Additional Enrollment Lottery at BFCCPS for Grades Seven and Eight

Hi Steve,

A limited number of spaces are available for students to join the seventh and eighth grade classes at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School beginning in September 2015. 

Applications can be completed online and are also available in the front office. All applications must be received by no later than September 3, 2015 at 8 AM.

In the News: FHS enrollment, artist-in-residence

As posted here on Sunday, the new Franklin High School will open with more students than it closed with it June. The Milford Daily News writes:

While the high school enrollment continues to climb — three more ninth grade students joined on Monday — district-wide enrollment has decreased over the last few months: from 5,776 in June to 5,628 as of July 30. 

School officials expected that with a new school opening, more students would enroll in the high school program. At the elementary school level, however, enrollment has declined. 

Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said the numbers aren’t surprising. 

"During the spring, we sent out several surveys to parents of grade eight students to see what options they were considering for HS," Sabolinski wrote in an email. "In the past we had a consistent number of students opt to attend private/parochial school and about 90 percent of the grade 8 students indicated they intended to enroll at FHS."

Dean gets an extra special guest teacher in dance as artist-in-residence

Dance majors at Dean College this year will have the opportunity to learn from a master of the craft, a man who created his own technique and who has been called one of the top four tap dancers in the world. 

William Evans, known internationally as a successful author and choreographer, joins the college beginning this semester as an artist-in-residence who will teach and advise students of Dean’s Palladino School of Dance. 

Evans, 73, founded his own dance company in 1975 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has choreographed more than 200 works. The company has performed in all 50 states.

The Kindergarten enrollment as of 4/2/12. This is a line item for discussion at the School Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Apr 10, 2012.

Looking at the current K classroom staffing and the enrollment to date, it looks like there should be some re-alignment of K teachers to better balance the class size across the district. Parmenter for example has 4 K classes this year and may only need 2 next Sep. Current K classes and class size can be found in the following Enrollment document.

In the School Committee packet for the Tues Jan 11 meeting is the following report on enrollment projections for the Franklin Public Schools.

According to this report, we have seen the peak enrollment, the numbers will be declining from here for the foreseeable future.

Franklin Public Schools: Enrollment Comparison 2009 to 2010

The school enrollment figures at the end of October are the important ones from a DESE reporting perspective. The document below shows the enrollment by grade by school across the district comparing this school year to last.

Overall there are 6,044 a decline of 56 students from the 6,100 for the same time last year.
While the district dropped 56 students, the high school increased from 1.625 to 1,648. The total amongst the three middle schools dropped from 1,479 to 1,431. The total amongst the elementary schools dropped from 2,996 to 2,965.

A. Space Needs Sub Committee Report and Modular Rubric

Roberta Trahan - subcommittee chair
Space at the high school but most other space has been utilized
Looking for direction from the committee overall on what to do next, i.e. re-districting

Rohrbach - Davis Thayer space, Town has not yet financed to remove the modular units (although approved by School Committee).

Trahan - with the modulars out, there would be some space depending upon the enrollment at the time

Horace Mann is using space that would otherwise be Oak Streets not the other way around.

Sherlock - Clarification on the use of the rubric, a four point scale but some of the pages had two numbers, hence you couldn't make a decision?
Trahan - yes, some of the modular units fell between the status categories

Sherlock - I was also anticipating that the room capacities would be included so one could assess the true space needs and capacity requirements of what we have and what we need.

Discussion on minor re-districting possible to address crowding at JF Kennedy, Keller and shift to elsewhere.

Sabolinski - We started the re-districting process with space needs, an enrollment projection.
Roy - the last one we did was 2001, so it has lasted for quite some time
Cafasso - we need to look at where these is growth, as you go around town, there is new building coming. Look at the housing turnover, particularly with the elderly leaving at some point to "cash in" on their housing values.
