Franklin Senior Center at 6:30 PM on February 1, 2023.

The public is invited.  The Franklin Art Association is supported in part by the Franklin Cultural District and the Franklin Cultural Council.  www.franklinart.org and on Facebook and Instagram.

Franklin Art Association: Newsletter for January 2023

Dear members and friends,

I’m looking toward 2023 with hope for new ideas, fresh starts, and renewed optimism. The phrase “tabula rasa” comes to mind, one of whose definitions is “An opportunity to begin again with no record, history, or preconceived ideas.”

But what does that mean for an artist, who relies on many of the same strategies over and over again in order to have a successful outcome. I think it means shaking things up! For example, try a new medium... paint on a different surface...paint a landscape if you always paint still lifes...try abstract vs: realism...take a workshop or class...visit the MFA... check out the local galleries...come to an FAA paint-in...enter a painting in the FAA gallery! Maybe you are already doing some of these things, and that’s great. My hope is to break some long held patterns and create pathways for new ideas to emerge. Even if I’m not that successful, it will be fun trying!

Happy New Year to all of you. May 2023 bring you new ways of seeing and interpreting the world
around you!

Warm regards,

Sue Sheridan
President

"Finding the Light" in Franklin from Nov 27 to Dec 18

"Greetings art lovers!
Beginning on holiday weekend, Nov 27- December 18, I will leave a piece of art at an undisclosed location for the Franklin community members to find.
This collection is called "Finding the Light" and it is part 2 of last year’s kick off.
I created this series during my Artist in Residence role for Natick 2021. I had just lost my father. This prompted me to imagine how many others are coping through pain and loss around the holiday season, sparking the need to share "light".
In that same spirit, I mean for it to be uplifting, bring hope, joy and giving around the holidays.
Come to this page for clues and an image to help you find it easily. The clues may be released early each week, but the art will be placed on Sunday mornings. "
