**LIBRARY NEWS**

Library Hours
The Library's hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This Holiday season the Library will be open Saturday December 23^rd and 30^th from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The Library will be closed December 24^th, 25^th, 31^st, and January 1^st.

Franklin Reads!
This winter's community-wide read is Tracy Kidder's Rough Sleepers, a real-life portrait of Boston's homeless population and those on a mission to help them.

About the book:  After Jim O'Connell graduated from Harvard Medical School and was nearing the end of his residency at Massachusetts General, the hospital's chief of medicine made a proposal: Would he defer a prestigious fellowship and spend a year helping to create an organization to bring health care to homeless citizens? That year turned into O'Connell's life's calling. Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O'Connell and his colleagues as they work with thousands of homeless patients, some of whom we meet in this illuminating book. We travel with O'Connell as he navigates the city streets at night, offering medical care, socks, soup, empathy, humor, and friendship to some of the city's most endangered citizens.
Where can I get a copy of Rough Sleepers? Beginning December 1st there will be many extra print copies available at the library and it is also available on Libby and through interlibrary loan.

In our second year of providing free tax preparation assistance through the VITA IRS program the Franklin Public Library is looking for volunteers! Franklin Library ESL & Adult Literacy Program
Volunteer tutors needed! To volunteer please be at least 18 years old, have a High School diploma, & speak English clearly.  No prior teaching experience needed!  Volunteer tutors and students do not need to be Franklin residents. If interested, please fill out the registration form on the library's website.

DPW shares a crack sealing video - one step in a road maintenance process

"Yeah black squiggly lines!

This is called “crack sealing!” It is the most cost-effective way to extend the life of a roadway if done at the right time.

Everybody knows about potholes, and how they form; you get a crack in the road water gets in there, freezes, and next thing you know, the asphalt breaks apart. This simple procedure sprays a liquid emulsion asphalt into the crack so pothole does not form in the winter months.

Get Ready to Ride in the Franklin PMC Kids Ride - June 4th (Or donate to this worthy cause!)

The 16th annual Franklin PMC Kids Ride will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 8 AM to 12 PM. The Franklin ride is one of more than 20 PMC Kids Rides throughout the New England area. The Franklin ride usually attracts 200 young cyclists between the ages of 3 and 14, who ride between 3 and 10 miles. The ride raises money for cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Altogether, the PMC Kids Rides program has raised more than $9 million since their first ride in 1998. This year's goal is $50,000.

This ride is a unique event that motivates kids to learn about the importance of giving back, introduces them volunteerism and fundraising, and offers a way for children to become part of the PMC mission in a safe and athletic way. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These donations benefit research, treatment, and care for children and families impacted by cancer.

The Franklin PMC Kids Ride will will start and end at the Jefferson School, located at 628 Washington Street in Franklin. Kids can select from a 3, 6, or 10-mile course. They will also enjoy an after-ride celebration with music, games, food, and more. Younger participants, not yet on two wheels, can partake in the Tikes and Trikes course in a contained area at the school. This area has several fun stations and activities for the little ones, including a car wash, gas station, snack stand, craft table, face painting, and more. There is a $20 registration fee which includes a tee shirt and goodie bag. There is also a $40 fundraising minimum for all riders.

Riders and volunteers can register, and donations can be made online at www.kids.pmc.org/franklin. 

All local communities are encouraged to participate. For more information about the ride or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Lisa Marchioni at lisabxyz@verizon.net

Please join me for a virtual presentation, Mental Health Essentials for Parents and Caregivers, delivered by experts from the Mental Health Collaborative (MHC), a Hopkinton-based nonprofit organization that serves educators, school districts, and families across the country with education on mental health literacy. This free webinar aims to provide those with children, particularly in grades six through 12, the tools they need to understand their children's stress, identify emotional and behavioral health issues and their treatments, and empower them to obtain and maintain good mental health for their loved ones. This development could not come at a more critical time.
