Schedule to donate blood at the Elks this Thursday, Sep 8

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

The American Red Cross will support 9/11 Day by offering the community an opportunity to honor those who lost their lives and those who responded following the events of Sept. 11. Interested individuals can volunteer or donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross and help ensure blood is available for patients in need.
9/11 Day was launched in 2002 as an annual day of service to honor the victims and heroes of Sept. 11. Since then, the observance has evolved into the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the U.S. and was designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance by the U.S. Congress in 2009.
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood; regular donations are needed. Blood and platelet donors of all types are urged to give.
The following local blood donation opportunities will take place:
  • 2-7 p.m. Sept. 8, Franklin Elks, 1077 Pond St., Franklin.
  • 1-6 p.m. Sept. 16, Answer is Fitness, 7 Lincoln Road, Foxborough.

"We're really looking good as far as donations go, but we could always use more"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Several local groups have come together to run a drive to provide school supplies for needy area families.
The Hockomock Area YMCA has partnered with the Franklin Elks and the Franklin School District to run the effort, aimed at assembling backpacks full of the supplies.
Michelle Branche of the YMCA is coordinating the drive, which she said is in its second year.
"Last year, we assembled 64 backpacks, but we had not partnered with the other groups," she said. "We have a scholarship program at the Y, and we reached out through that."

"Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti spoke before the Town Council this week about strategies to prevent recidivism among area offenders.
Bellotti, speaking at the council's Wednesday night meeting, said it is important to connect offenders with services before their sentences are up.
"We hear time and time again - up to 90 percent of (offenders) have alcohol or drug issues," he said, adding that other problems - like a lack of housing or vocational skills - contribute to offending or re-offending. "What we try to do is assess where their deficits are."

In the News: Elks 5K, downtown parking

Franklin's first Elks 5K a success

The inaugural Elks Care Elks Share 5K Run and Walk held on May 11 was a smashing success, organizers say, raising more than $15,000 that will go to the Franklin Food Pantry, the Wounded Warriors Project and the One Fund Boston.

Sub-committee aims to fix downtown Franklin parking problems

Ever since the town brought back a parking control officer to patrol downtown, business owners there have debated, as tickets piled up, whether the renewed enforcement has helped or hurt.

"I don’t think we’ve ever done anything this big"

The Elks Lodge will hold the inaugural Elks Care Elks Share 5K Run and Walk on May 11 to benefit the Franklin Food Pantry and the Wounded Warriors Project.
The race kicks off at 10 a.m. at Lodge 2136, 1077 Pond St. The course, which begins and ends at the Elks Lodge, follows Pond Street, Southgate Road, Maple Street and Partridge Street.
The top three female and male finishers in each age group receive trophies and other awards. Already 125 people have registered with more expected to sign up in the week ahead.
Apart from the two main beneficiaries, a raffle has been planned to raise money for One Fund Boston — prizes include a baseball signed by Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. Also, the sky-blue and yellow "Boston Strong" ribbon has been emblazoned on T-shirts created for the event.

via The Milford Daily News News RSS by Matt Tota/Daily News staff on 9/21/12

The Elks Lodge has had a busy year. So far it has raised $50,000 for a Bellingham native who lost both legs and part of an arm fighting overseas, given 100 gallons of oil to heat veterans' homes and collected items to ship out to troops serving in Afghanistan.
